Notice how he keeps his elbow really low and makes the motion almost parallel to the table surface. Great thumbnail and very informative.

Something I learned over the years: When you´re in a pushing duel you need to be patient and have nerves of steel. I met so many oponents who lost their temper and attacked - to my fortune. Now I can push for ever and a day ;-)

I have strategy to make backspin by brushing the ball behind and not only under it. For pushing I have short pull with middle finger. Almost like pull the trigger on sniper rifle. So the ball lands incredible short on oponent side from almost any distance, Very little forward momentum and lots of spin.

Perhaps a dumb question but catching the ball on the rise vs. taking the ball on the fall is better because you can create more spin due to more speed or is it easier to get the ball to clear the net?

Because it is easier to create spin and easier to still return it short quickly

My opinion: If you want a spinny push, you have to transfer most of your racket's momentum for spin. When you do this, you can't transfer enough momentum to get over the net. That's why you need to contact the ball at the time that the ball has the kinetic energy most. Is it helpful?

Taking the ball earlier makes it easier for you to control the ball to be short on the other side of the net. The longer you leave the ball the further away from the net it is so you need to be more precise to keep the ball short.

Once you run into your first opponent with a good backspin serve you'll find "stabbing" at the ball is the only way to get it over the net!
