PERCH FISHING MASTERS | SEASON 2 | EPISODE 2 - THOM HUNT

Спорт

I'm out on the bank with another Perch Fishing Master, this time Thom Hunt. Thom operates at highest level when it comes to lure fishing. He’s currently captain of Team Englands Lure Squad, with multiple tournament wins under his belt on boats, rivers, canals, street fishing in UK and Europe and has caught loads of VERY BIG PERCH! In the video he runs through his lures and also demonstrates that you're only ever one bite away from catching a very special fish, when he catches some cracking Perch for the LOTB cameras!
This episode is packed full of tips and tactics to help us improve our lure fishing, so pay attention because this is an absolute master class in perch fishing with lures :)
THANK YOU Thom for not only sharing all your knowledge with us but for also sticking with it and catching a cracking canal Perch to share on the channel.

    Followed Thom's advice , had a session with crankbaits , learned loads about action and depths. Very effective on my rocky river . Hooked a nice chub. I change the trebles to singles as per Andrews knots channel , I lip hooked a micro lure -the tail end of a bloodteeze would be ideal , impressed with the action , now thinking of trying the same on the belly hook . If you have trouble finding knotable trace wire , google Flexonit and Cannelle , I use BFS gear , and after watching Thom, I had to really work on the retrieve because baitcasters haul in more line per turn the fixed spools . Perchmasters a brill idea , tight lines y'all .

    Interesting comment. I’d have to argue that on the contrary to convincing myself, that the principles I discuss convince the fish, more often than if I didn’t use them. That’s exactly how you can win a tournament, by catching more, and bigger fish than anyone else can on that day. I’d suggest my trophy cabinet and track record is evidence that these principles work. But if you think I’m just convincing myself maybe you’re right and I’m just really really lucky!

    On a boat I’ll have multiple rods set up… for jerkbaits I like extra-fast rods and use a custom built 6’10”. Maybe not everything perfectly but for 1 rod for a day it has me covered for multiple techniques

    Brilliant nick, these perch masters are absolutely amazing. Frustrating at times, I employ these tactics, almost to the t, probably because I've been following Thom and various other fantastic lure anglers for some time, it doesn't make the pbs come any quicker though lol, probably venue and hot spot specific (thats what i keep telling myself anyway lol). An interesting point that Thom never mentioned on here but has on his channel, also a very good youtuber I have met in person(and bass anglers), say that in summer with hard baits more wiggle is better(conditions depending), but in winter the opposite is true. You have to get some of these guys back especially Thom, Ash and Matt during the depths of winter, I want to say to separate the men from the boys but that would be blasphemy. It would be great to see these guys winter tactics. Also is a pike masters on the cards I think it should be, again especially during the depths of winter lure fishing for them. Thanks for the great vids can't wait to see more, I wish you and yours the best and hope for more fantastic content in the future, great channel nick keep up the great work.

    Yes, good shout about getting them back in really cold conditions. I think it was pretty cold for Matts but it’s a good shout. I have a couple of really good anglers booked in for after Xmas so that should be good 👍 Thanks for checking out the video!

    Absolutely brilliant, Thom 's a it of a star too. Some very interesting information and something I have never been to shore about ( fishing for over 60 years now) when to put a wire trace on ?? Thom's advise, treble hook, wire trace, sounds pretty sound to me. Also knotting fluro carbon loop to knotble wire? Does the wire not cut or shred the fluro carbon?? A great bit of viewing very informative and above all very enjoyable to watch. Cheers mate Les.

    Thanks mate. That wire by AFW is coated in a thin layer of nylon. That’s why it’s knots really nicely. I’ve been using it in 6lb and 11lb. It’s excellent. Thom certainly is a bit of star!! 👍👍👍

    Shadteez slim is definitely my confidence bait especially for zander, along with Relax Bass. Something about that small paddle and thin wrist that make zanders go crazy.

    Been doing well on the Shasteez for pike. The venue has a lot of silver fish so a natural coloured Shadteez is fishing well 👍

    Loving this series Nick, so much info that is transferable to my own fishing. One request/query...any plans for a catch up with a perch master specialising in BIG waters? I'm a Scottish angler targeting big lochs for perch and would love to get some expert insights into targeting these big rugged waters. Keep up the guid work!

    Great series of videos these. Just a question though, as I'm a noob at perch fishing. What's the thinking behind changing to wire only when using trebles? I was thinking that if pike were around at all I would use wire traces, but maybe there's some reason it's ok to stick with fluoro when using single hooks?

  • @Lifeonthebank

    @Lifeonthebank

    You make a good point to be fair, if you think you’re going to catch pike then use a trace (trebles or no trebles) 👍👍

    Yes for clarity if I’ve ever got trebles on then it’s definitely combined with a wire trace. For single hooks you can fish Fluoro or wire, make the judgement based on your venue and pike stocks

    I've been fishing for 35+ years and have decided to specialise my fishing to catch my pb perch on a lure. I have a slight problem.. how do you use these finesse baits without getting bit off by pike? I've 20 lb flourocarbon ordered but will that be strong enough? How do you get away with using 6lb flourocarbon? Even micro drop shotting for me seems to attract pike I've tried worm imitations, creature baits, half inch tiny, tiny micro baits and Mr pike still hit me!

    Hey, I wonder, could you help me? I've been fishing perch on canals for a good while now, and have caught many fish. However, I recently caught a 2lb 8oz on a 2g jighead and finesse stick lure, however once I got him on the bank I realised he was bleeding from his gills, the hook was bedded next to his tongue, is there anything I could have done or any reason why this would have happened?

    Sam delasalle with his 18lb braid and 16lb fluoro would disagree with you massively lol, making everything ultra fine is just confidence for the angler, if fluoro is invisible what does it matter how heavy it is? And if your braid is pink, orange or green you cant be too worried about seeing it. Surely it all depends on what size fish and how many you are after.

  • @leejacksonfishing

    @leejacksonfishing

    All situational imo. smaller lures will act more naturally on a lighter fluoro but then it will break on a snag, where as a lure that’s 5g+ will still act quite natural on a heavier fluoro of around 10-20lb breaking strain. Then there is the lures fall rate “hang time” thicker fluoro cuts through the water slower than a thin one ect ect 👍🏻🎣

    Yes so just for clarity, I would always suggest tailoring your equipment to any given situation. There are many factors that come in to line (and arguably rod) selection. I think Sam was on a river fishing 7g+, and obviously fishing a canal like we were for that situations I’d never dream of 7g or heavy Fluoro. But on a reservoir I would consider even heavier potentially. Although Fluoro is ‘invisible’ that only considers the visual aspect of the line, not the weight or thickness of it which clearly also effects the presentation of the lure. Otherwise, using your logic, we would all just fish 70lb Fluoro for any species because it’s ‘invisible’ but clearly I assume this is not even an idea you’d be willing to entertain!?!
