Perfect Cross Training Blend?

Спорт

What is the perfect cross training blend? In the martial arts, there can be hundreds of potential arts to choose from so if you're going to train in multiple styles, how do you know which blend is the right blend? We're going to explore that, with guest Grandmaster Darryl Vidal, and pick our own blend of martial arts that we feel would work well.

    This is a great concept. Seriously, this is an amazing philosophical/mental exercise. Taking away the style you already train in will hopefully make people think deeper about what they know/don't know about other styles. Fantastic work again!

    I'm glad you both chose Krav Maga as one of your 3 options. There's so much you wouldn't get from a sport or traditional martial art, if your goal is self defense. I've personally trained in Krav Maga Global since late 2015. Before then, I did Kickboxing, Goju Karate, Judo, and Taiho Jutsu. I found KMG to fill in the void I was looking for, but I would like to try other self defense systems. If I had to choose 3 new styles, it would be Urban Combatives, Senshido/Richard Dimitri. For my third pic, it would either be FMA or Sambo. FMA, so I can learn to use weapons or everyday objects, which most self defense don't go that far in depth. Sambo, because it's a well rounded grappling style, which most self defense lacks a lot of.

    I grew up practicing Kenpo, Escrima and Hung Gar Kung fu.. When people ask me what styles their kids should train, they almost always expect me to say the styles that I train and teach. However I always say: Judo, Boxing and Capoeira Capoeira in elementary school: For core strength, full body control, advanced coordination, great kicks and takedowns. As fighting in elementary school is most often never serious and doing capoeira will give a child the agility to evade, takedowns to passively deal with an attacker and kicks to keep an attacker away. Judo in intermediate school: For Throws, Sweeps and fundamental ground grappling skill, as many tussles and shoving matches happen in intermediate school. Boxing in highschool: To learn how to defend yourself in a fist fight. As many fist fights happen in highschool.

Some catch wrestling to give me some solid grappling. I was trying to avoid more well known martial arts for my list like BJJ and judo, it’s not a dis to them I think they’re very effective arts.

    for an MMA style for self defense: Combat Sambo, Kajukenbo, & Hapkido. Best Kicks: Savate, Jeet Kune Do, & Japanese Kickboxing. Best Punches: Peek-a-Boo Boxing, & Panantukan(Filipino Boxing). Best Grappling: Sport Sambo(Sambo Wrestling), & Submission Wrestling. But personally if i can get back into martial arts I think learning American Kenpo might better for me for getting back into martial arts i did Tae Kwon Do(ATA) during my high school years 2006-2008. So start with American Kenpo then hopefully 3 years or more Combat Sambo be popularize by now so i can learn that too and then Eskrima/Kali/Arnis which would bend all together effective!

    I think to build my ideal mix of martial arts I would start with with Dutch style kickboxing, which is a bit of a cheat cause it mixes elements of western boxing with Kyokushin karate and Muay Thai. I would go a bit more exotic with Panatukan, or Filipino dirty boxing, because it’s less for competition and more for street defense. Close quarters striking with punches, kicks, elbows, head butts and trapping limbs. And to balance out to complete my fighting toolbox I would want to train in Judo, because of the close proximity grappling with throws and slams. Also, as a person of Vietnamese ancestry I personally appreciate the acknowledgement of Vovinam

    I went to junior and senior high school with a guy who trained in San Soo Kung Fu. I also went to school with a guy who was an American kenpo stylist. We were all part of a small clique of guy who were primarily martial artists. Both guys were Irish and both guy disliked each other. I basically the peace maker. What's funny, is that years later I read about the history of Ed Parker and Jimmy Woo. Some of it was said to have not been too positive. I wonder if they might have known the Parker-Woo connection? Back on topic. For my first or base art (striking), I'd chose either Okinawan karate (goju-ryu or shorin-ryu) or Kajukenbo. The latter being America's first mixed martial art. My second choice would be traditional Jujitsu or Hapkido because of their throwing or stand up joint manipulations. My third choice would be Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu or Kosen [rule set] Judo, for the the ground work.

  • @assoverteakettle
    @assoverteakettle Жыл бұрын

    Very great choices! Sambo - Oleg Taktarov was probably the first, and early UFC, fighter to bring sambo into mainstream martial arts conscious and how effective it is. A hybrid grappling art incorporating judo and wrestling. But I don't think a martial art has to be Asian to be exotic. I think sambo is very exotic because it's quite rare. Muay Thai - is also a great choice and, as Darryl Vidal mentioned because it incorporates realistic sparring. devastating kicks, and stand up trips and throws. It also encourages strong body and mind using A LOT of conditioning exercises (agonizing ab work, push ups, plyometrics) to make you tolerant of physical and mental pain. Contrary to the rough and tumble reputation, however, the modern way of practicing muay Thai is to practice safely and that you need not go full contact during regular practice. In fact, it's discouraged unless you're preparing for competition in order to preserve your body. Therefore, it's quite safe to practice. The other great thing about muay Thai is that it actually synthesizes many principles found in martial arts often written off as "bullshido". I've only started to understand the potential effectiveness of wing chun and aikido after taking up muay Thai. In fact, I theorize that if wing chun was ever a combat effective martial art that it probably looked a lot more like muay Thai. The long guard in muay Thai looks a lot - in theory - like the general wing chun ready position (man sao/wu sao). It is extended out far from the body and can be used defensively to intercept or protect you from an aggressive opponent, to measure off distance and range, or initiate an attack like a short jab or push. The defensive stance in muay Thai (weight on the rear leg/front foot tapping and ready to throw a teep) works just like using the front kick in wing chun. The pummeling and stand up clinching to gain control of the opponent's arms and head is to trap them so you can use your close range weapons of elbows and knees and trips -- sounds a lot like chi sao. No? This is not to say muay Thai vindicates wing chun because the two arts are practiced very differently which counts for a lot. Similarly there are many unbalancing and momentum throws in muay Thai closely emulate throws you would see in aikido such as iriminage and aiki-otoshi. Again, not to say that muay Thai vindicates aikido. It just shows the potential that what is often written off as "bullshido" can work if practiced with intention and a resisting opponent. I love the kyokushin choice and that would also be on my short list. The very serious training along with the tradition and formalities of karate. I roll my eyes whenever I see comments like: "Kyokushin karate guys don't punch to the face so it teaches them bad habits for self defence". Um, NO. First off all kyokushin practitioners train with real sparring. Secondly, they do not punch to the face so they can practice regularly. Show me anyone that regularly punches full contact to the face with bare knuckles -- or even wrapped and gloved -- and I'll show you a martial art that isn't very sustainable with participants getting injured, or worse, suffering concussions and head injuries. Kyokushin practitioners know how to strike and - most importantly - they know about range from regular sparring. Finally, I knew a kyokushin fighter who was also a bouncer and he never had a problem finding someone's jaw when the circumstances required it. Krav maga - I totally agree that unfortunately krav has become the new JKD where the original intention and purpose has often become lost with infighting in the organization or unqualified people, and charlatans, claiming to teach the real Krav Maga. If you can find a legitimate trainer with realistic technique then you have something there. Sanda/sanshou - another excellent choice and on that was also in my top five. BJJ - Although currently a purple belt in BJJ, I really think for self defence that judo might be a better choice. I won't go into too many reasons why but judo will make you much better in stand up throwing than BJJ because although many BJJ clubs teach judo throws but they are not really practiced regularly since most of the time your "rolls" start on the ground or BJJ practitioners will often defensively lean forward or tend to pull guard to avoid getting thrown (something you wouldn't do on "da streetz"). The stand up throwing/takedown and ability to have "good base" on your feet counts more for street self defence because tusseling almost always ends up from stand up clinching (eg bad guy pushes, shoves or grabs you by the collar). If you watch Chadi's judo channel you will see him post some pretty nasty real self-defence videos where someone is using a judo throw like seo-nage where the attacker is being spiked to the ground on their head -- no need to punch them, and no need to put a rear naked choke on them because their lights have already gone out after they smacked the ground head first. Judo also has the basic ground techniques (newaza) you would find in BJJ to make you fully competent on the ground if someone who is untrained takes you to the ground. The only drawback to judo is that it is quite hard on the body compared to BJJ. I don't know if they count as martial arts but I would consider catch wrestling, law enforcement tactics like Jim Wagner's Knife Disarms for Law Enforcement, and Tony Blauer's S.P.E.A.R. system to condition yourself against an ambush type attack which the best sport martial arts will not teach you. For fun that I have never done before: pencak silat, arnis, and kendo.

    I'm confused on the premise? Like the arts I train in I've never trained in? Or am I picking 3 martial arts I make up? Or is it those three I've trained no longer exist ??

    @@ryandemarest3202 Agreed. Kenpo Karate and Jeet Kune Do complement each other very well. Kenpo Karate teaches students a detailed and systematic means of self-defense. Conversely, Jeet Kune Do teach students a minimalist approach to self-defense.

    @@ArtofOneDojo Thank You I always been a Ramon The Diamond Dekkers fan altho he fought under Muay Thai rules its clear his style is heavily influenced by Western Boxing and Kyokushin unlike the Thai fighters he fought he actually utilized kyokushin moves the Axe kicks, Mawashi Geri, Wheelkicks and leg kicks and he mixed it with some Mike Tyson style power shot combination and if he added some BJJ to defend against grapplers then his style would be the ultimate Sprawl and Brawl where the grapplers wont have a choice but to fight in a stand up position which will favor the striker with Boxing, Kyokushin and BJJ style

    My martial art doesn't "exist" technically speaking, I'm creating a family martial art from other systems that I have trained in in the past, specifically Wing Chun and Okinawan Kenpo Karate (Shorin Ryu Karate) helped by Kosho Kempo, American Kenpo Karate, Judo with Japanese Jiu-jitsu, Filipino martial arts, Catch Wrestling, Goju Ryu Karate and Chinese Goju which has Ninjitsu and Aikijujutsu as well as boxing.
