    Honestly, you're lucky if you get hot dogs in American prison. Definitely one of our higher turn out meals, because usually it's "mechanically separated processed chicken" in EVERYTHING, and when we managed to get hot dogs in, it was like a treat for the whole yard. -Source: myself, a former prison kitchen officer

    Fun fact but American prisons and schools share some of the same meal items 😅 I literally starved at school when I learned that, not that I ever would eat the food most times anyways. Bosco sticks were the only lunch worth it imo. Also as Americans we have to PAY for those foods prisoners also get for free in schools. It is 100,000% better to bring home packed lunch if you want anything yummy and don’t wanna pay extra for snacks. It’s a scary reminder of the idea of the school to prison pipeline and makes me sorry for future generations who need nutrients to grow strong and not follow that path, who aren’t getting their needs met. 😢

    Late comment, but for anyone wondering... Breakfasts usually consist of a boiled egg, slice of bologna, oatmeal and bread. EVERY meal comes with massive amounts of bread. They load you up on carbs in American prisons to, "keep you docile". Not much excercise + carbs = sleep.

    You'd like most the food served in American prisons a lot more. They serve that crap they get a riot. Most don't wear blaze orange either. That's county. In TDC they Wear White (that's when you have more than two years). State Jail (2 years and under) wear orange. They grow all the veg and some of the meat for the state ran facilities in Texas and eat like kings in most facilities. You get full chicken quarters, all kinds of veg and fruit, Mexican stuff like tacos, chili, chicken cutlets, pinto beans/rice and cornbread, salad, fruits, kool-aid, sheet cake and icing, breakfast usually ain't bad, Johnny sacks with baloney sandwiches, milk and fruit and a few extras occasionally if you're on lockdown. Plus all the cheap stuff you can get off commissary to substitute or mix with other food, make spreads, and the condiments, sodas, chips, "zoozoo's and whamwham's" (snack cake stuff). Tuna fish, Jack macks, ham, pickles, candy, coffee (Keefee is the best get you wired out)... You dream it you can almost make it and get it. Work in the kitchen you can eat like you're at the house. Most feds don't get it that good. Especially super Max or Max places. They're getting proper punished.

    North Korean dude is being too optimistic about prison in North Korea. It's also amazing to me how they're talking about North Korean prisoners as if they're all just bad people who committed crimes ... when it's probably that many innocent people are imprisoned in North Korea as well. You can be put to jail or even executed for being in possession of Western objects like Western movies, etc. For the dudes in the videos to say that the food should be in itself punishment really shows their ignorance on the situation in North Korea, as well as just treating prison as a pure torture punishment without rehabilitation. I don't care about politics, we really shouldn't be trying to censor the realities of North Korea, and I don't even understand why you would. North Koreans aren't going to be watching this, so why even try to hide the realities and just say it for what it is? North Korean prisons are torture encampments and you're likely not to survive, as well as being imprisoned for very stupid or unfair reasons due to it being a communist dictatorship. Also, the North and South Korean dudes really talk a lot with each other, but kind of ignore the American dude. I understand they're just doing that because they can actually talk more comfortably with each other and have certain things that they can discuss in relation to their respective cultures, but still they should try to be mindful. I say this as a South Korean. Koreans love to just stick together, and end up ostracizing others, even if unintentionally.

    For someone who seems to be very knowledgeable about North Korea are you really asking this poor guy to speak up and maybe get killed. This is a real and true thing that can happen and being in south korean it would be very easy compared to him living in the US for example. Kim Jong-Nam hadn't been back in North Korea for 14 years and they assassinated him in an airport in Malaysia using a couple of unsuspecting women as scapegoats.

  • @lynnevetter

    @lynnevetter

    he also said that the prisoners are just skin and bone...he really went in on the realities. I don't think anyone was censoring anything. And for them, the things you described are "committing a crime" in NK.. so when he mentions committing a crime, he's just talking briefly. He is not trying to go into all the details, but does mention that other countries actually have human rights, whereas in NK doesn't. Maybe give another watch on his section, he does not go light on them, his tone is just pleasant.

    North Korean "prison" food is just average food, since the whole country is a prison. Also, I don't think this usual in US prisons...at least not before. I mean, there are several reports and biographies of nazi prisioners who said they ate better in US prisons and gained weight than they did while serving in the Wehrmacht. But who knows, things changed I guess? Meanwhile here in Brazil my dad always told me how grandma's restaurant had a contract with a prison once and a prisoner complained the bento, which was standard to what average costumers had, was "too hot" or "a bit salty" and it was enough to invalidate such contract. Since Brazil is run by criminals its no surprise they get VIP treatment.

I like my oatmeal with normal butter and sea salt, alternatively flax seed oil and sea salt. You can substitute the butter and the salt altogether for parmesan cheese. I know a guy who eats it every day but makes it sweet with butter, honey or syrup, cinnamon, vanilla.

    It is an interesting thing to think about: a Korean man could rape an immigrant worker, go to prison and eat quite well, without worrying about housing or cooking. But the victim would likely go back to their home, and struggle with food, likely skipping meals and eating mostly rice and bread. While having to cook their own food, pay for their housing and so on. It’s not as though Korea is responsible for the outcome of the victim, but it is just a sad, and unfortunate reality of life. A victim’s life could be worse than the “punishment” given to a rapist.

    Personally, I think the way prisoners are fed is cruel and unusual punishment. I mean, we don't have to feed them gourmet meals, but for pete's sake, at least make it as good as say, 80's high school cafeteria food.

    That phone call thing isn't true. My son was just in San Diego jail and he had unlimited free phone calls. Like as long as they were out of their cells they could make free calls. He'd call me over and over only stopping when another inmate needed to use the phone. What they're really making money from is the commissary. A pack of food like a gift pack for less than 10 bucks worth of food costs almost 30 bucks.

    They are being so dramatic. There was nothing wrong with the American prison food. But it looks more Britain, than American.
