    Actually, Medusa would be considered an easy defeat. Once you get past the Petrifying Gaze, she has little combat experience after so many years. She’s kind of easy pickings if you’re blind.

    Honestly, medusa was defeated fairly quickly in the books too. she was the first real battle that the trio encounters together and I think it lasts for a few pages. The point is that when the three of them work together, they're able to outsmart these monsters in a way that other demigods aren't typically able to do.

    just to clarify, grover is a satyr and in the book they grow half as fast as humans, so he may be 24 but hes mentally and physically around the same age as the other two- around middle school. there are many retellings of medusa’s story. in an older version, medusa was already a monster along with her two sisters and they are called the gorgons. later, though, in ovid’s retelling (a roman who probably wanted to make the greeks seem more barbaric) medusa was someone who tended to athenas remples and worshipped her, a handmaiden but not really a priest, and she was r*ped by poseidon in athenas temple. although against her will, athena cursed her for this (poseidon got off easy). I like this retelling a lot and I appreciate the writers for telling her story this way! it humanizes her and adds complexity to her and other characters

    She is also the goddess of craft and intelligence and that fight (against Medusa) is not so much about the war like Aries kids would be good at but outwit her or creating a strategy that Medusa won't see coming so it was a perfect demonstration of Annabeth's skillset as daughter of Athena.

    There are several versions of the Medusa myth - that she was always a monster; that she was a priestess of Athena who willingly had sex with Poseidon in Athena's temple; that she was raped by Poseidon. As for the head, that they took it with them was one of the most ridiculous parts of that ridiculous Percy Jackson movie. That would be like walking around with a live grenade. This series follows the book and sends it to Olympus.

    Annabeth should be the leader because she is the best warrior in the camp, she is the smartest in the group being the daughter of the goddess of wisdom, she is the most experienced leader in the group, and she didn't make bad decisions she is just blunt and cold. Percy shouldn't because he has never been a leader yet and he is inexperienced at fighting and being a demigod in general. Also, they don't need Percy for the quest if you remember in this episode the monster (ms.dodds) was telling her to give Percy so Annabeth could complete this quest without interruptions. But since she isn't a backstabber she didn't give him up just like how percy didn't give them up to Mudussa.

    I believe the version of Medusa that they went with was more of the Roman version than the Greek mythology version. In this version Posideon assaulted Medusa & she prayed to Athena for help, but instead Athena punished her & banished her from her temple bc she 'embarrassed her'. *Note: im not an expert I only wrote what I remember so if I'm wrong pls don't attack me y'all.*

  • @ipurpleu1668

    It's not quite the Roman version of it, but Roman mythology has basically the same origin as well. In a lot of Greek writing and art, it didn't show the origin of Medusa, just showed her within the tale of Perseus beheading her. The first pieces of written stories about her origin was by a Roman poet who wrote about her as a virgin maidan. But there was a little bit of Greek art that showed this, so it was still probably originated from the Greeks. The Romans then changed the story to fit their gods, Neptune as Poseidon and Minerva as Athena. The Romans only changed the gods' name but kept monsters, heroes, and a lot of creatures the same within their mythology. It has always been a mixture of Poseidon assaulting Medusa in Athena's temple, them found kissing in Athena's temple, them falling in love, etc. Most myths don't have one solid story.

    @ipurpleu1668

    @@Andjelka99 not quite. There is Greek art that shows her as a maiden before turning into a gorgon. It was just a Roman poet whose pieces of writing has been saved over thousands of years. It is likely that the story was passed down verbally from the Greeks though, seeing how there was art of it already and most Roman stories were just Greek stories with name changes.

    To clear something up: 1. Athena cursed Medusa because she and Posedion did it in one of her temples. She also curse her sisters for either helping or because they were related to Medusa. 2. In the book the Greek gods move to whatever western country is the most powerful, which is why Olympus is in New York and why so many Greek monsters and stuff are in America to begin with. 3. They weren't sure if Percy's mom was alive or not. 4. Monsters and the gods can't really 'die'. Whenever someone kills a monster their body turns to dust and they will reform in tartarus before escaping back into the mortal world. But if you cut off the head of a monster you can keep it as a spoil of war. 5. In the book, the police were after Percy because everytime he fights a monster it looks like he randomly attacked someone or it made him look like a terrorist.

    So I just watched all 5 episodes of the series so far and something felt off. So then I reread the first book. And now I’m kinda annoyed. So here’s my thing I, do like the casting, the fighting, monsters and the acting. But the only two things I don’t like is how less tense it is in the show then the book. Like gabbe in the show is a bumb. In the book, he was a bum, abusive, and a bully. Like there’s a quote from the book “I don’t know when but gabbe had hit my mom”. Or like when Percy mentions Zeus name a few times, the camp is over run with rain and thunder clouds. Like you really can’t mention a gods or a monsters name. And no matter what you can’t use phones and stuff like that. It just everything that’s supposed to be mentioned with such intensity in the book it just introduce so causally. Like in the show they don’t really explain what each god does when they introduce a new god. In the book when they showed Mr. D they had Percy figure it out. And no matter what god it was, they created an aura, glowing eyes, a growl, or the environment around them rumbled to show they should be feared.No intensity, just mentioning them casually. They teased more with who Thalia grace is, who was on the quest with her, how much alike her and Percy are, and her being a part of the big 3. They teased about it through out the book. It was like one of those things you don’t talk about like Jason Todd’s death from Batman. But they just mentioned her name and who she was just so casually. The second thing I don’t like is how fast moving. Because there are things they do skip over, like Chiron as Percy’s teacher wasn’t just his teacher. He was his father figure. Like Alaric saltzman and hope from legacies. In the first few chapters we focused on that. It’s emotional because he has very little in his life that makes him happy. They stretched out Percy meeting Annabeth in the book when she was showing around camp. It just it feels really rushed and casual . Like the vibe I got from just reading the book again was the same kinda vibe in between watching Harry Potter and sorcerers stone through watching Harry Potter prisoner of Azkaban. Not too creepy, but magical, crappy life, adventurous, and so much focus on emotional bonds. Just instead of wizards you have Demi gods. So I kinda like the show but I also want them to put more depth into certain relationships. And more mystery with intensity.

    They toned down Gabe because viewers would stop watching the show because it could be triggering for some people. There is a theory since Percy doesn’t know they are waiting for later to show how awful he is. Rick changed it to have Luke show him around instead of Annabeth because to grow the friendship.

    A big reason they probably didn't show the 'power' of the gods' and monsters' names is because it was heavily dropped in the books, pretty much after the first book. So it's probably better to just not introduce it in the series. It also feels a lot like 'He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named', so they probably didn't want people first watching to feel like they were coping Harry Potter.

    Gabe is a lot more asshole-ish in the beginning but Percy didnt find out about the physical abuse until the 2nd to last chapter so if they bring it up, they'll address it in the last episode. With regards to not being able to name the gods/monsters, it's something you can't really translate to the TV show. The book characters wouldn't verbally name the gods/monsters but they'd think about those names in their thoughts so that the readers would know who they were talking about. But you can't show Percy's thoughts in live action so they did away with that tidbit (especially since the books drop that fact in HoO since they keep saying the names of monsters and Gaea outloud). This change is probably to let the kids watching the show know who these beings are and to keep all the series consistent And Percy wasn't really all that close with Chiron (in The Lightning Thief anyway). Chiron was a mentor but not a father figure. The only reason Chiron played a huge mentor role is because in the books, Sally never taught Percy anything about Greek Mythology or being a Demigod. Percy learned about that from Chiron and Annabeth. So Chiron gets mentioned a lot bc Percy references Chiron teaching him myths whenever he remembers something about a god or monster. They gave that role to Sally so that she'll be a more proactive mother figure to Percy. I like that change. And they swapped Annabeth's role with Luke to let them have a closer bond/make Luke the mentor/older brother figure Percy saw him as. The show has limited time and since Annabeth is gonna be a huge focus for the rest of the season, they let Luke have that moment bc he needs the focus. With regards to the gods, Percy says in the Lightning Thief that Hades was the first god that looked like a god. Ares and Dionysius looked like normal humans minus Ares' fire eyes (imo that would look goofy in life action not really intimidating). Although I do wish they kept Dionysius' intensity a bit. And with the explanations for the gods, that's explained in Percy's internal monologues and you don't hear that in the show. Adding that in makes the dialogue clunky so they kinda removed it but they did explain each of the gods' domains a bit. They didn't do it with Dionysius but they did do it with Athena, Poseidon, Hephaestus, Hermes and Ares in the show. Also, Thalia wasn't all that talked about in the books and she wasnt this whole hidden secret. They talked very openly about Thalia. The show added more about her than the book did (or at least incorporated bits of the demigod diaries in regards to Luke, Thalia and Annabeth's early relationship) and Percy comparing himself to Thalia doesn't start until the 2nd/3rd book. They do compare them a bit in the show, like in the train scene. And in the first book, things were light and fun and not really all that intense (they had time to go on a tourist trip in the middle of the quest in the books). And they were still in the modern world so it wasn't really all that magical. It's more magical in Sea of Monsters imo. And didn't really focus on emotional bonds all too much in the books. It was a more plot heavy book than character heavy. There's lots of fun friendship moments in the books (like them playing hackeysack while waiting for the bus) but they kinda became insta friends. It's nice to see them grow closer in the show since they start off on the wrong foot. I also like that they give Grover more depth bc book Grover...is just really there as a comic relief side kick in the first book. He doesn't have any serious or cool moments like show Grover does (episode 5) nor does he ever really get to he upset. They actually let him grieve for his uncle in the show whereas the uncle is a throwaway joke in the books. I do wish we got more camp focus but due to the number of episodes given and the run time, I'd rather they rush to get onto the quest instead of waste time in camp and rush the quest adventures. Especially since the show is aimed at non book readers and they'd be bored if we spend too long at camp. (Although the entire thing could've been fixed if we got hour long episodes but alas, Disney likes short stuff)

    @@Zi-Ara03 yea but there is like more development with Percy and Annabeth in the book. Plus because a lot of us have the read the book and we do know who the lighting thief. Is there are parts that gives clues of who it could be that the show skipped over. So it doesn’t feel like its going to be a good reveal. And when mean like emotional moments i mean like in the Scott and stiles relationship from teen wolf. Or Damon and Bonnie relationship from vampire diaries, or hope and Alaric from legacies. There were some scenes in the book they did go in depth with character relationships.
