    And the ironic part is that the real Mad Hatter - not the one in Bruce's dream - has no idea what goes on in Bruce's dream! He knows he's basically giving Batman what he desires most, albeit in dream form, but still doesn't know what that is exactly. So Hatter's completely oblivious to just how badly he fucked with Batman's head just then, think about that.

    He did it again in the Batman Adventures comic book (with Nightwing, Robin, Batgirl tracking him down to save Batman), which had him dreaming about fighting the Bat villains in a sliver age setting. But this time Tech's intentions were good- he noticed every time they fought, Bats never seemed happy with his victories(" In fact, I'd say you were the saddest man I'd ever met.."), so Hatter just wanted to try to help him be happy (which is how Bruce eventually realized he was dreaming, when his partners asked. I doubt it. It's a great episode but it plays to the strengths of being a TV show here - the character and world is already established so we easily follow Bruce's confusion about the elements of his life being wrong. On top of that it'd be hard to stretch this out without making it implausible or boring. It's a great episode but it's as long as it needs to be.

    I think the reason for the clarity of Wayne Enterprises and W.E. could be the fact that he sees them as logos, pictorial representations. If it existed in the series, the giant golden arches of M for McDonald's wouldn't be a different letter as that is not just a letter but a logo as well. With Wayne Enterprises' full-size logo, it would be comparable to the logo for MasterCard, with the name being a part of the logo design. Psychologically, we automatically correct the phrase because we are familiar with what it should show. But with a random jewelry store that Bruce is not familiar with, the words printed in a book he may not have read, or the words telling a new bit of information in the newspaper, his mind had never processed them before, so the mind threw in letters, numbers, and symbols to fill in that part as his subconscious knows something goes there but isn't sure what it should be or look like.

  • @Regfife

    That jives with how the written word appears in my own dreams. Even though I read a lot, letters rarely appear in my dreams, and when I wake up, anything I "read" is usually the first thing to fade from my memory. The exceptions are single legible words or something I've read before.

    "For the man who has everything" was a very interesting call back to this episode in JLU, it used a different device but the crux was the same though with Superman being the main target (with Bruce briefly being affected as well), and we see Superman's reaction to the one who inflicted the dream on him mirroring Bruce's rather closely with a level of anger we'd only ever seen him reserve for Darkseid up to that point.

  • @Sayrden

    @Sayrden

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@benjaminbierley2074 In terms of which one did it better, I think the split between this and "For the Man Who Has Everything" is about 50-50. Perchance to Dream - Batman's fantasy matches the character better. I'm not sure why Superman should prefer to live on a planet he never knew when he has a loving family on Earth. - It's a good mystery. In FtMWHE, we know the truth from the beginning. - The dream imagery is more evocative and generally carries more emotional weight. For the Man Who Has Everything - Mongul's motivation seems better - he wants to kill Superman's friends while Superman stands there helpless. His sadistic line "I created a prison you couldn't leave without sacrificing your heart's desire; it must've been like tearing off your own arm" shows that he's somewhat okay with Superman waking up if he gets to watch Superman suffer. But Tetch could've just killed Batman, and it wouldn't have been too hard to give a reason he couldn't (e.g., Batman has Alice hidden somewhere, and Tetch plans to use the dream to find out where). - Superman's moment of decision hits hard - he doesn't want to leave the dream, but he needs to save his friends. Once Bruce realizes that the dream isn't real, he doesn't want to stay.

The first is a kid friendly but still badass take on "I'll see you in hell" and the fact that Bruce doesn't know if it will actually work just adds to the awesomeness. And it’s a trial that all heroes have to go through. Their own personal paradise or their duty as a hero. People forget. Being a hero is not fun. It’s fulfilling and some quipping hero’s make it fun when they can, but, on the whole, being a hero isn’t fun. Even for Superman. Where everything he does is difficult, not because it’s tiring, but because it takes effort to not go overboard and destroy everything, it is taking time away from his interests, his passions, and his relationships.

I once paired it with a view of the Justice League's "For the Man Who Has Everything". For those who don't know, a deposed space emperor named Mongo does the same thing to Superman. It is great because for the briefest of moments, Batman is falls under the same spell. In that dream, he sees his father stand up and beat the crook who would have killed them. While Perchance nails the feels in 22 minutes, 'Everything' did it in 2. It hits in so many feels.

    While it is impossible to read in a dream, it is possible to see text clearly so long as you're not trying to read them. The shapes remain until you start to focus. I think that's what happened with the company logo and initials. As you said, it's probably due to Bruce being so familiar with it. He didn't attempt to read the company name, because why would he need to, but I bet the letters would appear like they did else where if he tried.

    @@promontorium Dreams are weirdly inconsistent, sometimes in annoying ways, sometimes in awesome ways. I've been in dreams before where I've been trapped in the same familiar place (some building and field under zombie attack), where I didn't remember I'd dreamed the area before until I woke up from the second one. I've also had dreams where I was able to fly by physically clenching some part of my gut and concentrating really hard and practicing "all day," to the point where once I finally woke up, it took a long, depressing 5 minutes for me to finally give up trying to get the ability back because it felt so perfectly real. I really hope I live to see the day when we can induce and program lucid dreams. First thing I'll do is see if I can read. XD Also about dreaming in different languages, I knew a sign language interpreter in high school who said one of his kids dreamed God was speaking to him in a dream, but he looked like two giant hands coming out of the clouds to do sign language. Our brains do weird stuff lol

    And it's heartbreaking for everyone involved. Mad Hatter didn't want to kill Batman, he just wanted to be rid of him. He used his resources to find this happy medium (at least in his mind). Bruce wanted to be happy in his fictional world. It was as close to complete happiness that he's ever come. Parents are alive, girl by his side, someone still watching over Gotham... so close to perfect. And when it all falls apart, it falls apart for everyone involved. From everyone getting what they wanted to no one getting what they wanted in an instant. Just great writing from beginning to end.

Since all of them had very recent bouts with nightmares, this encouraged everyone to have a round of coffee instead. Then I think of this episode. Both episodes are wonderful in their respective shows and deserve a couple of watches each.

    Re: Hatter Unmasking Batman, I took the specifics of Bruce's dream, the Hatter's presence in it as Batman, and the fact that Hatter knew what Batman wanted deep down to mean that he already knows Batman's alternate identity. The key is he doesn't have a reason to reveal it or anything, it wouldn't do him any good. As far as not just killing him while he slept? While the Mad Hatter isn't above murder, I think his intent different. If he murdered Batman successfully, that would put a target on his back. But if Batman just quietly vanished? Just my thoughts.

    The only big flaw with the episode is the assertion that it's impossible to read in dreams. In reality, this varies a lot from person to person, and even from dream to dream for the same person. This could've been fixed just by instead having Bruce say, "I've never been able to read in my dreams," or something to that effect. But aside from that? An amazing episode, and a true classic.

    I know its been touch on by you and others, but another reason this episode is the best is because even though we all know it's a dream and we want him to keep being the caped crusader we all know and love, a small part of us actually want this to be real. For everything that he's gone through... the constant battles, the losses, the wear and tear of being Gotham's savior, he's been long overdue for a happy ending. The dream gives him that and more.. a loving fiance, someone else taking up the mantle, and most importantly, his parents alive and well. We all want that for Bruce and when the illusion is broken, our hearts break along with his.
