This is actually pretty cool to see! I think it's kinda normal to learn multiple languages in the Netherlands, because unless you are from the Netherlands, almost no one understands Dutch. Most Dutch people understand German, but Germans do not understand us. I remember learning English, German and French in High School and sometimes you get the opportunity to learn Spanish as well. For me i speak Dutch, English, German and i'm currently learning Swedish & Japanese.

Hottake if you ask me. Before I started to learn Dutch, I was already able to understand it quite well. That is because I was born around two hours from the Dutch border. Let's say you are in Austria, Bavaria or Berlin - I don't think you'll be able to understand them well.

I live like 30mins from venlo (within germany and our dialect makes it pretty easy to understand dutch :) ♥ and i love dutch ppl. They're just the best

Lovely video! In high school, we had Dutch, English, German, French, Latin and classical Greek. And for fun I took studies in Spanish, Russian and Japanese. I tried Arabic on duolingo, but I just can't connect it to anything I've heard before, so it's hard to integrate.

Yeah it's actually pretty crazy. In my third year I did those 6 languages, but at a certain point you have so many languages that it is really hard to learn one properly. I did French a total of 6 years, but after that I can't really speak it.

@@TiaMat99 Only in Grammar school (The Gymnasium) you have Latin and Classical Greek, but the other levels of the high school education you have only Dutch, English, German and sometime French.

I’m from Bonaire and there by age 12 most kids can understand and speak 4 languages (Papiamentu, Dutch, English and Spanish). Since moving to the Netherlands I’ve learned Brazilian Portuguese (because I had a Brazilian colleague) and some basic German words and phrases. So I can speak and understand five and a half languages now. Hoping to learn some Turkish soon.

I got to do a honourable mention for my brother and his love :D They live together here in The Netherlands. He was born here, she was born in Latvia, He speaks 7 languages (Dutch, English and can hold conversations in German, French, Spanish, Italian and Latvian). She speaks 7 languages (English, Lavtian, Dutch, Russian and can hold conversations in German, Italian and French). Like whut. They travel a lot all through Europe ^^ Also, I love the positive vibe of your vids ^^

I'm Dutch born and raised in the Northern province of Friesland, now without bragging I speak: Frisian, Dutch, English and German fluently. My French and Spanish are good enough to not starve in those countries. I can read Danish and Norwegian and some Russian. Oh and speak some Portuguese as well.

I'm a Dutchie, but I've travelled now for almost 50 years all around the globe. During travelling, private and for my profession (international service engineer and tour guide all destinations), I've learned to speak many local languages. I had to, otherwise there was no cummunication possible with the locals. Languages I'll speak are Dutch, English, German, French, (Latin-American) Spanish, Portuguese/Brasilieiro, Swedish, Polish, Russian, Greek, Turkish, Arabic, Farsi, Afrikaans, Sotho, Hausa, Swahili, Bahasa Indonesia/Malaysia, Japanese, Korean, Chinese (Cantonese/Mandarin), Hindi/Urdu, Nepali, Thai and Vietnamese. It's very convenient if you can understand a lot of people.

Wow!!! You definitely win the language award haha How do you manage to not get confused when switching languages? I find often that since I don't use Spanish much often anymore, whenever I start to speak it, I'm always mixing in Dutch words on accident, because my brain automatically thinks about Dutch when thinking about a second language.

​@@exploringtheforeign I don't speak that many languages Only English and dutch (currently learning Swedish) but a thing that is difficult for me is switching between the languages. When I'm watching an English video on KZread and I get a dutch ad the first 2 seconds sound like a weird language for me xD But I do think that this is something that happens more often if I'm doing a lot of English stuff in a row. (Because a lot of the things I do at home are English etc I speak/listen about half the day English and half the day dutch so that could also be a reason. Im from the netherlands btw)

I speak Sarnami (dialect of Hindi and is my mothertonque), Dutch, Sranan (a language that originated in Surinam and is recognized as an official language in addition to Dutch), English and Hindi. I learned English in school and by watching movies in which English is spoken and the same goes for Hindi. I also learned German and Spanish in school, but I don't speak them.

The more languages you speak, the easy'er it gets to understand other languages. I speak Dutch, German and English... but it helps me to better understand Swedish and Dänish too. And I speak a little tourist French & Italian,.

I definitely agree! Even with the little Dutch I've learned, I found myself understanding quite a bit in Germany, and same with Spanish, I was able to understand a bit in Portugal and Italy!

I agree. Especially if you speak a language from a certain language group, like French: then it's easier to understand/learn to speak Spanish, Italian, Romanian, Portuguese. If you speak a Scandinavian language, like Norwegian, you can easily learn Swedish, Danish or Icelandic. And Germanic language: if you speak Dutch, it's easier to learn German, English, Frisian.

I just came across your channel. I am Dutch. I speak four languages ; Dutch of course, English (fluently) , French(almost fluently) and German (I can manage). I don’t know since how long, but KZread has an automatic translation in the settings for the subtitles. You can pick any language you like. I just started my own KZread channel and luckily somebody explained that to me, so I don’t have to make double videos LOL my compliments on your Dutch by the way.

I really also recommend traveling to the northern of the netherlands, like to the province Groningen or Friesland (where i live :) i think you’ll get lots of interesting answers since a lot of the habitants there are all mostly all dutch, so you’ll rarely find foreigners there, which also gets you a complete answer of what dutchies really think nowadays and what is going on in our small world :) if your looking for a place to go in Friesland, i would definitely say either Leeuwarden or Heerenveen, big recommendations!!!

As a Dutch person I really enjoy watching your videos! As for this specific video, almost every Dutch person speaks at least English. We are taught English in school starting at a young age and it’s a mandatory subject for our exams. We’re often also expected to pick a second language which is either German or French in most cases, because neighbor countries. Other than that, the Netherlands is a business country specialized in trading with other countries. So it’s considered important for us to speak multiple languages, which I think is really cool. Also, as you noticed, the amount of tourism and immigrated cultures we have are also very diverse. So again, learning multiple languages is great!! I myself speak English almost better than my native language haha. I also was taught German in school. I know Swedish from when i grew up there as a child and currently learning Spanish because why not

But our street slang is basically a melting pot of all different ethnic languages combined. so most youth speak or understand street slang understand words of Moroccan, Surinamese, Antilles, Moluccan / Indonesian, Turkish, different African etc. due to all those languages being present in the street slang. would love to see you do some more of this language checks at different times when youre traveling the country just ask 4 to 5 people it would be so interesting! love the content. zie je snel weer op de tube! haha

It's actually quite funny to see where your language learning process may take you. I'm living in Spain where I am teaching German, English and Spanish As A Foreign Language. On a private level I've been learning Dutch for about two or three years now and pretty much auto-didactically. Ik ben nu begonen met een belge op beginers niveau en zij spreek niet zo goed andere talen. Het is de eerste keer dat ik nu de theoretische verklaringen op nederlands geef. Het is een groot uitdaging. Mijn nederlands is nog niet zu vloiend.

Im a dutch student, right now in my second year bachelor, In highschool we had te learn english french and german. Because of this I started to speak english fluently when I was 16 at this time I also dropped French and German this makes it that I only understand it a little, as of right now I am studying Spanish and Chinese for my study marketing & sales. This goes to show that you just have a lot of languages you can learn in the Netherlands, probably a big reason why inhabitants speak multiple languages.

In the province limburg in the south of the Netherlands everyone speaks at least 3 languages but 4 or 5 is even very common. Take me for example. I grew up in maastricht what is just a 20 min car ride away from Germany and the French speaking part of Belgium, so I basically grew up with those foreign languages. Aditional to that everyone in the Netherlands speaks comfortably English as we are teach in school from a young age. + Dutch as a native language ofcourse and a local dialect. On top of that I'm getting into Spanish lately so I guess I speak 5,5 languages

Ohh leuk, ich bin van Belsj Eisden (Maasmechelen)! 😁 Eigenlijk is Limburgs bij jullie een erkende taal, en op linguïstisch vlak tikt het ieder vakje aan dat het apart genoeg maakt om een taal genoemd te kunnen worden ipv een dialect, zowel qua woordenschat, grammatica en het feit dat het in het Germaans de enige uitzondering is waar tonaliteit een grote rol speelt (zoals in het Mandarijns) dus eigenlijk mag je best wel zeggen dat je de Limburgse taal ook beheerst! 😁 En als we met z'n allen wat meer eensgezind hier achter staan en het in leven houden door het aan de volgende generaties door te geven, dan komt er uiteindelijk misschien ooit wel de erkenning die het verdient zoals de Friesen dat hebben! 😊

Learning new languages is fun and it's a great way to honor the people and make new friends. I'm learning Patois at the moment. Next up is Spanish. I'd also like to learn some African like Wolof maybe. Definitely Arabic, but that's an end goal. Wish i could just download it into my brain, but it's hard work. Good job on your Dutch btw. That English man's Dutch was very smooth also. Dutch must be very hard to learn.

Good luck with learning those!🙌🏾 and thank you for the compliments on my Dutch! It's not that hard to learn basic conversation, but past that is more difficult.

With a little effort you could have found in Haarlen, Moroccan and Italian, Ivriet and Papiamentu. There are many that speak those languages. To find a Moroccan speaking person, you go to a telephone repair shop. To find an Italian speaking person you go to an Ice-cream parlour. Ivriet you find in the nearest shul. And to listen to Papiamentu you go to the Sociale Dienst in Haarlen.

Het was heel interessant om te kijken. Ik zou graag een beetje door de land reizen en de taal oefenen. Ik ben een duitser en leef in Spanje en spreek natuurlijk duits, engels,spaans, frans, valencians ( dialect van catalans ) en een beetje nederlands.

4:23 well it wasn't really selling, it was taken over by force by the British, but during the treaty of Westminster it was established that the Dutch would give up on New York and the British would give up on Surinam, which was a colony established by the Dutch after taking over a British fort

When I was 11, we learned Dutch, English, French, Latin and Classical Greek, and when I was 12 I learned German (all in school btw) and on Duolingo I learned Italian and a little bit of Spanish and Chinese. And like 3 words of Esperanto.

As expected most speak 2. I'm fluent in Dutch and English, used to know a lot of German as a child but lost it, now I only understand a lot of it but I cannot really speak it. Trying to learn Korean and Japanese and I'm absolute beginner at those. In the future I plan to learn Spanish too.

Great video again! My daughter is 19 years old and reads a lot. From the age of 10 or 11 she started to read books in English. Now there is not one book in Dutch on her shelf. Only English books, except books for study ofcourse. She speaks English fluently. I can speak 3 languages. Dutch, English and German. And very little Polish. I know some words and some of them not so nice :-)

You would not believe it Sam, but it all started with… Harry Potter. I always play the original version of movies with Dutch subtitles and not the synced version. Original is not only better quality, but also they are confronted with English language at a very young age and learn to read Dutch faster cause of subtitles. After she saw the movies, she wanted the books of Harry Potter. You guessed it, only in English. Now she buys all her books in English 👍🏻. I read an article this year that a lot of young people do the same. She is not the only one.

I like your video :D Since everyone else is talking about what languages they know i thought i would do the same: My father is Italian, my mother is Dutch, i have lived in Italy, the Netherlands and Switzerland. Italian, Dutch and English i know fluently if you ignore the occasional small mistake and weird pronounciation. I know a little bit of French and can sometimes understand a little bit of German and Spanish but can’t speak it.

Spanish might not be as regular or popular in my hometown Haarlem, maybe it has to do with 1572/73 (LOL). Shout out to Frankie !!! RAW speaks 3+ languages: Dutch, English, German with confidence, enough French to survive. Added multiple, single words in other foreign languages (mostly greeting, food, drink, thanking).

My family ruled the Netherlands under the Spanish crown and then went to New York after that.

I am Dutch and I speak Dutch (obviously) fluently as well as English (C2), I can fully understand German and read/write in German (B2/C1) pretty well and I speak it at an intermediate level. I speak and understand basic Spanish (A3) and a little bit of French (A1). Currently I am learning Korean which I now speak, read and write at a basic (A1) level. If I were to include all that would be 6 languages that I speak or understand more or less.

I speak Dutch, English and bit of German. I also can understand most of Frisian and Afrikaans. Also I can understand (read) small bits of Swedish, Danish and Norwegian. Currently I try to learn Czech, although that's not going to well 😅

Yeah, I am really surprised that you are....See to us it is a necessity to learn foreign languages to go around, since not many people control the Dutch language. And since the Dutch are used to travel the world for business purposes and holiday purposes of course, we really do not have any choice. Even at young ages we get the very basics of at least 3 languages at school: German, French and English. So one gets at least the very basic as an introduction to 3 languages. Later on one can drop languages as subjects and choose different subjects which suit one better. Not everybody is language orientated after all. Only the English language can not be dropped as a subject since it is obligatory, just as the Dutch language is and Math is at most school levels in the Netherlands. Although English is taught to us all, most of us never ever will use it and like anything you are taught and barely ever use...you'll forget how to use it in the first place. Therefor our English in general is not that well, but we can have basic conversations. We stay a bit uncomfortable in English since we do not know exactly how to express ourselves in this foreign language to us, which we in general hardly ever use, since we all speak Dutch to each other. Of course exceptions will be there of Dutch people who do know the English language more than average, but these are absolutely the exceptions within our society I'd say. So just to make this clear: please do not make the mistake to think that we all speak English like we speak Dutch, we just don't. Dutch really is the language one needs here to go around in The Netherlands.

As a dutchman, I Learned English, German and French at school granted my French is ackward, can understand it alot better as speaking it. But i live in a very multicultural neighbourhood of Amsterdam, and picked up over the years a bit Turkish, Spanish and even some Italian from neighbours who spoke mostly their native tongue while learning dutch.. So not fluently in those languages, nor fully understand everything, specially Turkish is reasonbly hard for me.. But yeah, you are right, due the very multicultured nature of The Netherlands, many languages spoken in Europe, just to be able at least on some basic level in other languages is just normal here, and with 2 or 3 languages, you proberbly can cover any language barrier in whole of europe, specially if you can speak English, German or Frensch

Wat leuk .. my native tongue is English, pero hablo un poco Espanol tambien, et een peu Francais aussi, verstehe ein wenig (Austrian: grüß gott) Deutsch, και Έλληνας επίσης.. ο άντρας μου ήταν Έλληνας. Every Dutch person speaks more than just two languages too if they travel at all .. maybe not fluently, but well enough to 'get into Dutch' with. I should start my own channel and call it 'Getting Into Dutch, in Dutch' .. 🤣

I'm Dutch as well and I speak 6 languages. Dutch, English, German, French, a little bit of japanese and a little bit of malaysian.

Most people in the Netherlands speak Dutch or Englis or both and Dutch and we have 3 other lenguages and in that regions the people speak it as mother tongue and not dutch but we speak dutch. In school we learn Dutch, English, German and French. But older people speak better German and mostly more around the German border. With my mother tongue when I visit Germany and I live near the border I can speak in my own mother lenguage and they understand and we understand them.

I speak Enlish very well, nicht so schnell, moar da komp nog wel!! On a more srious note: I speak read and write English and Dutch fluently, I understand German in sound and reading, speaking and writing is less fluent. I know a little bit of Latin, Spanish and French. but not enough to speak or write it with confidence.

IK am English , and we are supposed to be very bad at learning other language. However I speak English, German and French. My university Degree was in Ancient Greek and Latin . I can read place names and street names in modern Greek and can read the equivalent of the Daily Mirror. I have problems with the spoken modern Greek as it contains a lot of Turkish loan words.

I like those cars in the Netherlands, USA type of style

A shame you didn't meet someone who also speak Frisian. As Frisian is also a language in the Netherlands mostly spoken in the province Fryslan.

By the way. I speak Dutch, English and German and understand Spanish a little bit ;-)

Of all the subjects one learns in high school, I can honestly say, that most are a total waste of time, since you will never ever use it again. But languages have proven to be very useful. And of course history is important to avoid repeating it.

Languages are a Dutch hobby! My ex wife spoke five and my drinking buddies all speak three. One of them speaks six.

Americans have the luxury of English being a commonly used international language. If Dutch for whatever reason was one of the major international languages being spoken us Dutchies would also get complacent and not feel the need to learn more languages. Funnily enough, in a different way but still similarly us Dutchies learn German & French precisely because those two countries are (or rather; used to be) known for not speaking English and only speaking their native languages. Hence why the Dutchies took it upon themselves to learn those two languages. Also because they're our border countries, similar to how Americans are taught Spanish as well.
