TBH I think Mitch’s pitch accuracy is just so good that he sounds just like the studio version. If you listen closely to the solo on The Lucky ones you can tell by his breaths, they are different from the studio. In the live his first breath is shorter than the studio first breath and when he takes the second breath it is more deep. Mitch is a professional, he might be struggling right now with depression but he always shows up to perform, even when he is struggling mentally.

Mitch has made it no secret that he has struggled with anxiety since childhood. He has said that since he's been cooped up at home with the pandemic, it's made his anxiety come out a lot more when he has to perform. When you get performance anxiety you have to sort of build a callous to it by performing a lot. You build up a tolerance and it doesn't affect you as much. He doesn't have that callous now so the anxiety is in full swing. I know when I'm dealing with a lot of anxiety, people think I'm standoffish or bored or not feeling well or that I don't care which it's not!. For what it's worth, I don't think he's lip syncing here but, honestly, I don't really care. These performances are technically 'live' anyway. They all get recorded separately then edited in together.

Exactly! Who cares if it's lip syncing or not, it's still the original singer. If anyone knows anything about studio mixing, tracks are added and removed all the time after recording to give the same song a different feel or a "live" sound. I give them a lot of credit, going out and singing a different city and performing many times a week. Your voice is your only instrument and one needs to take care of it or it won't perform well and it can take a very long time to heal. Thank you Pentatonix for sharing your unbelievable talent with us. ❤ You deserve to lip sync once in a while to catch your breath.

Hard to tell if he is lipsynching or just following the music. Mitch has had masterful control of his voice for years and it's gotten better over time. He will occasionally go into riffs and runs but mostly he sticks to the notes of the song (if not to just keep from running into someone else's part/solo) so he could just be consistent. He is undeniably going through something, especially of you listen to the words of "Never gonna cry again" but in the past he was kind of known to sing his way through it

About the technical aspects of this, I asked my bf for his opinion cause he's an audio engineer and he told me the following: "Some of these performances, towards the end, have no playback. Most of them do, but playback is not what you (meaning me, the commenter) are describing. If you have some pre recorded track that you are actually singing over, that's a playback. Playback doesn't equal 100% lipsync. (so like what Scott was doing with his riffs, which he had the chance of doing exactly because of the playback). In the studio version they all record their parts individually and in fact multiple parts each that they then layer in the mix, which would be obviously be impossible to do live, just as with non acapella musicians, you can't for example sing lead and back vocals simultaneously or play both solo and chords during a guitar riff. Playback is used all the time in all genres to produce a fuller sound and there's nothing wrong with it. It doesn't make someone less talented, or lessen their ability to perform well. It's just used to stylistically produce a sound closer to the fullness of the studio version, which is especially directed at these talk show performances as opposed to concerts, because these performances are also to advertise the new album so it's like a snippet of what the viewer (many of whom might have not known Ptx beforehand) can expect to hear on the album, so they're sticking to being as close to the studio version as possible." Very interesting insight if I do say so myself, especially since I was always under the impression that "playback" meant 100% lipsync, but apparently it doesn't. The more you know. :) But the conclusion that comes out of this whole convo that we had is that playback wouldn't make them "less talented" or "frauds" cause they're not singing 100% live, it's a purely stylistic choice that literally everyone uses, but with others you have to pay a bit more attention to notice it cause instruments if played right can sound the same as the studio version.

You’re definitely right about the live singing and tbh I hate when PTX fans make it sound like a moral sin to lip sync sometimes. Every artist has to lip sync sometimes whether it be bc of the platform their performing on (some platforms/tv stations MAKE artists lip sync to avoid any problems/issues), or if someone is sick, etc... Some people think pentatonix would never lip sync bc they’re so against it but it’s like not bad at all to do?? Lmao I loved the video a lot good work!!

Okay as typical Aries, who won't let go of the belief, as I am, I listened to the COFFEE IN BED the same time comparison and I found the weirdest proof of my life: Studio: (and I'll pick you up every)TIME - "i" sounds like one long syllable [taaaaaɪm] Live: (and I'll pick you up every)TIME - "i" sounds like there is "h" in between - [tahahahaɪm] I do realize how weird it looks and sounds, but it's there, which proves and Mitch is the actual Queen and he managed to hit the timing and note right on the spot... yes, he doesn't do all the riffs and runs, but it's more typical for Scott to have his "diva moments" which I honestly don't appreciate that much because he then sings over everyone else half of the time (please don't go destroy me here, I'm just saying my opinion)

After reading about your "weird" proof, I went back and listened to the left ear, right ear section where Scott and Mitch sing the phrase together and I heard the same difference in how Mitch sang "time." Very nice catch! I think some people forget how consistent Mitch tends to be. He may also be trying harder for consistency in these performances because he knows that they have to be put together because of the current restrictions.

The most likely thing that’s going on here is that they recorded more toned down versions of the songs and lip synced to those instead of the studio versions. That would explain Scott doing his thing with the riffs and also why Matt doesn’t dip down to those surprising G1s from Coffee in Bed. Overall, I think it’s for quality reasons and to have a better promotion for their album and honestly I’m all for it, the editing on these is pretty fun and cool to watch, idk why it’s so entertaining to see them appear and disappear like if they were lights, lol. They started doing it since the Christmas album and it’s honestly great to see them do it, we all know that they can sing this live, they’re all star vocalists and Matt had Opera training, like we know that they can sing. Sometimes it’s just better to lip sync because it has more benefits for the album and the group. This was a great video and comparison, excited to see more, and whoever says you are a fake fan can gladly eat my Pentafists!

Thank you. This is a tremendous amount of work and attention to detail. Someone commented they think Scott is drowning everyone out and saying "hey look at me." Scott is a very genuine heart and soul person and singer. He has talented adlibs (riffs, etc.) I truly believe he doesn't plan most of them but they flow out naturally. PTX all have strong voices and their harmonies or adlibs are not lost. They know each other and have an uncanny feel for placenent. Example: when Mitch hits the high note in "Can you feel the love?" Scott comes in with a soulful run, but you can still hear Mitch ending his. It was beautiful. Maybe commenter can go back and listen to the Sing offs to understand more who Scott is. Also though not live, also "Waving through a window." Blessings ...

if it looks like Mitch is lip synching on the 'studio' version of CiB that's because the sound on the video probably isn't really the studio sound, it's a video made in a lighting and maybe sound studio made to match up to the higher quality sound studio recording made for release. they are all lip synching to the actual recorded in a sound studio version created to be released. they may well sing when they are making the video, but the recorded version for release was made in a sound studio. EVERYONE does that. not just every one in here in PTX, every performer, period. Not in every single video maybe, but in the vast majority. a video studio set up to deal with lighting and visual action is an entirely different technological beast than a sound recording studio for creating a music recording specifically. even non-singing , dramatic performances requires dubbing and sound corrections, actors have to do hours and hours of it because the nuances of their voices weren't caught, or their voices were overwhelmed entirely by the sound of their stage business, or worse in the case of filming out in the world instead of on a studio stage. On the other hand, these 'live' videos were made on a television soundstage, with relatively little movement as they sing which might interfere with the voices and maybe a bit of re-recording that the studio audience would have seen, had there been an actual studio audience, added to tweak the version released to youtube.

I'm not 100% sure of this, but i think prettymuch all the live songs in tv shows (late night with James Corden, Jimmy Kimmel, Fallon, etc ...), especially during Covid, are lypsinced, you can tell because they are prettymuch shot like a music video, which there is nothing wrong with in my opinion atleast, it removes the authenticity that you would maybe see on tour, but you have to see that talk shows are made to spread promo for the album, so the song has to sound prettymuch the same as in the album, plus you can tell that they recorded another version for the live shows so it's not like they just lypsinced the version that is in the album, they took time to record another version, but yes the videos we see of live versions are prettymuch all recorded like music videos aka lypsinced with the intend of looking like it's live. And it's not just PTX btw, prettymuch all artists i've seen do "live" shows during covid have used the same technice .

These "live" versions are not live. Some of them, like the one on Kelly Clarkson, are obviously edited. I believe they may be in the same place but not at the same time. In the official video for "Coffee in Bed", this is obvious. In many of these others, the editors are digitally putting them in the same shot. I am, in no way, faulting anyone for this. We are still in the middle of a pandemic. I have had the impression that some of these versions were lip synced with Scott adding a few riffs to make it sound a bit different. Historically, the vast majority of musical appearances on TV and in videos have been lip synced. That's not going to stop now in the middle of covid restrictions.
