Recorded in a closet, video shot in a kitchen, edited on a laptop, production budget of $400. The result? Their first Grammy and superstardom! This was the original group, consisting of Scott Hoying (tall blonde guy, silver hair in this video), a baritone with a five-to-six octave range; Avi Kaplan (dark beard and cornrows), true basso profundo, but also with an impressive range; Mitch Grassi (short dark hair, a chameleon who's look changes in almost every video), a super rare contra-tenor who can hit some mind-blowing high notes; Kirstin "Kirstie" Maldonado (the only female member and also quite the chameleon herself), mezzo-soprano with the voice of an angel; and Kevin 'K.O." Olusola, (wearing the goggles in this video because his eyes couldn't handle the contacts), one of the best beatboxers in the world who is also a world class cellist (plays cello in some of their songs) and has a beautiful tenor singing voice, speaks at least four languages, graduated pre-med from Yale but put his medical career on hold to join Pentatonix. They've had only one membership change. Avi left the group in the fall of 2017. He was experiencing some personal issues with burnout and trouble keeping up with the band's exhaustive schedule, plus his mother was very ill at the time. He took about a year off from the music business, then returned with a truly amazing solo career. He also helped find his replacement Matt Sallee, who joined as a temporary member at the end of 2017, then became the full-time bass singer in March of 2018.

Couple other points: Avi was classically trained and I don't know if Matt can reach the lowest notes that Avi can, but he has the voice of an angel and also really completes the group.

If helpful, here are their names: Scott Hoying (tall blond baritone) Mitch Grassi (counter tenor) Kirstin Maldonado (mezzo soprano) Kevin Olusola (beatboxer, tenor and occasionally plays cello) Avi Kaplan (bass) Avi retired from PTX in 2017 and has been replaced by Matt Sallee.

They did this on a $400 budget, filmed the segments in the closet at the apartment, then shared by Avi and Kevin, and put it together at the kitchen table, still in that same apartment. That video won them their first Grammy award. They have, at this writing, five nominations and three wins at the Grammys.

So thrilled you watched this one. The early days are important to watch. As mentioned the bas (for 6+ years and with the band from beginning) is Avi Kaplan. He has a solo career which is also amazing. He and Kevin Olusola (beat boxer and celloist) were best friend/brothers and make up the bass and percussion of the band. They were also roommates. The band won 3 Grammys while Avi was with them. This one was their first. It was made for about $400 and filmed in Avi and Kevin's apartment in the kitchen and closet. Avi left on good terms and helped the group get his replacement, Matt Sallee. If you've not watched Hallelujah (video and live (Christmas Special 2016) I would recommend viewing those. Please watch the earlier stuff first so you can see where they started, get to know them better, and appreciated now where they have landed. Scott Hoying (tall blond and baritone), Mitch Grassi( tenor dark hair) and Kirstie(sounds like thirsty lol) Maldonado grew up in Texas together. The entire group met one day before they were on a singing competition called the Sing Off. One of the judges, Shawn Patrik Stockman, dubbed Avi and Kevin the "meat and potatoes" of the band. You can also watch those episodes on KZread. Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy was their second Grammy and the third was singing Jolene with Dolly Pardon. Yes, great suggestion! There is so much "movement" throughout all of the notes and their voices are like butter... I can so easily get lost in the sounds they produce with my headphones.

Great reaction ;D This is one of their best IMO! You won’t regret checking their covers of “Bohemian Rapsody”, “Can’t hold us”, “Royals” or “Love Again” (this last one an original of them). If you want to explore other A Capella’s, Citizen Queen won’t disappoint you (check their cover of “Never Enough” or “Evolution of Girl Groups”) See you in the next one maybe

If you like this one, might I suggest "Love Again" which is an original of theirs done in EDM style and they are costumed up like cyberpunk. fantastic song!

They have recently come out with "The Wizard of Ahhs". This is the coolest video I have ever seen. They cover the whole movie inn one short video. They dress the part and sing up-to-date music that really fits the show!!! Even if you don't do a reaction to this, you need to see it for yourselves. It is so awesome. I remember watching the movie when it first came on TV, in black and white, and I think it was five years before they added color, which was so amazing to me. I was 10 years old before I saw a friend's color TV, so this video was very special to me. I love your reactions:)

Ok. Love your reaction to PTX. But here's a helpful bit of advice. Invest in headsets. Preferably ones with bass boost. You loose so much when you don't have them. There is so much side to side on headsets that make you feel so much more immersed.

If you like Disney songs try Voice Play's "Moana Medley" or their "The Little Mermaid Medley". Both are stellar and will give you a good idea of what another acapella band can do. If you aren't a big Disney song fan, they also do a couple of songs from "The Nightmare Before Christmas" that are great. Home Free is another acapella band worth watching. Their "Ring of Fire" and "Man of Constant Sorrow" videos are stellar.
