This is what I have learned about the most top notch musicians, producers and sound engineers: the better you really are, the more humble you are. That is because the more you learn, the more you realize you actually have much more to learn and the people around you will probably have the answers you seek. These two AMAZING sound engineers just proved that to be true.
Who knew that JJP was such a naturally talented interviewer?
Truly unique amongst internet content I have come across. This is what youtube was made for (the cat videos are ok too...) this is true diffusion of tallent and information, really forward thinking way of doing things. Thanks so much!
I'm 49...and have been doing this as a pro for over 25 years. This was the one show that made most sense to me so far! ...probably something about mileage ;o)
Dave, you are an absolute hero in the music industry, you have no ego and always help others be better ... God bless your experice and phanthropical ideology to make recorded music better
Jack Joseph Puig is a real good listener I've also noticed that in other interviews. Awesome episode!!
Thank you Dave, thank you Jack, Herb, and everyone else who makes this show possible. This is a great one! Colin.
when a guy that has the credits that Dave has, says "I don't know if I am good" its actually quite re-assuring, If he thinks like this, it tells me I'm not mad for feeling the same way. Thanks (even though I'm 8/9 years late to the party)
I don't think I have ever seen anyone in the music industry who was so intelligent, smart and so full of knowledge and so lacking in "attitude." You inspire me. Thank you.
That speech by JJP at the start of their interview sums it up for me. Pensado=Legend.
Always great to tune in and listen to the experts ,
2 big time guys talking to each other amazing...
i could watch you guys chat all day
at long last! this is a dream interview!
Dave, i truly gotta meet you bro!!!! You're awesome
Dave... you and Herb spoil us!! Thx!
29:07 I was caught off guard by how much I agree with this statement. I've always thought this about Dave Pensado.
Best episode yet! And I've seen them all!
This is incredible. I am so moved. I really want to hug you guys.
Great interview!
Amazing interview, keep up the good work.
Loveee
What a great, great interview between two great, great people. At least, it seems that way to me. And, I'm reminded of a saying my father (a mechanical engineer) taught me (a computer engineer and I hope a musical engineer): "An engineer is a person who can do for a dime what any fool can do for a dollar." Ok, the quantities are a little outdated and maybe were never true, but the idea has some value. I wonder what Dave would say about this aphorism.
I wish Dave could mix one of my records, but the way his saying they are getting paid a lot of money 💰 all the time. 😂 😂
the "novel" metaphore is great!
Great,great,great episode!
great show, looking forward to next week's show.
My piano player wife would argue that piano players pay attention to tone, too. They are just historically at the mercy of the piano and room of a particular venue. That's why you see so many keyboards stuffed into a grand piano shells at live gigs nowadays.
I liked the video before I watched it!!
Epic episode!
I LOVE it!! after having to deal with very similar situations this past two weeks with a client, this episode shows that it doesn't just happen with us local cats. This comes as motivation. Thanks Dave & Herb.. and Jack! i'm keeping this episode for the times i need it. D
Dave you are amazing!
So encouraging that Dave didn't pick up mixing until mid 30s
haha...nice twist! we needed this. thx Mr Puig
great episode! love hearing about how to deal with difficult situations that arise when dealing with clients/label and how to not take things personally when they don't like mixing decisions/ideas.
Two great guys.
Have started to watch 3 of these but never managed to endure long enough to get to the main interview.....
Funny because just one of these days i was thinking... man Pensado should be in one of the episodes =/ haha
You guys are awesome! Thank you so much for doing this :) Also, are those some barefoot MM12s I see in the background?
Nice one ..........
Emotional!
holy shit new favorite show (this is the first video I watched) Thanks so much!!! As an engineer with no friends, thank god for youtube!

100%!
dave. is. awesome. period.
amen brother
Best "Lair" ever. DP seems aggressive/irritated (in a good way). It helps more to hear about what is "wrong" than all the usual "everything's great" vibe. Most helpful yet!
I also get depressed if a mix doesn't turn out right! My non-musical life is always directly influenced by how things are going on the music side. If I've got a new track on the go, I'm the happiest guy around.

The look on Jack's face at 48:32 ... I think he's been taking the same improv class as Dave. :)
I'm glad I found this Chn Dave is SO kind to share his knowledge that is so rare to see people give back & of course unappreciated because it's free....oops well the new one was like $6 to watch NEVER seen that b4 on YT??! but other than that & thats not dave i bet. This is where you can pick up nuggets listen up to man who knows what he's say'n.
3:03 " me???" lolololol dave you are hilarious
Ah thanks for that man! :D I get it now :D
Have a reason for every decision: Mindful Mixing :)
the way he talk n his voice remind me of pharell haha
Does JJP Ever smile? :P Great interview!
Please Dave.. Where did you find that awesome studio chair??
@DatAnydeks

sleeplessingc it’s a Humanscale chair. About $3,000. I’m getting one.
you always gotta make sure you add the baby boost :)
ZERO dislikes, rock on guys! (and gals!)
Who is the Ron guy that they mention @ 31:00??
The whole Depression and Validation points are so true. I honestly believe the combo of those two have given me OCD. I love mixing, but it's torture at the same time. When it goes to plan, feel on top of the world, when you just can't make it sit right - feel useless. Im in a viscious cycle of templates at the moment. Each mix i do gets better and better - but because of that i find it absolutely impossible to finish a mix. Im sitting on 3-5 year old mixes..... that im still mixing. :(
What is the song called?
He wanted an 80s snare sound but not an 80s snare sound, his name is Tricky
46:46 "including the maid..." 😂
get Midi Mafia in for an episode!
@Richard James, cheer up Aphex!
Man, top engineers certainly do have a reverence for one another.

Joe Sepe Like CLA, who comes across as arrogant as it gets until he starts talking about Bob Clearmountain, then he's a 15 year old fanboy again.

22:55 CLA definitely does
Great stuff! But I would have expected he would have turned his phone off! ;-)
look at puigs shoes!lol
Thankyou for your good work Dave, Herb and the team. But Dave please, compare your processes with equal volume comparisons. anything you show us that increases in volume will be judged as sounding better regardless of what you've done or what point your trying to make. I'd hate to think of budding engineers copying these perfectly valid practices but completely missing the point.
Sorry what exactly are Recall notes??? tried googling but couldn't find anything. AMAZING video by the way! I'm so inspired to make and mix music right now :) If i ever need inspiration I just watch a Pensado video :D haha
I head downstairs to get some water, and come back to them still talking? Come on, guys! Start making out already! Jesus!
Who cares how many dislikes a video has? Means nothing.
so, don't compress for no reason, don't use reverbs for no reason, don't use EQs for no reason, don't compress the master fader for no reason.. Basically the guy who WON didn't do anything but GATE THE HELL out of everything, making it dry and clean as possible. Next time you do a mixing contest, tell us what you expect, so we'll know what to expect! Don't make us go for a specific sound, work on it, and then just rejectt it because you feel that track should sound the way you would do it.
All the more evidence of a program made by muso's for muso's!! we know nothing about video!
