i'm in my very first week of fiddle lessons, and although i'm no where near the right notes your teaching makes me smile from ear to ear, thank you!

I played violin for 4 years 5th grade - 9th grade. Hvae not touched one in over 40years! My Son, a stings teacher gave me a violin to fool around with... Loving the fiddle! Love the lessons!

I'm beginning to play fiddle. I love the sound, when you play. When I play, Its like "screech screech" -almost a note- "screech screech"

Just had to pause my playing to say thank ou Fiddlehed! I sound like I'm gettin somewhere (high five)

I want to learn chords and double stops. So excited to have come across these lessons. I started playing violin at 10 years old but didn't really catch on until high school then when I raised my kids, kind of put it down for 30 years. Now at 66, am playing every Friday nite in a worship band. I want to add more to the music than just playing melody. These lessons are so inspiring and I feel I can connect to this teaching style. I love the humor as discrete as it is and the sound of the voice and accent is very pleasant.

Daniel, make sure you listen and try to do the scales by listening. If you have problems, check your tabs but try to train your ears. Cheers.

I've used pentatonic scales with clawhammer banjo playing and now with the fiddle (been playing one year now). A friend recently told me to think of the introduction to My Girl. He taught a group of children in a weekend class to play My Girl on their different instruments then explained the pentatonic scale and its uses. My friend, John Allison, showed me this at the Will McLean Festival while I was playing with a mandolin at our camp site. It really makes improvising so much easier. I pulled off a simple break using the scale up the E string while playing mandolin at an open jam and a very enthusiastic young lady asked if I would give her lessons! I told her about the pentatonic scale and referred her to John.

You have such a wonderful way of showing the steps to what your teaching. You are patient, easy to follow and I had fun learning from you. For once I feel like it's possible for me to learn to play. I am a mature lady, meaning old and not so sure about the lady part, lol that just started learning about a month ago. I watched this video and feel that I sound like I'm getting somewhere. lol I practiced till my fingers were numb. I learned more watching your video than I have all the others put together. I don't mean to put any of them down because they are very good too. It's just the way you explain things. Thank you for all your help and I can quit looking now for my favorite instructor. I want to grow up and be like you someday... lol I'm a 54 yr old hippie. Just so you know... lol

Thanks. Do you have any lessons for guitar players who want to begin playing violin. A week in and I’m making a tolerable noise, my mandolin experience is very helpful but I don’t speak violin, I’m doing scales, and simple tunes but I find very few lessons specifically for guitars people who want to expand their range. Your lessons are very well done, thank you for all the effort you put into making this beautiful instrument more accessible for untrained players who just want to play music.

I forgot I had viewed this video before . I see from the comments I'm the Bob brawley and the Lior Holtslag. Before viewing this video I read an article on the pentatonic scale ? it appears that in all major keys the F and B notes are skipped. But the article only covered the G D A E Oh and the C major pentatonic scale the article went into the minor pentatonic. Boy it's a life time of memorizing to get this down pat. I admire your urge ring to play by ear and have tried to distinguish notes or intervals on a casio keyboard but didn't find I was catching on. One technique I find fascinating is a technique sort of called sole figs. That the phonic spelling of the term that is where you learn a tune using doe ray me fah so lah tee doe . The Traylor Fuentes youtube introduced me to that. I check my doe ray me with a electronic tuner and is seem like I sing themall in Bb. So back to square one. Thanks for listening

Great to hear this!! I actually want to create some looser podcast style lessons.

Why not do it aurally by listening ( Royal college tests )and copying like aural training ,,,,enjoy the sound yes but with the ears and minus the eyes ?

Not really . . what key was the first pentatonic scale , you started the first one on G, so it's G major? And a lot of YT. teachers don't say the notes . ,and you don't call out the notes but say the finger numbers . . I find using finger numbers quirky . Where did you teachers come up with using finger numbers instead of the notes letter name which would describe the exact location ( sharp, natural , flat. )..WHEN ONLY FINGER NUMBERS ARE USED . THEN THE STUDENT MUST ALREADY KNOW THE SCALE OF THE KEY If a student knows the scale of the key I would think they would know The nome of the note that the 3ed. finger would hit on the D string in the key of G major . I'm not asking a question but just making a comment

No, no Ì don't know the pentatonic scale yet . It look like you played stopped A, B on the G string possible an open D on the D string and a F or Fsharp on the D strings . You may have played a E òn the D string

FiddleHed so I see its 1,2,3__5,6, interval so the next question is "Is that true in all keys" and so not to burden you I looked it up on Google search and yes or the simple explanation I could understand is "on major keys don't play the 4 *& 7 interval and in minor keys don't play the 2 & 6 interval"

Why bother with G major pentatonic when G major itself is just as easy and easier to remember initially?
