I’ve owned horses my entire life and have been riding since I was two and I wear a helmet because it’s the smart thing to do. I forgot to one time and it was literally the one time my horses acted up and threw me off and I ended up having to go to the hospital for X-rays and got a concussion so it just shows that no matter how well trained your horse is they’re still animals and things happen so you should always wear a helmet and not make a mistake like I did luckily I was at least wearing a winter hat.

As someone who grew up without helmet habit...always wear one. All but one of my head hits have been with groundwork but I’ve fallen off once w/o helmet...no more risks.

Ehh, we did driving and work horses so were around the Amish a lot. They rarely wear shoes. And I still laugh remembering watching the farrier shoeing my 2000 lb draft horse with a foot bigger than his face comepletely barefoot. But I guess rhe driving world is different from riding. If there's an accident we know we dying lol.

I’m so glad my friends who don’t know much about horses listen to everything I tell them to do when I take them out on trail rides with me. I also give them a mini lesson on horses and how mine are trained if it’s their first time going out on a ride with me so both them and my horses stay safe.

I would so show up with tennis shoes on and my own helmet and ask if there's a box before beginner. Like I have fallen off every horse I have ever tried to ride. Then "when do we get to pet the horses?" Asking before doing anything because I don't want to get hurt

I joined a beach ride once. Had about 7 years of riding experience, but never a beach ride so I was super excited. Was warming up outside and there was this other lady who just kept letting her horse get on my horse's ass, which he wasn't thrilled about. So I asked her, please keep some distance, he's gonna kick at some point. And she just laughed it off saying "oh, don't worry, I've been doing this for a year I'm like so experienced, I know what I'm doing." So I rolled my eyes and just kept at it, trying to steer away here and there. Then we started making our way to the beach and I chose to ride in the back to avoid this problem again, so far so good. We finally get there, and we trot a bit before galloping along the shore and it's amazing. The wind, the sea, I loved it. Got a whole 2 minutes of galloping in and guess who starts screaming and falls off her horse? Yep, this 'super experienced' lady. She was in pain and we had to go back. Waste of time and money.

The only time I've done a beach ride was with my at the time pony, a ploddy gypsy cob. He was honestly the best pony I've ever had in my 22 years of riding. My current horse so far as been quite good, he's only backed end of last year though, he just turned 5 in March. So we will retire at the same time. 🤣 he'll be in his 30s and I'll be coming up for the 60s.

@Gi Gi LOL IKR? I've literally taken people off ponies and put them on bigger horses because I just had this inkling the pony is going to be a shithead. Funny when they realise how badly behaved some of them can be and they go pale. This is why I like my drafts.... even though I've had the pleasure of riding a very spirited Shire in the past (kinda scary when they decide to be a bit fresh), generally the bigger horses are more docile. It probably doesn't help that I'm from the UK and Welsh ponies/cobs are common and some tend to be rather high strung

It made me feel inferior because all the other kids were riding big graceful horses who did whatever they wanted while I looked like a fool trying to get little Fudge to follow my commands

@Gi Gi Yeah. I know way back arabian blood was introduced to the breed and it kinda stuck. I've not had good experiences with haflingers, but that's just a particular case and I don't see it as a breed representation. Percherons are amazing, they had a percheron x ID x Hanovarian that was just the best. Chill, but could do just as good as anyone else

That actually kind of rude, not everyone has the money for every colour horse

I done this but for kids. Had one Mom who thought her son would never be able to do anything like ride a horse because he was in leg braces. Helped that my horse was conditioned around screaming and flailing arms, and gun fire, so she didn't spook easy. One time I was leading my horse with a kid holding onto the saddle and told her not to kick her, because we weren't going to canter. My horse suddenly started shaking her head, I looked back and caught the kid kicking. Proud of my horse as she was aware of the kid being on her and didn't want to run with her on her. She had all sorts of disabled kids on her. She was perfect for kids. Adults though, she would give them a run for their money. She wouldn't slow down. Had to walk her in circles around the group just to pace her.

@Gi Gi I know! Glad I'm not the only one experiencing that type of a horse. The first time I started trail riding kids was when we moved. I caught one of the neighbor's kids in my pasture with my horse, barefoot. I mentally freaked out, but didn't physically freak out because I didn't want to spook my horse and trample the kid. But that kid apparently had been outside with my horse a good while, standing only up to her chest and barefoot and didn't even hurt her. I opted to let her ride my horse so she would stop coming into the pasture as things can happen with horses. It was walking her down our road when other kids came over to me wanting to ride her to. Because apparently adult+horse+kid = I can ride too. So I ended up having these weekly "appointments" for different kids and I would take my horse to their house and walk around in their front yard. One of them was partially disabled with leg braces.

I know a mare somewhat like that. She’s a wonderful therapy horse, super calm and patient, but the second someone who thought they were a good rider but really weren’t as good as they thought was on her back, she would throw her weight to the inside of the arena and drag them in, sometimes she’d just stop and start backing up, sometimes she’d even do a little rear. For more experienced riders though, she might give them a little test at the beginning where she’d experimentally come off the track but if the rider quickly corrected her she’d be an angel for the rest of the lesson. When I rode her as a younger child she used to constantly drag me to the inside and just fight me the whole time, but I rode different horses for a while and came back to her and now she doesn’t even test me and is one of my favorites to ride bareback because she’s so calm and sweet.

Yeah I volunteer at a therapeutic horsemanship center, and there is a mare there that is actually the lead mare and she is soooooo great with kids, but...I really don't like leading her because she thinks that she's the boss and can boss me around because she's the most dominant horse there. She can be a brat sometimes but she is a great therapy horse.

My daughter was given an old roping horse by someone who just didn't want to feed him anymore, and hadn't for quite a while, he was in bad shape. But she got him turned around and what a magnificent beast he was, unbelievably well trained. Turn on a dime and have five cents left. I loooooved that horse. Let a beginner near him? Not a chance. He was bought by someone who loved him as much as we did.

As a trail guide, the SECOND a guest says something along the lines of "Oh yeah I ride all the time! I grew up with horses!" I smile politely and nod while the voice in my head says "Yeah... I'm putting you on the easiest horse I have."

@@foxxgirl0715 Personally, it's pretty easy for me to tell if someone's actually experienced or just thinks that they are. In my experience usually the people like you who know what they're doing don't feel the need to constantly cut off the guides to tell them they know what they're doing!

Yep or when they ask for a fast horse and you immediately KNOW they are gona make the ride dangerous for everyone else and themselves so you pick out the horse that is dead to the legs unless you know how to squeeze him up the way a genuinely experienced rider would.

@@sheaburnett4872 Maybe it's just me, but whenever I go to a different place (not always but really often lol) I feel like I can't ride all of a sudden xD And I'm riding without any breaks for like 8-9 years :'D and it's pretty embarrassing xD Well, they can probably see that I know some stuff, but it does feel embarrassing when they put me on one of the easiest horse they have (as they usually do with new people they don't really know) and I have hard time with controling it when they misbehave :'D But then again - every horse is different and I think it takes a while before you get to know them, what they're doing and how to prevent them from doing stuff you don't want to...

Actually my mum did grow up with horses! We have photos of her aged five standing on her pony's back dressed as a cowgirl. Unfortunately they got sold when my grandad died and she didn't get to ride again until my sister and I were old enough to get a pony. Technically she could say she was experienced if she wanted to be an idiot and not mention that she hadn't ridden for 15 years!

So true. I met one exactly like this at a resort once. When they asked for level she of course called herself advanced. And she really wasnt cause she held her reins exactly like that. When we were done I was just hanging around when someone called my name. It was a woman I had met in competitions a couple of times and knew because I often came along as help. They were having a competition at the stable next door and she asked if I could help her cool down her horse as she had others to compete with. I barely had gotten on when this «expert« started berating me for lying, stating that it was so obvious I was a beginner. And that she should ride that horse. Even tried to grab the reins. The horse was starting to get spooked so I jumped off and clipped off one rein to avoid a tug of war with that poor horses bit. Of course then «experts« mom got involved demanding me to let her daughter ride the horse. So there I was trying to calm an increasingly scared horse while explaining that I couldnt let her because the horse owner had not given permission. Luckily someone alerted the owner who had to come back to stop a stranger trying to ride her horse..... the entitlement of some people.

@stinesfloy - Decades ago, while riding with a friend on green horses along a road, we had a car come to a screeching halt in front of us. The passenger jumped out and demanded that he be able to ride one of the Arabian horses we were mounted on. When I said no and explained they were in training, the guy said he was a trainer! Needless to say we continued on our way, going faster than the man on foot could keep up with and descending into a trail that was further from the road. It was so obvious that the man had absolutely NO inkling on training a horse and probably had never been on one. What horseman in his right mind would come screeching up in front of 2 riders, jump out of the car and DEMAND to be allowed to ride? None.

@@alycewich4472 really none. Lol. Reminds me about that one time I had a run in with miss entitled. I was left in charge of the stable where I had my horses for two days.One of the horseowners told me a woman would come to ride her horse and asked me to just point out her horse for her. So she came and I told her that it was the brown huge one out on pasture. Imossible to mistake as he was a draft mix breed and massive. I was doing a health check up on the yearlings in the hall so I was really buisy.(fun times. 5 barely handled yearlings. That took time as you can imagine) when I got out there stands Castor saddled up with no rider in sight in the parkinglot. Quick about Castor. One of the most beautiful horses I have ever seen. Arabian stallion, grey with mane like silver. Also really difficult to ride. Turns out miss entitled would rather ride the beautiful Castor instead of Sampson the draft horse. She ended up with a broken leg and banned from the stable. Who even does that...its not even basic horsemanship but basic common sense. (She also tried to pin it on me saying I pointed her to the wrong horse. Like really missy. Huge and brown isnt remotly like grey and arabian.)

I usually hide the fact that I used to ride cause I want the instructors to give me a beginner friendly horse on trial rides. I always get a difficult horse if people know I can ride.

My husband and I went on a trail ride on vacation just for the heck of it. We had horses and both spent our youth working at a hack stable so we were experienced but they didn't even ask. We were the only ones appropriately dressed...jeans and boots. We were the last ones mounted and they put me on a horse that had arrived, running, at the stable sans rider five minutes before the rest of the group. I rode him but it was a bit terrifying. He didn't respond to the reins very well. I was just a passenger, lol. The group was really long and at one point the guy behind me crowded up on my horse who kicked which caused his horse to shy and him to fall off. Suddenly there was a loose horse in the mix and you better believe I bailed off of mine. I caught the guy's horse, checked he wasn't hurt, checked the girth and helped him back on and while I was mounting my horse again the trail guide finally turned around and told me not to get off my horse! It made me appreciate what good care we took of our riders at the farm we worked at.

I have no problem saying that I know very little about horses and riding. I find the guide to usually be very kind, but I find I always end up on that horse that’s hungry or tired and just wants to go to the barn, or is bored and wants to run. I’ve been fortunate that I’ve been able to do okay with the horse, to the amusement of everyone. Honestly I wish I had grown up around horses. I believe everyone who has have been blessed to do so.

@Sarah Collins The guide was doing their job, for your and the horses sake. There are numerous ways to do everything, including dismount, some better than others. They've trained their horses in a certain way, and want to be sure people do things that way. Can you imagine how many self- proclaimed experts show up to ride, then do everything not just incorrectly but dangerously or painfully for the horse? You probably signed a waiver saying you'd follow all instructions... refusing to wait for them to explain was kinda rude. 😉 No shade meant, just a different perspective for you to consider.

@Sarah Collins Sure, that's exactly what I understood... the guide, who is in charge of the horses and riders welfare, asked you to wait for her to explain how she wanted you to do something. You refused and did it anyway. Whether you did it right or not isn't the issue, it's that you didn't follow the guides instructions, or even see what the big deal was or what could have gone wrong. She was probably quite relieved you didn't throw your leg over the horses neck or keep your foot in the stirrup on the way down or kick the horses rump while swinging your leg. Being the party in charge, we owe it to them to give them a minute to explain how they want things done on the horses and rides they're responsible for.

me who casually goes on trail rides on occasion and can confidently canter and jump: Trail master: "wanna trot?" me and my social anxiety: "Oh it's ok, only if you want"

I have anxiety and I’m saving up to BUY a horse and my anxiety makes it so I don’t even know how to ride a horse and I will have known the horse I want for 4 months on the first Saturday of April soooooooo yeah

The thing that always gets me, is people who think they have control over these animals. I haven't ridden in a hot minuet, but I remember learning at a very young age that you are privileged to ride these animals. And that you will respect them or they will remind you to do so.

went for a vacation trail ride , and they were asking what our riding experience was. The girl in front of me says " Oh, I'm an expert! I've been riding for 2 years!" They then ask me, and I say " Oh, I'm not that great, I mean, I've competed in the nationals, but never got higher than 5th, and totally failed to make the Olympic team." The look on the girl's face was priceless. (and yes, I have competed in nationals)

I was on holiday and going on a trail ride and my hubby's friend's wife asked if she could come along. I told her "Sure, have you ridden before?" "Oh yes!" She assured me. "Often". I rang to book and assured the lady we were both experienced. When we got there my companion suddenly was terrified to get on, even in a small pen and screamed in fear at any attempt to trot. I was very annoyed, feeling embarrassed that I had assured them this woman was experienced, when she obviously was not... Another time my son's friend's Dad wanted to come and ride one of my horses. He was formerly a race horse trainer, I was told. When he turned up I handed him a bridle and he didn't know what to do with it... I had to saddle and bridle the horse for him. It takes a horse about a minute to figure out how experienced you are and the horse gave him a hard time. She wouldn't move. He flapped the reins, trying to get her to go, but she laughed at him. I handed him a stick, to use as a crop, but he didn't use it, so I gave her a quick slap and she decided to behave and moved off. He was so terrified that I didn't go past a walk the whole time. You can lie your ass off about your level of experience, but your lies will be exposed in an instant, to both the horse and your trail ride leader.

@Sarah Collins We had a trail horse at the farm I used to work at that would be a jerk. He was gentle enough for everyone but he'd do things like walk off the trail into the bushes and just stop, lol. Nothing the inexperienced rider could do could get him back out onto the trail and going again. I'd have to keep getting off my horse to drag him out. Such a pain in the a**! I got so frustrated finally I rode him as my guide horse and was looking forward to straightening him out... nothing. He was perfect, lol. Ugh! His name was Bobby Sox. My husband and I still remember him all these years later.

@Sarah Collins - Back in the day when I was in-between horses of my own, I would go to the stable and ask for a beginner horse. Then I would make them listen the entire time. I enjoyed the challenge.

It's worth putting in the time and aggravation to eventually string together a group who are sensible and can manage themselves and their mounts !!! We had a very kool group of young moms (abt 8-12) and live in the mountains with lots to rough trails and fields..... We had SO MUCH FUN on school days with our group! NONE were the preverbal 'jerk' === only one small problem ownership 'pride' ..... but the group rides were well worth ignoring that pride !!!

Yesss it is so annoying when ur around other people who think they know everything but they don’t and then they say random stuff about horses that is not even involved with riding like “ a horse neighs when he’s happy” or “a horse needs have his hair brushed everyday” which they don’t unless your gonna be brushing their coat, and I am not lying was the most experienced in the group and also we weren’t in a trail ride we were just learning how to go in a slow gallop at my horse riding camp. I’m sick of beginners saying they are sooo experienced because they are not. Seriously guys don’t do this or u can get hurt if u try to canter and ur a beginner, u can get seriously hurt if u fall of at a canter so yeah.

Always listen to your trail guides, especially if they own the horses that you're going to be riding on/with. You might know your horses, but you don't know theirs.

😂 I remember when u did types of people at horse camp we need more of that and this!!!

The way she first picks up her reins!!! So true! I can’t tell you how many of my new students claim they’ve galloped before and then don’t even know how to trot. 🤣 And apparently “stallion” means it’s a black horse.... 🧐

@Caitlin Halliday - A BIG black horse that just so happened to be a 15.2hh mare in a group of 10-14hh ponies and horses.

The horses sticking their noses under the fence rail was so cute! They're obviously really friendly.

As a trail wrangler myself, I felt this in my soul. 100% true! 🤣 We mess with customers sometimes: here’s your horse, his name is Turbo. And here’s my wrangler horse, Fluffy Bunny:)

I think its sad that many people think that an older horse is not good enough. So many people have said to me that i shoulf get another younger horse, because mine would be to old. He is a 28 years old gelding but acts like a 10 years old youngster😂 nobody can stop him from doing what all the young horses are doing😁 and i love him for that😍

My all-time favorite horse was my Irish draught gelding who passed away at 36....he was 31 when we did our final fun show together

I used to ride until a super bad fall spooked me off for a number of years. Got to do a trail ride near the bay of fundy and it was amazing. Told them I had experience but it had been so long and the wrangler was super chill about it. Gave me a really steady horse, nothing phased this guy but he also wasn't slow. The ride was amazing we even galloped and having now done it on purpose vs on a terrified horse it was fantastic, you feel like your flying. I actually got back into riding again because of that ride and most importantly, that horse. dexter helped me get my confidence back, such a good boy.

What a great story. Nothing like a solid well trained and safe horse. Miss my favorite lesson horses.

I worked at a place in NZ that did trail rides. They asked people when they called to book what kind of riding have you done instead of asking how experienced they were. Then they had follow up questions based on their answers. Usually the experience level they gave them was pretty accurate. I always wonder why it is not done that way everywhere.

DId trail rides in NZ. REally a beginner then- leader of the group wen one direction- my horse took off for home- looked back and 4 other horses in pursuit- one rider fell off. Luckily no one got hurt.

When I was taking riding lessons there was a 15 year old girl and she started talking about how she had been riding since she was 5... Yeah she kept yanking on the horses face and didnt know what she was doing 😬😬😬 It was honestly embarrassing to watch

I have been riding since I was 5- just like this woman stated but I'll admit, I'm not advanced. The woman probably shouldn't have lied if I'm being honest!

I loved this, it reminded me of an equestrian vacation that I took and everyone was supposed to be "intermediate and above". I've had horses all my life and I still took lessons beforehand and there were people who took this ride who shouldn't have because they were definitely not intermediate. Also I'll tell people my level is advanced if there's a bigger group that has a lot of beginners so they don't end up with the more "spirited" one. I'm always respectful of what the guides say because I've been one before and they're familiar with their horses. I never try to do more with the beginners because I don't want to cause an incident. I'm really enjoying your videos! P.S. I loved the Michigan hat!

People actually do this and it’s annoying af. I’ve had a girl try to gallop when we had newbie riders and her taking off without us spooked one of the kids horses and I had to run down her horse while she was screaming and the girl just acted like she didn’t cause anything!😤

That must’ve been so annoying, at a hotel I stayed at they had daily trail rides, so I went every day, we chatted with the guide, and after the second day he let me trot (and I can’t remember if I was allowed to canter), but obviously I talked to him about what I could do and where. I was only 10 and was more self aware than this girl lol

I’m a tourist trail ride tour guide and this stuff happens all the time

I laughed my ass off. I remember taking a teenager I was working with to a trail ride. She said she was "really experienced". When she went to mount up, she tried to do it from the right side.

This sorta reminds me of an experience I had during a ponycamp. It was during lunch break, and some men had come in for a hack (trail ride) on the school horses. They were cursing and saying bad words in front of the other campers (I was twelve, i'm now thirteen, it was a beginner camp as I was giving my mare experiece and most of the kids were really young) and the instructor yelled at them. When they got into the arena to walk around before the hack, one of them was on our old draft called Duke. Duke was trying to poop, and the man was sitting instead of sranding to let him poop, so I made an offhand comment of "Why isnt he standing up for poor Duke?" So I got yelled at for 'bullying' newer riders by my instructor. Yeah.. That aged well.. Apparently on the hack they got angry when it was time to turn around because they wanted to gallop. They grabbed branches off the trees to use as whips and whipped the schoolies to get them to gallop, on TARMAC. The instructor (a different guy from the one that yelled at me) was on a horse that took off after them, and they didn't stop all the way into the yard, galloping through the livery yard and down a steep enough hill to the bottom yard. If the horse Infront (a pretty cob called PJ) hadn't slowed on the hill, he wouldve slipped on the descent. Needless to say, they were banned from riding at our yard, and the poor horses were given the day off to cool down and rest. It was awful, and I hate how I was scolded for 'bullying' riders that ended up abusing the horses.

My friend and I used to offer trail rides at our ranch in British Columbia. It was the most fun I ever had and the "job" that made me the most happy. We would sometimes get these kinds of people too. There was the flip flop lady. "No sorry, we definitely don't allow those even for walking around the ranch. " One of my favorite trail rides were two middle eastern men that said they were experienced riders and it turned out to be true. They rode two of our Arabian mares and we had a wonderful gallop. We also saw a bald eagle that day and it was one of the best rides I ever led.

I went on a trail ride on vaca but I had taken 4 months of riding lessons at that time, and I wasn’t experienced but I knew kinda what to do. They asked if anyone had taken lessons and I raised my hand. No one else did tho. The wangler said,” give her that horse, she’ll have fun with him 😏”. Turns out that horse was just young and full of energy. We reached a big field at the end and he bolted. I put him in a one rein stop and didn’t think anything of it bc I had done it all the time before. Then everyone was like woah, I was kinda embarrassed bc they were all talking and looking at me. My riding instructor was proud!

One rein stops don't always work. I was trying a horse for someone who wanted to buy it, and the horse took off. I pulled the horses head to my knee and the horse STILL ran straight ahead! Always have a backup plan. In this case it was advising them NOT to buy the horse. 😉

This is why I always say I'm a beginner so they'll give me a chill horse. Cus when I want to go on a trail ride i like taking it easy you know. Well...except for this one time when the horse I was given would not move at all, and when she did she was so slow I could have out-walked her without trying. So...maybe this is a split issue🤔 well...at least for me😂

It's one of those things when you are doing something and think it's casual like EVERYBODY knows how to do it but really it's super good and not everybody can do it- I had something like that but with a sitting trot. I had a riding lesson for my birthday on a Canadian (The breed) who was called Rolo. He was very sweet so no, I don't fall off in this story. I started trotting because that's what my instructor said to do and when I stopped so my mom could bring me my water bottle for a short break, she told me I did a very good sitting trot. When I did the trot, it felt casual because that's what I did at my old barn but apparently not. Keep in mind, I rode western for 5 years and this was my second time riding English. Something that also happened was he kept spiraling to the middle of the arena to where my instructor was. It was very funny but I must watch more riding videos now.

Thalia Rojas I have horses,but,I’m older and had a few crashes( not on MY horses) that has taken a lot of my confidence. When occasionally going to a trail barn I always say I’m a beginner + That way I usually get a calm,but,not asleep horse....

As a former wrangler / trail guide (20 yrs+) this was hysterical ...... SO 'true to form' ..... fortunately they're not all that 'consistent' = Thanks girls from this old trail guide.... loved it!

As a former trail guide in and around Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado, this is spot on! You need the guys who claim they can ride anything with hair on it and then they proceed to the right side of the horse, plus they're wearing cheap cowboy boots from Walmart. Those are the guys you put on a kid horse. 😂😂😂

My dressage instructor was telling me about how whenever she and her mother go on trail rides, they always claim they are beginner riders. Her mother is a grand prix dressage coach and she herself is about to start competing at junior grand prix dressage, but they know if they say they are advanced they’ll get put on some crazy six year old which they don’t feel like dealing with on a trail so they just say they’re beginner so they can get the slow bombproof ones. Apparently she once rode a horse that, even when the horse in front of him kicked him in the face, didn’t even react.

I went on a trail ride a couple years back, it was my first experience in horse riding lmao. My horse was amazing, she put up with my horrible balance and the horse in front of her wasnt the nicest but she just kept trucking.

I tell them I'm experienced but not brave! Last time they gave me a beautifully responsive mare who I'd have taken home in a heartbeat because I felt so safe on her and she gave me a lovely ride.

@@cyflym11 yes, I tell them I’ve ridden but am rusty (which is true) and usually get something nice. Sometimes there’s a bit of a test at the beginning “oh, wait, you aren’t going to let me run up the butt of the horse in front of us? Okay then” but nothing annoying the whole time. I’ve a couple times wished I was in a position to own a horse, the one I got was so nice.

If you were truely experienced, you would understand why they have those policies and respect them. I don't have any horses of my own, therefore trial riding is all I can get, so I'm going to respect their rules.

Yes. I ride at a barn but don’t have a horse but always assure that I will respect the policy no matter how advanced u are if u don’t respect policy’s they can kick u out or have u sit out.

When I worked on a dude string, the more advanced the rider told us they were the slower the horse we put them on. Worked like a charm.

One of my most memorable trail rides was a senior camp. Said I was a beginner-trot. They gave me a lovely mare- even though it was just walking- that horse knew my riding ability and was so happy to follow light rein, leg/seat cues. That was one of the days I realized my skills were better than I gave myself credit.

I've never gone on a trail ride before but that is one of my goals, I take this as a warning for what I might see if I do! Thanks! You have earned a new subscriber! A year later edit: I've gone on a few now and they are very fun! My coach does them thru a forest on her property and it's always the best! Still subscribed

Loved this! It brings back a lot of memories too 🤣 I’m not sure if anyone else can relate, but whenever I go on trail rides and tell them that I do have experience around horses, they never really believe me. I mean I understand that it’s probably for liability reasons, but it’s just kind of frustrating when they give the more difficult horses to the adults just because they’re older. One time I did ride a younger horse with a bit more spunk who wanted to trot and I was perfectly okay with that because the horse I lease is very hotheaded so I’m used to it. I just wish there was a way I could convince them that it’s true that I’ve been riding for 10 years, and that I’m not lying about it.

I feel for you. I think I was about 14, and this was in 1964, when my Scout troop went camping in the Smokies. One day we took a trail ride to the top of some mountain. The owner/wrangler had a rule that we had to hold our reins no closer than the knot tied at the end, which left the reins very slack. Which was all well and good, but my horse insisted on crowding the horse in front of bim, and there was not a thing I could do to make him go more slowly or stay back. I was trained to ride western, where the horse is off the it most of the time, but a little pressure on the curb is the brake. I had been riding for four years by that time in a mounted drill team that did parades and close order drills on the fairgrounds afterwards. Kind of like the Walmart version of the Spanish Riding school. I was not going to yank on my poor horse's mouth if I had been allowed to use the reins, but I obeyed his rules. The ride was not as pleasant as I eould have liked because of the crowding of the horse in ftont of me snd my lack of control. And then when we got back down to the stable, the guy dtessed me down for rudely crowding the horse in front of me. I'm almost 72 npw, still own horses and ride from time to time, and that still rankles me. I get it. Your business, your horse, your rules. If the stable requires a helmet and heeled shoes, I will comply. I wondered about the mounting block. Are people today so unfit that they will hurt a horse while getting on? I got on my horses from the ground most of my life, until we adopted our most recent horse after about fifteen years of not having one that was fit to be ridden, and I realized my muscles weren't twenty years old anymore. Other than that, being back in the saddle felt like yesterday.

I remember situations like this when I was a trail guide. Often, people would claim to be experienced, and want to galop on the beach. So I would ask: "Have you ever galoped outside of an arena?" Most had not, so I would only let them trot. It is about safety, both for them, the other people on the ride, and for the next people to ride that horse. They should not learn bad behavior. The worst is people who insist on riding exactly like they do at home (kicking, tight reins etc.), ignoring our rules, confusing the horse. And people who think it is okay to race past everyone else, and get mad at the guide for telling them to stay in line... Some people just don't think about the fact that trailhorses are amazing workers, who constantly learn, and needs to be protected by the stables rules, in order to be able to do their job safely, comfortably, for years. Those horses are champions!

This hits so close to home... I use to take tourist out on rides and it was like nails down a chalk board. Especially the kids, there was this one time where it was just me and 3 other teenage girls. One was a novice rider and the other 2 tourists but their grandma was the thorn in my side. She kept saying she knew the yard owner and blah blah blah...and while I was busy mounting I asked them to walk around the arena within full view of me the grandma told them to trot even after I told them not to because of the novice rider. When I told them to stop, this lady was like 'well I know the owner and she lets us do this and that and blah blah blah'. I looked at her and turned to the two girls and told them, either they listen to me or this ride is going on but without them. The grandma lady went full surprised Pikachu.

Girls! You nailed that one on the head! Even when people just show up for riding lessons and tell me they’re super experienced and they to the craziest stuff. And I’ve gone a lot of places trail riding, and I watch all these people get into the advanced group and it’s clear that the closest I’ve been to a horse is watching a John Wayne movie on TV or the ponies tied to the walkers at the fair. Personally I lie when I go on trail rides and tell them I knew a lot less than I do, because I discovered if you really do know something they might give you the horses that their training to be good trail horses. LOL.

In Soweto I actually did want to ride the guide's horse. He was riding a very spicy mare and she had a lot of "go" (also bunnyhopped because she was eager to go faster), and I was very used to my pony who is also a very spicy mare. He wasn't sure whether I was experienced enough for his horse, so he tested me the African way I guess haha. He said: "let's gooooo"... He bolted off and I galopped right behind in. It was awesome. He looked behind him to check if I wasn't panicking or had fallen off. When we stopped he said "yeah, you can ride! So you can ride my horse!". So he jumped off and handed me the horse. Mind you, this was 19 years ago. I was a wild girl lol. I loved every minute of that hack. We encountered some baboons as well as zebras and a few giraffes. That mare made my day lol

Mounting blocks/steps are easier for you and the Horse. (easier to mount up especially when you are 4'9" or shorter. it also depends on how tall the horse is too)

Lmao I love this skit! I went on my first trail ride a month ago and I only ride english. I know nothing about western and it’s was quite awkward. I held the everything wrong. @Keira Buckley I know a girl like that. It’s not even her horse, but she talks to him and once I was bathing him and she just walked over and started to jump around him and obviously he got nervous. I told her to stop bc I was washing his legs and could get kicked 🙄. That’s not even half the story LOL

Fun fact: I was that one stubborn rider kid that would keep doing whatever I needed to do even when I was in pain. (For example, I fell of a horse while trail riding and got back on and just trotted along with the others even though my back was just screaming in pain-)

@(Hollow) - Then you would absolutely enjoy either Endurance riding or Competitive Trail Riding. A lot of the riders have been seriously hurt at one time or another, but you just climb back on and continue riding until you get back to camp.

My Dad who started me riding at 6 told me if his horses rode off a mountain top, I better be the cowgirl in that saddle. Nobody wanted to ride his horses after that.😂 HE MEANT IT! Broke my neck one time and first thing he did was check on his Stallion. Lectured me in the ambulance ride about it was always MY FAULT (99% of the time it was ). Once my Mom got to the hospital he went back to get the vet to check his boy. I learned to respect horses no matter how harsh this seems. I'm now 57 and still ride horses.❤

"oh yeah I've ridden horses for ages, I'm a really good rider and they just love me" *proceeds to pat horse on the forehead like dribbling a basketball, walks far too close behind them, yanks on reins when the horse doesn't do what they want and agressivly whips reins up and down to get them to move forward / go faster like they've seen in movies and video games* I have seen all of these things happen and every time I want nothing more than to drag them off whatever poor pony or horse they have been given to ride and not let them back till they learn to respect the animal they are riding, I hate the way riding is portrayed in media for these reasons

Ahhh yessss. I'm a trail guide on the weekends (in the warmer seasons anyway!) and this is just... yep. We got a few regulars who are... exactly like this.

Hahaha..!! Priceless! Remember one time when I as an exchange student visited a trail ride company in Calgary, Canada to do a 6 hour trail ride (yes...with breaks). Me and my other european friend was the only ones in the group that was considered "experienced" , while everyone else in the trail group were actual beginners. And guess who was the only one who used a helmet. Well....meeeee..!! Would never go without if I didn't know the horse 100%. I also rode the smallest horse (would be considered a pony) and was VERY happy with the little 5 year old quarter horse I got to ride. Everyone else laughed as "the most experienced rider got the smallest horse"...since people often seem to think that size matters..."bigger the better". But I was super happy with what I got. xD Me and my friend also went back to the ranch a few months later to do a snow ride. And since we happen to be the only riders that day the wrangler took us on a super fun ride - galloping across fields of snow and swishing through the canadian forest in powder snow. Definitely created a great memory that day.

Funny vid, very accurate. I was on a trail ride years ago in Mallorca. It was the gallop speed (they had 3 rides, walking, trotting or galloping for advanced riders) and there was me (UK female 20s), the rancher and a German man 40s ish. We were told to follow the rancher single file, leaving a count of 5 before setting off after the horse in front (order was rancher, German, me). We'd just started galloping across the field when the German kicked his horse on, going around the rancher in a sweeping turn. The rancher set off after him and I wasn't sure who to follow, stick behind the German or go "open reign" and move to behind the rancher. I followed the rancher's path as he caught up and grabbed the German's reins to slow the horse. The German complained about being stopped! The rancher was NOT impressed and we walked back the rest of the way. I've never understood why people don't listen to the owners/stable hands and follow their rules...they know the horses and they don't want their animals being hurt by idiots who think they're a bloomin' cowboy!

Yeah. Its definitely different in the UK. You're required to wear a helmet until age 15 then its upto you, as majority of people here value their brains remaining inside their skull, most wear helmets. Our horses from what I've seen are a little more "quirky" than the American trail horses. They will litterely freak out if a blade of grass looks at them the wrong way.
