Peperomia Obtusifolia care and propagation in soil, water, and leca (with updates)
The peperomia obtusifolia is possible the most common and affordable peperomia worldwide, precisely because it looks like a ‘classic’ houseplant and is very easy to care for and propagate. They have shiny, leathery round leaves that is a joy to pet and calming to the eye. In this video I share the full care tips and propagate this plant using many different techniques. At the end of the video I share a 2 month update so you can see how the parent plant and the cuttings do. I also dabble with leca (semi-hydropinic) and share my surprising finds.

Yes brighter light will help it grow faster, some direct sunlight is good for them but never afternoon/full sun.
Thank you for repeating that we're supposed to check the old leaves for watering and not the new leaves. That's something I didn't know and was causing me some anxiety. Luckily I'm been waiting for the older leaves to get thirsty too. But hearing from you that that's officially the right way to do it is so reassuring!
I love that we don’t have to wait to see the progression! You have a very informative channel, thank you.
I actually put mine in a very low light area and it has been growing very well. Super low maintenance!!! And I love petting their leaves too. So waxy! 😍

If you make a paper circle cover for your LECA bottles, you can keep algae from growing. Just lift the cover or slide it off to see the roots. No algae! :) I use peroxide in each time I top up to keep algae from growing too. Thanks for this video! You've given me courage to prune my Peperomia!

New subscriber from Minnesota USA! Your plant-love is contagious and I enjoy your videos. I have a 30 year old peperomia obtusifolia and I will forever say the full name from now on because of you. This plant has been to hell and back - literally survived a very bad house fire long ago and then years of neglect in the same pot until the pot was recently disintegrating and leaking so I had to transplant it. It is very leggy and twisty so I am now propagating it to get it bushier as your tutorial was sooooo inspiring! I thank you and my peperomia obtusifolia thanks you!

Your enthusiasm, though.
Dear Sean, I also ❤️ peperomia obtusifolia. If you don't want to have algae, put the wessels into a coverpot. You have algae, because the light gets through the water. If you put the glass into a coverpot, it will be in dark and the algae won't grow on the glass. And whenever you want to check on the roots, you can take the glass out of the coverpot and put it back. 😊

Yeppp but it stresses me out to not see the water level (and roots) if its in a cover pot. I think leca is just not for me.
@chriswilliams-white7691
3 жыл бұрын
@@onlyplants you don.t see the roots or water level when you have them in soil either. it seems that for propagation , leca would be faster. Make a sleeve for your propagation. just a though jars and you can pull the sleeve down to see the roots

Great video, wonderful to see the progression. Just adopted one of these and am enjoying it! My cat does not seem to want to chew on these leaves.
Thanks Shawn for sharing this one. I've just plan to repot this guy at my home but still think what's the best media. And I've seen how it's growing well in leca. And will try that way soon. Thanks again !

Love pepperomia ❤️Thnks👍
Just picked up my first indoor plant on Saturday (I've been feeling a lot o urge to help something grow lately) so I picked up Peperomia Obtusifolia Veriegata. So far I'm very happy with my choice, and now I just want to learn as much about this little guy as I can.

Its an excellent choice. The variegated require far more light and in my experience, is very spidermites prone. The variegated is also less forgiving with overwatering 😀
Excellent and informative! I learned a ton, thank you 😊 Now to see how it goes on my long lanky baby that keeps falling over 😅🤞🏻🍀

Its really nice that you show us different ways of propagation and then show us updates. Thank you for sharing your videos. I have different variety of Pepperomia. I tried to propagate the variagated one in water. However, after a week, I saw that the end of the cuttings started turning black. Its rotten. So i cut off the rotten ends and just stuck them on the soil along with the mother plant. One of the cuttings died unfortunately. Im hoping the rest will thrive soon.

Wow!!!
I've had a variegated peperomia obtusifolia for a few years now. It grew wonderfully but was only putting out pure green leaves for most of that time. Recently, it's been putting out absolutely beautiful yellow-green and deep green splash variegation and I'm just delighted! It must really love its new spot at my bedroom window. I also propagated a new plant from it too and I'm hoping the new plant will produce its own variegation someday.

Oh yes they respond well to light. The perfect light meter haha. They can actually take some direct light and will reward you with high variegation. But not full sun

Hey Sean, cool, I like yours, mine is bushier,I prefer them longer I guess, like a Ficus indeed, thanks for the video 😉
You are a house plant whisperer and peperomia extraordinaire. I, on the other hand, am a peperomia killer. They just don't like my care style. I care too much for their liking, I think. Prayer plants love me. I can keep other succulents happy... Hoya, Sansevieria & Cactus for example but when it comes to peperomia they're a complete mystery to me. U're success and care tips have given me courage to try again, though. Thank you for sharing.

Interesting... and you are not alone I seem to have a few people saying the same thing 😅
So beautiful
I found much more success with peperomias when I gave them lots of humidity. I agree about the leca. The roots are interesting, but I think in many ways it is actually more work.
Nice i think i will try it with mine in spring cause it is a single stem and i like it to be bushier as well
You are so adorable i love when your using your pencil ✏

Hey! Great video.
The solid green one is the very one I have! It was struggling however and I ended up putting outside in the back next to my house. Of course, it does not follow the houseplant rules it is growing and doing quite well even though we had quite a bit of rain this summer. Anyway since I put it in the ground the fun part will be digging it up and hoping it survives going back to standard houseplant care........:) Inside it did not like overwatering however outside in a natural environment it is quite happy!
