I am forever reminding g her that people don't realize how hea y water is. That beach is a big open Ocean. There are signs everywhere warning of riptides, u dertows, rough seas and current. Different signs often say "no swimming" for those reasons. It looks so violent and I 'm worried about them getting swept in. They go to play in the sand and along the water line and sometimes up to their knees or waist. There are also signs sometimes warning of great whites spotted near shore. Going to the beach is dangerous. You should take basic lessons about Rip Tides with an instructor. Never fight the rip tide. Swim parallel to the shore in either direction. It won't be long before you are out of the Rip Tide itself. Then get out of the water. Watch the lifeguards station and it would be good if you had someone on shore watching you to alert the lifeguard if you get in trouble.

I swam in many places but never experienced the rip currents like I did when I swam in Daytona. I went out there when nobody else would because I was in great shape and figured I could handle it. I had a couple little grabs, and then one full-blown rip current that grabbed me good. I instinctively swam against it with all my might, at first, then realized, "oh, this is what they talked about when saying swim parallel, lol." I never had one bad enough that I couldn't outswim it or just go straight up to get out of it, before. I was nearly out of energy from the struggle, so I just held my breath and let it take me for a little ride. I ended up pretty far off the shore, but it was a relatively easy swim back, after it let me go. I even went back out there drunk at night to try it again. It was much easier when I knew what to expect, although I drank a little too much alcohol and/or salt water with those waves beating me around in the shallows. I had to give some back.

I wasn't looking for any because I had zero plans to go in the ocean but at the same time I didn't see any so that's my fault? I think life vests should be mandatory for everyone going in the ocean. I obviously know the risks and don't need a signage or flags. Surely they would not have disobeyed the flag and intentionally put themselves in harm's way or put themselves at risk of drowning. Don't have kids if you want to continue doing irresponsible things, so that you don't leave 1/2 dozen kids orphaned with old grandparents.

Red flag my ass! Just stay out of the ocean entirely! Have fun on the beach; go swim in the hotel/motel pool, but stay out of the ocean! You can't die from "Jaws" and you can't drown in a rip current if you ain't in the ocean.

I surfed for many years you never fight the current. Current runs parallel to beach go with it until it peters out.

@@cutesybunny3360 You go with the current either left or right. Most of the time you end up on the beach. I just float with it until it ebbs.

The ocean has no mercy! A swimming instructor told us, he said don't practice to swim in the ocean!

I’ve spent most of my life near the ocean. It is a very unforgiving environment and should be respects as such. I taught my kids about rip currents and what to do if they get caught in one. Thankfully they never had to use it.
