Thanks for the thoughtful video, glad to see some Z love out there. Let me please add 3 hugely important aspects of the camera that you just barely touched on indirectly. First, the Z is iso invariant, and so can be shot at base iso and then lifted in post---and here we're talking easily about several stops of underexposure, up to 5 in a pinch. Second, and in my opinion the most significant thing about the files, is their general malleability in post. This I think is the biggest and most easily definable advantage to having a medium format camera. There is a "suave" quality to the images---you touched on this with your observation about the transitions from in to out of focus areas--- in contrast to a more "brittle" look of FF. I think it also points to medium format handling tonalities better. This is a subtle difference, and may be meaningless to certain shooters. For me, it's a very big deal in everything I shoot. Third is that while the new lenses are pricey---so are Fuji's, btw---unlike Fuji there are thousands of 645 and 6x7 Pentax lenses out there on the used market. Oh, and yes, the 6x7 lenses can be used with the Z via a Pentax adapter, and both the 6x7 and 645 lenses can be used on other K mount Pentax bodies via a Pentax K mount adapter. No other manufacturer offers this capability, and only Leica has apsc, FF and medium format covered in digital. I have been using my Z since May of 2014---got one of the first ones available on the east coast of the U.S. Personally I do use it for travel (!--no pain, no gain.), and for my own art practice. But professionally I use it for cultural heritage/fine arts repro photography for museums in the mid-Atlantic region. It's just a fabulous system.

Ah yes! Forgot about the 6x7 lenses as I actually had a few with the adapter but sold it. Definitely flexible and for those who’ve been shooting medium format film would be at home with this system. Your insights are spot on hope people will see this too if they’re considering the Z. Cheers!

I bought one in 2020. It and the Canon 1Dx mark III are the perfect combo. The 645Z really gives you that shooting film when using it feel. The big shutter/mirror clunk etc. The output is great as well, solid camera not obsolete in my book. Its more of a timeless camera and one of a kind in a sea of 35mm and mirrorless systems.

Thank you for this video, you make me miss my 645Z. I can honestly say the 645Z raw files are amazing, better than X1D files and GFX files. I do feel like it is more malleable compared to the other digital medium format systems.

After watching your videos (many) using this camera, it was sad to know that you left this system. I just sold the GFX system and bought one brand new 645z with 3 lenses, and finally understand your points back in those days when you were a Pentax 645z shooter.

Moving to MF definitely warrants a different workflow on shooting -- I just shot a very small wedding yesterday and as expected, the 645Z was slow but I absolutely loved the experience. Really not common for someone to shoot a wedding/event with MF for obvious reasons but.. I may just do a quick video on it haha

Il used to shoot wedding with bronica etr 3 lenses 50-75-150 and Metz 60ct for daylight and nighlight ( Orange filter on the flash ) no meter needed on Kodak 100 film - 5,6/250 outdoor and 5,6 1/15 to 1/60 indoor. Changing film every 15shot. That was sporty but I was able to load a film in the dark with my right hand and a glass of champagne in my left hand ( I am lefty…). So this modern era of digital photography is science fiction for me becoming a real and decisive improvment. I am using now a Hassy H3D 31 ccd sensor 800iso flash syn 1/800e and I am so happy with the result it is realy 120 film look like result. This camera buddy is heavier and slower than a Z but who cares only the result and the satisfaction of the client is important plus you are working your muscles no need to go to LA fitness club …happy new year mate.

Excellent review! The 645z rocks!!

I started out with medium format in the 70's so size, weight, manual focus, and no image stabilization . . . I often use manual focus as a secondary option, even with fast autofocus digital. The 645z has a 'creamy' tonality, like comparing contrasty digital prints/display to photos from the 1800's, early 1900's. I like how you describe it as the smooth falloff from in focus to out-of-focus. And, the 645 film legacy glass . . . you can expand your options buying old 645 manual focus lenses. Let's face it, studio and medium format work is 'slower,' more deliberate. Compared to my two Olympus OM cameras, that have 50 to 80 megapixel 'hi rez' settings . . . I have yet to see them match the 645z.

Yo! Thanks for stopping by this video and leaving this comment. DEFINITELY this camera makes you work more deliberately and I love it. Even though it's an old camera by today's digital standards, the files are amazing to work with.

Looks like this is the perfect camera for me, who had been shooting 4x5 films and looking to step into the digital world. The ratio aspect, the weight or even the slowness and weight are definitely no problems to me (I used to hike with my 4x5 camera). In fact, when compared to shooting on an unwieldy view camera, all cons are no cons.

That´s great to have recent videos of this camera, and hear exactly what I think and feel. I just sold my GFX50R with 3 lenses, knowing that the 100s was coming, and swap to a brand new 645z with 3 lenses as well, the 35, 120 macro and the 55. Main reasons, the build quality and tactile experience. I can´t understand why Fuji put such bad quality dials and buttons on their cameras, and the hollow feel when you hold their cameras, is far from start a good shot. The build quality of the 645z is from another league and for sure part of the shooting experience. Also, having an optical viewfinder is matching with what I think is still the way to take pictures, in opposite to look to a screen inside a hole, like a video camera. That´s why I embraced the longest wait to join the Leica M system last year, and was a reminder to how good is going back to see the moment through glass, instead a screen. EVF will never be the same as OVF. keep doing more videos about this camera sharing your experience. Cheers.

Totally agree with your sentiment on the build quality and OVF. Am glad too you got into the M system-I definitely can see the allure of it despite the price of entry-my go to everyday cam is my M9. I’ve shot with Fuji and while I would’ve gotten into the GFX system (I personally love Fuji’s SOOC colors), there’s nothing more I really need other than the 645Z.

Great review! I totally agree with the points you set out. I currently own the 645z and absolutely adore it. Although it's considered outdated by now, I was curious to test out the newer and more advanced Fuji GFX 100s. The camera itself was stunning to look at and hold, and I was thoroughly impressed with its features. However, one aspect left me feeling underwhelmed in comparison to the 645z: the viewfinder. The newer cameras' digital viewfinders had a noticeable delay, and it became apparent to me how superior the 645's optical viewfinder is. It's large, bright, and natural, and I realized that this was a key reason why I had formed such a strong attachment to it. The salesperson and I shared a smile as we agreed that I should stick with my 645z. Instead, I decided to upgrade it with a nearly new 645 FA 90mm 2.8 lens for only USD1400. Even with its 50mp sensor, the camera can produce massive prints, and the film-like quality is something that I truly cherish. I'll complete my camera bag with the iPhone 14pro for handy shots.

Thanks for the watch! And totally agree that while it is “outdated” by today’s standards, I just can’t imagine at the moment not using the 645Z. Re: the viewfinder, it’s another great feature that today’s EVF can’t compete with. Yes, it’s great to have all the info there but while shooting, I typically have my settings set and I don’t deviate much so I’d rather focus on intentionally creating.

Thinking about this. Can you use the camera display to zoom in on very fine detail to manual focus? Just like your normal 35mm DSLR camera but not sure if MF is so different. Or to put it another way is there anything different about using this camera over a 35mm DSLR or Mirrorless? Funny I just found my film-based Mamiya 645 yesterday. Looking like this or A7R IV or maybe V.

@@killpop8255 It has a live view in which it has focus peaking too if you wanted to manually focus easier if that's what you're asking. Re: is there anything different about this camera over 35mm/full-frame/etc? I mean, it's a camera and tool that's to be used how you want it to. At the end of day, it's what the camera makes you feel while of course enabling you to do your job as easy and efficient as possible. So, your. mileage with this camera will vary.

I will add that Elinchrom lights have a Pentax flash trigger that allows for faster than 125 sync. It has it's own pros and cons but for studio work I have had no issues with it.

😆 loll Yea, am in the camp of less is more which is why I surely prefer creating portraits vs any coverage lol

I love my Pentax 645 digital system. Of the two bodies I actually prefer the 645D and the output of the CCD sensor. The big win for me is the glass, the older optical design of the glass, low-element primes, make for fantastic image quality. Whilst I have an extensive selection of FA glass, my most used is the 80-160. A much underrated system, even by modern standards.

Totally understand on the CCD -- I favor my oldie M9 over the SL1's output -- there's just for sure conveniences on more modern cameras i.e. autofocus, LCD screen, etc I haven't tried the older lenses but am now gonna look into it.... haha! Thanks for watching.

@@845a The only disadvantage of the D over the Z is the high ISO performance, but I tend to shoot everything at base ISO and chuck Profoto lighting at it. The Z comes in hand when I need to bump the ISO. Have you used the Leica R8? It may be an APSC sensor, but its weak IR filter in conjunction with the CCD hase a real film-like quality.

@@baxtermarrison5361 You using base ISO is providing example that while a new camera specs may be better, you knowing what you need is what's most important. Re: Leica R8, I haven't but am now gonna be looking that up! lol When I got my Leica M9 and stopped into Leica's SF store a few years ago, I was chatting with one of the employees who's naturally a photographer himself. When I told him that I "only had" a set of Minolta's Rokkor M lenses, he ended up showing me prints of a shoot he did of John Mayer with the M9 and the Minolta Rokkor 40mm. With my recent series of Frame explained, I'm discussing more of how I got into the position of making that specific portrait and less about gear/settings. As much as I love gear/the tech, I think the discussion of photography and business is missing a whole lot and hopefully my insights and soon others as I'll be interviewing other creators will be of interest.

@@845a As you say, people do not take time to understand what their equipment can do for them, or how to get the best out of it. Gear does not interest me that much as my Pentax 645 system can do pretty much everything I need. For the extreme ends of the focal range I have a Nikon system. For everything else I have a Mamiya 67 system and a Sinar F. Yes, I enjoy shooting film, the aesthetic of the larger formats, and the fun of the choice of imulsions available. Part of the problem, as I see it any way, with KZread is that gear review and speculation drives eyeballs and viewing hours. For content creators the temptation to go for the low hanging fruit is too much of a temptation. I finf the insights into the life of working pros very useful. I also enjoy those that focus on process and creative tips and tricks. I am quite happy to leave the gear-hype channels to the fauxtographers out there that think the more money they spend on gear, the better their pictures will be! I may just be an enthusiastic amateur, but amateur does not need to be amateurish. As a hobbiest I can put any earnings from my photographic work into gear so I can use what I like, rather than needing to worry about return on capital.

The images are definitely worth it!. Who knows, perhaps the new Pentax 645 is already in development with an eye to addressing the problems. It seems like a faster write speed is definitely an obvious need. The Fujifilm offerings seem to be powerful tools despite using EVF and Pentax would need to be offering an equally compelling proposition but with a hybrid viewfinder and updated features. As you say. The competition is often high megapixel full-frame rather than other medium format models.

And yea, the GFX would’ve been my next medium format camera but since I got the lens line up I’ve wanted (notably the 90mm 2.8) I don’t honk it’s worth rebuying lens just for the switch. I’ve shot with Fuji (have had the x100 and XT series and still currently have the XE3 with a slew of lenses as it was my events camera since I love the JPEGs out of it..) so I know Fuji colors are also amazing. I personally doubt Pentax is gonna develop another given their current market share but I’d be very surprised if they announced a follow up haha

Another comment that isn't showing asked about 645D being better than the 645Z: 645Z specs wise is better the 645D but that doesn't make the 645D less capable in producing great images. As mentioned in the video, it'll always come down to what exactly are you shooting that necessitates the gear you need to make it happen. Hope this helps!

Yo! Sorry for the delay here but yes, you can zoom in during live preview to when manually focusing + focus peaking to assist. Re: any different about using this camera over a 35mm.. well, it is entirely different but what matters most is what are you exactly shooting? Every camera + lens combo will have its strengths and weaknesses. Image superiority is an assumed pro with medium format but it also doesn't mean it's necessarily better in all situations.

Hello. I hope you are well. I have picked up a 645z and like it but I have one problem and maybe you know the answer. I like to use an autofocus lens on spot focus. I will focus and then recompose. The camera seems to have a constant autofocus so it never holds focus when I recompose. Any thoughts? Many thanks for any assistance.

Heya! I've been center focusing and then reframing since my first DSLR (Minolta Maxxum 7D). It's the same process with the 645z: frame, half press shutter to lock focus and hold, and then reframe. I'm assuming it's not set to continuous AF as otherwise, it should just lock so long shutter is half pressed. Let me know if when you get it to work the way it should!

I think it could be an awesome system, even in 2023, if they could get the pricing right. I scored a brand new Canon 5DSR for 1500 usd a while back when they dropped the price before discontinuing it. I currently have a 90mm tse lens on backorder, for 2200 usd. It seems like the ultimate studio setup for product. The price of the 645z body has come down but it's currently 800 usd more than the gfx 50s ii. The 90mm lens is like 3500 usd currently. I think it's a hard sell at those prices. Especially when the gf 120mm macro is like 2700 usd. I like big cameras. I have an RZ67 that I love shooting, even handheld. If people are buying the pentax at all its because they are already in the system and have a fondness for the brand and are willing to pay a premium. Anyone who is just looking for 50mp and high iq for a good price is probably finding it elsewhere. It'd a shame because I'd buy one if the prices were different.

I'd agree that price wise, 645Z really stands far-out given the newer tech too. It would be really hard to recommend the 645Z to anyone looking for medium format unless they absolutely hate EVF. If so, then 645Z is really the option haha

I just got an r5 because of video, but I was a medium format film shooter and finally moved to digital in 2016... But I really want to move to the 645z... I hope pentax doesn't abandon this system. They should just update the sensor, and image processor - f*ck mirrorless, there's a market segment soon to be dramatically underserved in the optical viewfinder world

Yea one can only hope they'll continue to support it with another upgrade. If you can get your hands on one with a good price and shutter life on it, I'd say go for it. Depending on what you shoot, the 55mm 2.8 is a really a great starter lenses and isn't too expensive if you get it used as well.

Thanks for watching! You’ll need to define the speed you need. 645Z isn’t fast either so if you rely on quick AF and/or high fps, 645Z would probably still disappoint

When I had my 645Z for a couple of years, I figured if it died I’d move on to Fuji’s GFX. But after getting the 90mm macro, which combined with the 55mm essentially covers what I need, I haven’t really looked elsewhere. GFX100s of course is much better in the sense that it has better tech (as all new cams should), but being reminded what my subjects are helps ground me back to 645Z. Good luck on finding one that fits your price budget! Am sure you’re bound to find one.

I am using the Fujifilm GFX 100 for work and I compared it to my Pentax 645z file super rez ( double the resolution making it 102mp ) and the quality and buttery smooth gradients where the same. Technology is there to up rez and still compete with newer camera, sensor wise. I love my Pentax Z and the crystal clear OVF compared to a EVF, specially when working with strobe. And with the Godox HSS available, the 1/125 sync speed is no longer an issue either.

In the end I bought a used phase one kit with a full frame medium format sensor... for a similar amount to the gfx100 body... and I must say I do not regret buying what is now probably considered out of date equipment... the files are simply stunning... I decided to keep the pentax 645d as a backup... the Pentax seems much more robust than the phase one... and the results it produces from the old Kodak sensor are still marvelous... take care..

I'm curious if you've used the body with some of the older Pentax 645 lenses (used for the 645, 645n, 645nii). And if so, how they compare / feel in your workflow. Thanks.

Yo Jeremy! I had the 120mm macro and a 45-85mm. I think they were fine with the 645Z. I ended up letting them go because I felt I need just touch of modern lenses with the AF lol Plus, it's good knowing that AW (all weather) lenses gave me piece of mind if I ever did myself in some rain.

Thank you for this review, it's full of useful information and I also share all your considerations on slowness, 4:3 ratio and simple process. I've been using Pentax 67 for 20 years, I am considering the purchase of a first digital camera and I am considering also Pentax 645Z because it's an affordable MF reflex camera with OVF (since I like OVF, the only alternative would probably be some FF as Nikon D850 - if I don't miss something). All the matter is quite complicated, but I would like to ask you, as an user of this 645z, a simple question: what's the longest shutter speed you use this Pentax 645z freehand (55mm lens, ambient light) without any traces of (micro) motion blur, even at a 100% magnification? The longest shutter speed I can use the Pentax 67 + 90mm lens (same conditions as above) is 1/30 in case I raise up the mirror before the shot - as I usually do every time I need. The longest shutter speed I can use Nikon D850 is 1/250, perhaps 1/125. So, considering this 3 stops difference between Pentax 67 and Nikon d850, I would really like to know what's your experience with Pentax 645z. What's the longest shutter speed you can use Pentax645z freehand (55mm lens, ambient light, no flash light) and avoid any traces of (micro) motion blur, even at a magnification of 100%? What's more, is this freehand shutter speed even longer in case you raise up the mirror of the Pentax 645z before the shot? Does it make a difference? How many stop difference? Hey Enrico -- thanks for watching the review! Re: slowest shutter speed with 55mm, 1/30 for me is cutting it close. Obviously it's dependent how stead you are and if subject is moving but I've gotten away with 1/30th shutter in several occasions. The only time I have used mirror up which is rare when it's on the tripod for long exposures to avoid the vibrations. So I have no experience unfortunately using mirror up when hand holding it. In your opinion do you think the 90 mm 2.8 is the best portrait lens for the 645 that’s the lens I have but I feel the need to have a longer lens for some reason maybe the 150

I absolutely love the 90mm when I have space. The "problem" with the 150mm is that isn't weather/dust resistant. If that isn't an issue at all, by all means get the 150mm especially if it suites your style.

What very few people talk about when they talk about detail is OPTICAL resolution. It's like people don't know it exists. An A7RV with it's 61mp still has less optical resolution than the 645Z or Fuji GFX50. If optical resolution wasn't important then mobile phones would outclass 50mp cameras. Do they? No.

Thanks for watch and rewatch! Personally, it’s still a very capable camera after these years. I’d say if you want tethered shooting, unfortunately it isn’t supported as well as the other cameras (you’d have to use Pentax software and then use Lightroom’s watch folder). It works but isn’t as fast if that’s going to be a priority.

Someone had left a comment asking about using the 645Z for video. Am replying here because his comment for some reason isn't showing up here: While you can shoot video with Z, it's outdated on every aspect. Get a dedicated video camera/rig if you're planning on shooting videos more.

Hi! is 1/4000sec shutter enough for its sensor? did you ever feel you needed more speed when shooting outdoors in a broad day light?

Haha, you think you have it tough in 2021 with a Z, try the D! Garh!! (but man it makes beautiful rich images).

Wow.. I have the same lens kit. Only difference is I own the Pentax 645D instead of the 645Z. I much prefer the CCD sensor in the 645D.

The sad part is, that there are no news or leaks of any new 645 system product from Ricoh and last product was introduced more than 5 years ago :( Camera shutter 100k IS NOT LIFE EXPECTANCY, but just number of actuations tested to keep correct timing in testlab. It can die after 20k shots if you are shooting in sand or salty weather a lot. Or it can work for half a million or even more, if it is protected from dust and well lubed. Only the timing can be a bit off over time. Lets say you set 1/1000s and camera in shots 1/850s. Not a big deal with digital cameras and raw exposure headrooms...

Ah good point re: camera shutter ratings-and for sure, cameras can die for a myriad of reasons (which is why having a back up is good no matter what). Looks like B&H is still selling the 645Z new and my assumption is that Ricoh is just letting this be their minimum product to still be somewhat relevant in the medium format game (I don’t know anyone who uses Pentax’s DSLRs..). Hopefully tho, their camera division survives enough to have some kind of new medium format camera to renew their longevity (I know there’s some diehard GR users but I don’t know how much that makes up of their total camera division sales to stay afloat). Thanks tho for watching and sharing your 2 cents!

@@845a They are working on new APSC K3III, but K70 lowend has no replacement yet. Many users left when they focused on K1 FF system and APSC suffered. Now they have incompetitive FF system without 3rd party lens support, APSC system with KP and K70.. Q system died and 645 is being kept in freezer. APSC with machines like K100D, K10D, K20D, K5, Kx, Kr, K3, K50 was the main source of income. And they deliberately neglected it loosing many users. They used to be number 3 in DSLR. Now the sales are around 2% of DSLR market. :(

After working a few years ago for Remax with a Canon 550D with 530.000 actuations, I realize exactly what your are saying. With a proper care, we don´t need to concern about the conservative shutter life expectancy.

Is that an M6 behind you?

Anyone coming from MF film cameras doesn't get a camera for speed. They already have experience and know roughly what the image will look like. I don't need to see previews. I currently shoot with a 6x7 so the waiting for images to preview isn't a con and neither is the size and weight of the camera. I went for the Pentax 645D because I wanted the Kodak CCD sensor instead which has more of a film aesthetic. Full frame DSLRs are crap. Even the best one on the market doesn't match up to MF in terms of DR, tonal range and picture quality. My 6x7 film camera is still well ahead of the Pentax 645D. People who comment on what other people should buy should just be quiet. It is not your place to advise what other photographers should buy.

I haven’t had the opportunity to shoot 6x7 film but I have no doubt it’s DR surpasses digital. I’ve shot 35mm film before and that alone has shown me how much you can push/pull highlights/shadows. Thanks tho for watching and yes-totally agree that people shouldn’t tell others what to buy but I’m always up for a good debate/healthy argument - the one here tho just wasn’t any of that hahah cheers!

Yup! Memory card slot 1 in my first 645Z has started to fail unfortunately so I've now moved to body #2 and using my first body as a back up. Are you looking into it?

Agreed considering GFX 50s II is only $500 cheaper. I wonder if they will lower it but also if they need to lower the price.

@@sdhute Yea, definitely knowing your style and what you need from the lens will help complete your whole investment picture. I literally shoot about 95% of my portraits with my 55mm lol I brought my 90mm on a recent family portrait shoot in SF and I'm just more efficient with the 55mm which gives me space to move in and out quickly. As much as I like Fuji's colors, despite not having any experience with GFX cameras, I really get what I need from Pentax's 645Z. Looking forward to seeing what you get!

I have been using one for the past 3 years and it is by far my favorite camera to use. Like you I will be getting a second body .. I have lenses ranging from the 28-45 all the way up to the 300mm FA and find them all incredibly sharp. samples of my work can be found at www.michaelfullana.com

@@845a I have bought most of the lenses on ebay from camera stores in Japan. They arrive within 2 weeks at most and are pristine in their condition. The camera goes everywhere with me, even on family vacations. On vacations I take the 28-45, 55mm .28 and the 90mm 2.8.

@@michaelfullanaphoto7884 I’ll have to follow suit! Been getting more out of my Leica M9 for our baby girl for the sake of weight but will for sure utilize the 645Z. Weight won’t be an excuse-promise. Haha

You bought a ~$3000 BACKUP body for a camera at 1/3 its rated shutter life??? This does not make sense to me... Why not buy a leica or something that would be more useful and diversify your kit? That backup body will never be used

And oh, to argue the same for camera bodies that have dual card slots. Keyword here is *backup*. Let me know if I should explain about the need for a backup or are you just gonna argue solely on the value/price of this camera body and that I should be using my money otherwise? And speaking of, just wondering if you watched the video and saw what was on the shelf and in my hand other than the 645Z? Because now I have a feeling you’d be telling me otherwise which Leica I should’ve bought.
