Pepin Adjustable Dumbbells Review: The Spin-Lock Adjustable Dumbbells That Go Heavy!

Pepin Adjustable Dumbbells use an updated spin-lock system to get you yoked and stoked.
Spin-Lock Adjustable Dumbbells have been around for decades. They're cheap, rather quick to change, and use standard plates. The issue is they can't go very heavy and create cavities in your quads when going back for a bench press.
Pepin Dumbbells work to fix these problems. They're made in Canada, have nice knurling and are a simple, nice addition to a home gym.
They're not the only option though. BaadAss Dumbbells are a similar design and today we compare the two.

Here’s the advantage of having relatively inexpensive handles available independent the proprietary weights: once you buy all your stack of standard iron, you can slowly buy more handles for supersets and drop sets. Not a bad option.

Lots of criticism in the comments regarding Pepins price, remember one guy is making these out of a shop not much larger than a two car garage. You'll receive poor quality plates from baadass and I believe iron masters are made overseas, Pepins are priced fairly considering current market conditions and manufacturing process. Love the vids Coop, consider getting a pair of digital calipers to compare handle diameters, plate thickness, and even the guage of racks for those amazon specials.

I've owned them for 9 months to a year, really have only ever used them from 95lbs to 120lbs, so maybe 2 or 3 times a day, 5 days a week. For the price they are the best. I like them but obviously like any other DB like these, the time it takes to change the weight is annoying, but it's the best/cheapest option if you need this kind of weight. I have dropped them pretty hard with over 100lbs and absolutely nothing happened other than them loosening up a tiny bit.

The variation of dumbbells is extremely useful for a small person like me kzread.infoUgkxP26Tir6n60vUkdtn4mbwhRO8cwuJQNy2 But the dumbbell size being large it's hard to do certain exercises like deadlift ( I have to have my hands and legs a bit wider to accommodate the size of the DB )Otherwise happy with the purchase. No excuse not to lift weight when it's snowing outside.

Having those Pepin Dumbbells for more than 6 months now... still as solid as the first day! If you have to drop your dumbells on the floor, I guess they are too heavy for you. I’ve never needed to drop them even when bench pressing. I give them a 9.5/10 just because perfection doesn’t exist. Proud Canadian right here.

I still use a spin lock ez curl bar , tricep bar , and trap bar/suitcase lift bar. I have 2 of each so I don't have to change weights in the middle of a workout. Dumbbells are old school hex shaped 5lbs to 150lbs. I also still have a homemade squat and bench press rack I built in the early 80's. All this fancy shit wasn't around 40 years ago when I started lifting. And it all still does the job just fine.

I prefer this style myself. As for super setting I would pair it with a curl bar or straight bar movement. I don't do a lot of "run the rack" sort of working out, and that would be the only hindrance for someone in my opinion. At my age I tend to move up in weight per set in increments anyway so I'm changing weight or at the very least putting things away and getting the next weight or equipment set up in between sets. I think the price on these is actually pretty affordable, considering I just paid 75.00 for a set of 35 DB's from Wal-Mart. I'm thinking I might just order a set of these!!!

They are not for supersets but they will not break on you and they won't break your wallet.

  • @unmannedtank
    @unmannedtank3 жыл бұрын

Great review. Having used spinlock dumbbells, using these would actually be a major downgrade. The amount of time and effort it took to switch weights for the spinlocks were one of the main reason why I've switched to Powerblocks. With spinlocks, I would rack and unrack them like you would doing deadlifts with a barbell - leave the dumbbells down on its side, unlock both collars at once, unrack and rerack the plates on one end, and then do the same for the other end. With these, it looks like I have to tip them onto one side while balancing the other end, unlock one collar and make sure that the plates don't slide or move at all, stack/unstack while balancing the plates, lock them in, and then do it again for the other end. Even with 85lbs, you're stacking and balancing four plates on top of each other. The setup just sounds like a major, major pain in the ass. One thing that's nice is that the ends are flat, and doesn't have the handle rod jutting out, so it's much easier to kick them up. But other than that, they sound awful to use. I looked on their site, and they are $700 USD for the 190lb set and $200 for just the handles + collars. Even if you got the weights separately for about $250 or so, you're still much better off going with Powerblocks or something with an easier mechanic, even if they don't go up heavier. The only reason I could see buying these is if you're going to only use them for heavy sets above 90 and replace the increments up to 120bs and have another set of adjustable dumbbells for everything else. Going through a full workout with 5 different exercises plus warmups seem like an absolute nightmare with these.

One thing these kinds of dumbbells help with (versus the old school spin dumbbells) is when lifting heavy. Resting heavy DBs on your damn legs, when the metal end sticks out, is a bitch. These make it so that you can still use your old school 1-inch diameter plates and rest them on your legs. I also like that if you have to swap out your plates, you can just buy some standard 1-inch plates to replace yours when needed.

A downgrade to Baadass is that they aren’t as cosmetically pleasing as Pepins and I do wish they did a polyurethane powder coating.. I’d pay the extra money for that. But they definitely are durable, and gets the job done. Changing weight does suck but I knew that going in. I’ve got the Badass 97.5lbs dumbbells and they’re definitely indestructible. I bought these over Pepin because I didn’t care about the aesthetic of the plates and I wanted something I know would last. Admittedly the time it takes to adjust is an inconvenience. I only superset with other options (barbell, pulley, single db).

I have the 147.5lb set from Baadass, with a set of extra posts that lets me load a single handle to 220lb for Kroc Rows, etc. They're built with ridiculously strong heavy steel, even the plates themselves (their 12.5lb plates are smaller than regular iron 10lb plates). Pretty? No. Heavy duty and guaranteed against breakage? Yes. Steve is the man.

I like them both for different reasons but more often reach for the Power Blocks just because the changing weight selection is faster (and I don't drop them). I'm not yet convinced about the durability of some of the plastic engineered designs (other than Power Blocks which have stood the test of time so far). Seems like someone should just mill a normal width handle from a solid chunk of stainless and include three different screw lengths with the max weight etched on the end for easy reference. Sure, they would be expensive, but they should be as strong as hex dumbbells then and adjustable. Once normal returns you should be able to pick up 1" hole plates for $20for all you can carry. Better yet, make it so you can use the 2" plates everyone already has.

Is there any kind of safety protocol or rule of thumb those dumbbells provide if you are using so many plates that The rod has a hard time screwing in place very far? How much into the threading should it be able to go to feel safe, considering that the less room you have to screw in, the more weight is on the dumbbell. I can imagine a precarious set up like that disconnecting mid-lift and possibly seriously hurting someone.
