Perfect Downwind Sailing to the DR - Sailing Uma [Step 64]

We waited and waited in Haiti for the perfect wind to sail East to the Dominican Republic. It was a perfect sail. Calm enough to enjoy a nice spa day onboard. After 3 days at sea, we we're excited to see land once more and await all the new adventures that awaited us on shore.

    I watch a lot of sailing videos here from a lot of different vessels. One of the things I really enjoy about Uma is how Dan and Kika relate to their environment at sea. It's only a video but a lot can be communicated if one is really watching and listening. These 2 are truly comfortable at sea for the most part. They can enjoy the voyage. Too many of these sailors sound and seem like they are hitting the panic button and hour out of port. Sometimes I think their electric drive time and distance limitations are truly a blessing since they have learned to travel on Natures time. That continuity goes a long ways towards the what is "missing" in our lives that we are all searching for. Becoming comfortable in ones environment and even more so becoming comfortable in ones own skin. Top 3 sailboat crews on youtube right now IMHO are: Delos, La Vagabonde, and last but not least Uma. Uma may not have the numbers YET but hopefully that will come for them.

    tazmun Delos,...really? It's scripted /soft porn and taky. La Vagabond is cool, but beginning to look a bit on the unrealistic/expensive side, still cool though. Uma i definitely agree with you on that. I'd say Sailing Uma, project Atticus, SailLife, Sailing Nanji and i respect what Whitespot pirate is doing. (there's an Brasilian couple doing something cool too, but I forgot their name sry). But the likes of Delos i have 0 respect for, don't watch them at all.

    I enjoy the female form just fine...I'm certainly not going to deduct points for that...lol. But watching Brian and Brady take amateur crews in the big...and I do mean big waves in the Indian ocean...through their confidence and steady hands...all is still well...fantastic leadership skills results in a crew that will follow you to hell and back. There are a lot of great sailors out there and on youtube...it's just my opinion...and really I'm only giving points for is do they have it together when the chips are down and still do it with style...are they truly in their element. There are a lot of ways this contest if we were really having one could be judged...probably better ways....but this is how I chose to do it.....and really I just wanted to give Uma props...not start any big hoorahs..just figure out which ones might do lunch with Poseidon sometimes ya know.

    Nice sailing trip! Recommend lee cloths for the settee in the main cabin. With a couple extra pillows you can brace yourself into the slot and get some rest! It can be made from a piece of canvas with some grommets, adding a couple mesh panels lets more air flow through. The V-berth is usually the least comfortable place to sleep on passage, exaggerated motion, and more wave noise. Might want to spend some time and track down the rattling stuff...the inside should be quieter than outside. ;) Some canned food rolling around can make an awful racket! Add to that deck blocks without a stand up (spring thingy or plastic disk or short piece of bungy, to keep the deck block from whacking the deck), lines slapping around the mast (crank 'um tight, or tie them off), loose cabinet doors banging around (door catches or barrel bolts). Good rest, even in boisterous seas, is very important for a good sea crew. Sleep deprived crew tend to make more mistakes, ones that can hurt you or the boat. Fair winds and calm seas to you!

    Hi guys that was a nice mahi. Dan since you guys are on a sailboat you do not have the vibration from the motor. Let the line out about 20 to 25 yard that way you can pull the fish all the way in faster. You also may want to use a second line since they travel in pairs or more if you miss one the mate will be chasing the second line. You will not need a pole tie the spool to the life line using a bungee cord and clip the line to the life line using a clothes pin that will also be your fish on alarm. It worked well for us fishing with my dad in Haiti. Good luck I will be watching

    What's the yellow flag for?

  • @SailingUma

    @SailingUma

    6 жыл бұрын

    its a quarantine flag (Q flag) when you show up in a new country, you fly this flag on the starboard side to indicate that you haven't checked in with customs and immigration yet. Once you check in, you replace it with a small flag of the country that you are in.

    Excuse my ignorance, what was the yellow flag you rose when getting ready to pull in?

  • @SailingUma

    @SailingUma

    3 жыл бұрын

    It's called a "Q" flag, meaning Quarantine. It comes from a very long tradition of vessels which had to quarantine for 14 days when arriving in a new port to make sure it wasn't carrying any deadly disease before offloading goods. Now it's just a signal to authorities that a vessel hasn't officially cleared in with customs and immigration when arriving to a new country. Once the clearance is granted, the yellow flag is replaced by the countries flag, called a "courtesy flag". This signals that the vessel has legally cleared in and is free to roam.
