Pentax ME Super vs Pentax MX

Re-asking the age old question: which of these compact Pentax 35mm SLR's is the best?
The Pentax ME Super is a Swiss army knife of function and options while the MX is more of a singular scalpel with refined features and robust mechanical construction. There is no one right answer but hopefully you can appreciate my perspective and I would love to hear yours in the comments below!

The MX has been my baby since I inherited one from my old man in '94. I took it all over the world and finally got the 40mm f2.8 just before the pandemic. And then it's been sitting. I'm hoping to get the light meter fixed so that I can shoot it how I remember using it when travelling a lot. Not only is that 'hollow feeling' a part of it being so lightweight, but it's super compact - but with that _huge_ viewfinder. The ME Super is a great camera but, coming from the other direction, it felt heavy in a way that made it seem less pleasing to pick up and go than the MX.

Alternatives to the MX listed descending price wise: Nikon FM (Nikon F), Ricoh KR-5 Supper II (Pentax k), Chinon CM4s (Pentax k)/ Revue SC 3 (Pentax k). Al having the nice feature of a mechanical shutter so batteries is only needed for the meter. I have them all along the MX and the primary reason for getting mechanical shutters is 1) They can outlast my lifetime 2) prices are low comparable to electronic shutters since the lack of automatic exposure and lower max shutter speeds, but who cares 😉

Both cameras are too small for my hands, but the ME Super is a ton of fun. Pentax packed the perfect amount of functionality into that tiny body. I find the KX far more comfortable. The ME Super was the first camera I ever serviced myself. Rather simple on the inside if you don't get intimidated by the wiring. Nothing a good soldering iron with a blade tip can't handle. Unfortunate that they used a rubber material that falls apart over time for the mirror damper. Have to yank out the whole mirror box to fix it properly. I've still got a few MX's in my "collection" that have the same issue making me leery of selling them. Flash circuit K/O (Both serviced by Eric on top of that, heh). Need to take them apart and continuity test the circuit.

My Grandfather handed me down the MX. I have one in silver and black. What I am most grateful for is that I got exposed to the glass that Pentax made. The tiny M series and the Takumar series. I would say the MX is a post apocalyptic camera of choice. SOLID and beautiful to use in a wide range of rugged environments. The ME is a great entry for new photographers. I am grateful that they took on Olympus for a pocketable (Pockets were bigger back then) body. I would love to show you my custom painted MX in black. The pancake lens and 28mm f2.8 can be brought on nice long walks. Loving this video! A fellow Pentax enthusiast. I also love that I can slot my Grandfather's M series lenses onto my Pentax K1 Mark 2!

I have the MX and sold my ME super to buy an ME F with the auto focus lens. The camera and lens are in great condition but sadly the mirror locked up and now just sits on the shelf ☹

I had the MX with winder back in the '70s when I was in the military. Eventually wore it out beyond repair supposedly according to the repair guy, probably due to the extra wear that the winder puts on the camera cuz I shot through a bunch of film back in the day. I now have a ZX5 but I haven't really used it much because I've gone to digital when don't really spend too much time with film these days. But I really liked my MX.

I bought a mint black MX last month from the original owner with the 50mm 1.4 and 28mm 2.8 M lenses. It's a beautiful camera, and the compact size makes it feel more refined than something more 'professional'. It's rarely mentioned, but the K mount was designed with m42 compatibility in mind, meaning there's a slew of fantastic, cheap, characterful lenses from Takumar and Carl Zeiss that will work as intended on K mount bodies.

Excellent presentation: Two totally fantabulous cameras ❤ I have both - I prefer the MX always but two camera buddies prefer the Super. I also have fun with an ME SE (with diagonal focusing screen which adore) albeit occasionally. I'd love to swap the focusing screens between the ME SE and the MX -

Just love my MX, as it's so back to basics and I really enjoy the process involved while using it. Let's me slow down and appreciate the foto The other I use is my Pentax Super A, that is another kind of foto taking experience where I can play with different auto options. It has its place.

I'm just getting into camera repair and your channel helps out a lot!! Not having fun with a completely dead Canon A-1 though 😂not a fan of the flex circuits, a complete disassemblly is required to clean those bad boys and some of the switch contact wires are incredibly tiny. I just ordered a Pentax MX to work on and can't wait to see her guts. Do you have any videos for MX light meter repair? Not that it's needed for the armature firing, but it would still be nice to restore

Thanks. While the MX did succeed the KX, however, the K2 was the flagship model of the original K- mount trio. Entry level KM, then KX with more user functions including the aperture window, DOF preview and mirror lock-up. The K2 was a very different platform vertical run (Seiko?) metal shutter, greatershutter speed range and flash sync. Not to mention the flange mounted selectors for ASA/ ISO, shutter speed and exposure compensation. These were appropriate to more serious photographers. It was significantly more expensive We KX owners would either compensate directly via shutter or aperture variations for individual shots or by adjusting the ASA/ISO to achieve exposure compensation in a particular situation. Personally, I thought that the K2s "bells & whistles" made it more difficult to first imagine, then evaluate and then quickly adapt the settings to (hopefully) capture the image. My friend and I reordered: he the K2 with 50/1.2, and I the KX &50/1.4. Loved the KX and the M42 adapter!!!!

I have a MX with the winder, and a ME Super. I like both so far, not sure which I prefer more, I like the aperture view on the MX. I have a Program Plus but I've never actually used it, the displays in the view finder put me off it so far 😅😅 I have an ME too but I stole parts from it to repair the ME Super so never really shot with it.

I prefer my grandpa's ME Super that I repaired, whereas the MX that I picked up later on was jammed to the point of the internals being unrecognizable compared to service manuals

The main difference is that MX is always functional by default. And ME/super is always stuck. I have a full box with ME now for repair.

That's misleading. I have 3 Mes and they work flawlessly. They are as reliable as any other well regarded SLR.

@@karmazynowy_7 thank you for your observation. You may be right. I checked my storage box: 1xME-F, 3xME, 4xMEsuper, 3xP30, 2xP50, 4xSuperA. All are not functional. Maybe it just so happens that I was buying lots on ebay for the lenses. Maybe I don't like to solder wires, and there are a lot of them. So I haven't seen a working Pentax with a vertical shutter.

You're comparing apples to oranges. The MX was an all-manual model aimed at the advanced amateur/professional market, its depth-of-field preview, interchangeable screens, and motor-drive capability, placed it several notches above the strictly amateur ME Super. The MG was pretty much Pentax saying, "Oopsie," and bringing back the ME, the MV and MV1 don't dignify an opinion.
