This is what I believe happened. Their assistant was walking around waiting and collecting the drawing. He gets a peak on one of the drawings and instead of having her put in the box, he grabs it and makes it appear to be put in the box. (He also is randomly grabbing cards and letting audience members put it in the box) At this point is either palming the drawing or putting it a secret compartment. While exchanging the box, the assistant slips the drawing and relays the info. "Think" is not the code word (too obvious) but the code word is buried within the patter.

Exactly , it could have been done in so many ways, probably the easiest one is for assistant just to use a slight of hand and pick out a flower drawing out of the box ( there's going to be at least one out of a 100 drawings), and using a slight of hand give it to him, and later when the wind machine starts, take it out of his sleeve. After that you can go at any pace that you'd like or do any dramatic effect that you prefer, it's all just acting skills from there on out... She clearly knew it was a flower but not it's shape, so there's that.

I think the opposite. I think they knew how it was done (in fact I know they did), but they wanted that act for their Vegas show. And it's not true that they don't like mentalists. they don't like mentalists who pretend to have real psychic abilities. Great act, by the way, Sentimentalists. You should construct a mind reading act around an Agatha Christie style whodunnit (your guy would make a great Poirot).

The Thumper sends vibration patterns to the receiver and can be interrupted through morse code. The sender can hide the sending device in shoes and they can tap their toe to send the message in morse code. I hope this was helpful 💖

I'll give it a shot. The assistant places a card in an easy to locate spot in the box. The guy takes the box, tucks the card in his sleeve with his left hand, and dumps the rest on the floor. While the cards are whirling in the air he pulls the card out of his left sleeve and looks at it under his nose using the fake blindfold. He then uses morse code to communicate the image to the girl, and we can see she begins drawing right away.

With my one guess I would say that one of the pieces of paper was removed from the box in advance, passed to the magician before he entered the booth and he used sleight of hand to give the illusion of taking it from the air. The fact that it was a flower could also have been communicated in advance to his partner. However they definitely fooled me with regards to how they manipulated Alison into saying Elvis. My only guess is they planned it with her before hand to distract Penn and Teller further.

There is bound to be a person(s) who will draw a flower. When the audience card collector spots a card with a flower he places the card in a location in the box that is easy to access and retrieved by the performer when he empties the box. This could be done by pushing the card sideways to make it stick to the lid. The performer retrieves the card from the box when he opens the box and palms it before exposing the card during the tumbling session...

Legitimately was my guess as well, I commented this above. But if you watch closely at 2:13 he reaches into his pocket. He is easily able to see under the blindfold with how it lays on the bridge of his nose. "Think" was a key word because of her smirk on her face the moment he said it. I think this was just palming a card from the box, looking under the "blindfold" and using word association tricks to guess. Like with "guess the celebrity" her mind immediately went to Elvis. It's a lot of working on 1 type of trick which makes this work so seamless.

  • @ddenuci

How could you possibly have a three word clue for every celebrity? She was given the opportunity to pick any celebrity living or dead. And then the woman (Steffi) adds that it could be a ficticious character as well. So it could have been Charlie Chaplin, Charlie Sheen, or Spiderman. Any one of a thousand possible choices. In fact, it could have been someone they never heard of (Alyson may be a Yankees fan and she could have said Phil Rizzuto). No, I don't think the Elvis portion of the trick is done with some form of word association. If you look carefully at 4:52 and maybe even go into slow motion viewing, you will see that he is likely using a camera pen to take a picture of the card. What I can't figure out is how the pic is transferred to Steffi. At 4:54 the pen is in his hand, but by 4:55, it's disappeared. Almost seems like the video may have been edited.

It's not the pen, I think it's his ring, have you noticed the ring on his left hand? It's so unusual, it's just black, doesn't seem to have any stone. I think the pen which was given to the audience and the one she used is also a special type of pen, maybe the nib has some vibrations which guides the movement of the pen to draw a certain pattern.

Mentalists use extremely detailed codes. I've seen Apollo Robbins demonstrating passing credit card number info without breaking normal speech. It's like card counting multiple decks. It's hard as heck, but people can do it. There is still a risk that everyone in the audience is a smart ass who picks things like Marvin Gaye or Tesla coil, but it's a risk you take.

My thought on this, if you watch closely at 2:13 he reaches into his pocket. You never see the inside of his right hand, and i noticed when get gets close to the box after he already has the blindfold he reaches for his right pocket on the outside. That could have been misdirection, but i think it was a pocket check. Because you never see the inside of his right hand after he puts the cards in the box.

The only time I got confused, was when the girl stood up,who did the flower. I go with: they took a complex flower drawing,so it's not exactly visible from the audience, ask "who drew this flower" and with that number of people there will be someone with a flower in the audience.

Trick is done the same way as the Elvis one in the end, which uses secret communication methods. One example could be Morse code being sent from the guy to the girl using something in the guy's shoe and the ring on the girl's hand. Watch where she places her thumb during the Elvis trick...it's right on top of the ring. Ring on middle finger on right hand is also a pretty odd location. Using this method you can send any message you want.

This is somewhat similar to what the Clairvoyant did in America's Got Talents. There are some sorts of communication methods the man uses to secretly "tell" the word to the woman (e.g: they can use vibrating devices in their shoes to transfer Morse code - or whatever code they want). At 2:23~2:26, we can see him trying to peek piece of paper he was holding, and the blindfold was probably just a gimmick which he can see through. After known the image, he just needed to "tell" her through the secret devices and that's it. Alison's word ("Elvis") is read exactly the same way.

Timperman you are overthinking it. The communication is not between the magician and her. Its between the paper collector and her. As he was walking up the stage with the box while his back was facing the audience, he could show one finger for flower, two for cat , three for dog....or as Lisa suggested, he said it quietly, and she read lips.

The first part was easy, you don't need a stooge or anything, just hide a card before hand and they both know which one it's gonna be. I'm not certain about the 2nd part but they've probably done research on Allison and he's code words would directly corresponds to the limited dozens of selections she would say.

I think the assistant looked in the audience for someone who drew a flower and communicated that to the guy. He held onto the flower pic (maybe under a flap in the box or something) and the guy held onto it up his sleeve or something all the time in the glass box until he 'catches' it. The lady knows it's going to be a flower so draws one. In case the assistant can't find a flower (possible) they may have codes for other common drawings, and the assistant can touch various fingers when he hands the box over and the guy can say different code words for the lady.

  • @Anathemata

3:16 Okay I'll bite. I think the trick starts as soon as he reveals it's a flower. She has no clue what the picture is until this moment, keep that in mind. She has one hand holding each side of the card. If you watch from the timestamp it appears she's doing something with her right hand as it's moved down to the bottom of the card from the right side of the card. Then when the camera comes back she drops her right hand to the side perhaps ditching whatever was used to draw with. It's unfortunate the camera cuts away when this is happening but I really see no other way this could be done. There I tried.

John Robertson That’s actually quite likely. Now that think about it, that’s a very classic method. You put a small piece pencil lead under your fingernail so that you can draw/write even after getting rid of the pencil. Which may be why Penn wanted to check her arms, but she could have thrown it easily and quietly.

  • @Anathemata

Seethi C Exactly. Penn looked at her hands but never actually said "I think that's how you did it". Instead they went somewhere else with their guess. I'm not cleaning to know shit about how this is actually done, but logic dictates that it actually began the second her looked at it in front of a live Audience and said it's a flower. That's my take anyway.

Secret communication, multiple outs, and slight of hand. Her pen and his bulky black ring are communication devices. At some point, he signaled her that it was a flower. She had "multiple outs", composed of common drawings. She used slight of hand to get rid of the outs, leaving only the flower. I suspect his mask allowed him to peak at the drawings so he could pick one of the outs he knows she had.

Flower is too common. They have a key word for 3-5 (or more) common paintings. He can see the pictures and pick the one he want, then he say the word or the phrase and the trick is done. 2:16 he can see and pick a picture that he have a phrase or word to say about it. e.g "Think"

  • @MikeL0084
    @MikeL00844 жыл бұрын

Pretty simple IMO. One of two ways - 90% of these drawings are usually simple so the odds are already in their favor for how this is pulled off as you'll read. Him grabbing/holding a bunch of the drawings and squeezing them around at 2:19 is him really trying to cover up the fact that he's peeking through the false blindfold at the one card he's already hanging onto. His words to her after this are code. (i.e. "Grabbing a bunch of them in my hands", "cut it"). He does this until he finds a drawing that's common enough with regards to the codes they've memorized. Second possible way is a small marker sort of thing inside her thumb nail where she begins drawing the MILLISECOND after he says flower. This way is very possible as at 3:46 you can see her thumb covering the last part of the drawing showing that she may not have finished in time. The Elvis thing is shoe morse code.

While not impossible, that flower looks to be too well done fo a freehand without a table or something hard to keep the card flat while drawing. As for the rest of the act, I agree with some of the guesses in this thread as to how it might have been done.

A lot has been said on this thread. I'll save you the trouble of reading through the comments: 1) The assistant who was collecting the cards may be where the trick happened. 2) Perhaps, the guy's blindfold wasn't really a blindfold. 3) Secret communication, multiple outs and sleight of hand (this seems to be the most plausible way). 4) There was a plant in the audience (not allowed on fool us). 5) Her reaction at the end was priceless. My thoughts: sucks that the producers will allow a trick that can be performed in multiple ways. Now, it isn't just a matter of them saying how the trick's done, it's a matter of guessing (and hoping to be right about) one of the myriad ways in which it could be done. Penn did seem a little agitated there towards the end. I'm sure he had a word with the producers afterwards.

  • @theBrightman

Many tricks can be performed multiple ways. Having only tricks that work one single way is ridiculous. One it'd be hard to actually enforce, and two it'd limit the performer's ability to fool them. I've seen quite a few where they clearly were making it look like certain methods were being used, and caught P&T out that way, and it was hilarious to watch, at least as someoen who understood the inside jokes and moves.

  • @whoddaya

True, but then, as I said, P&T should get more guesses. "Oh, you said I palmed it between my thumb and index finger, but I actually just placed it between the index and middle finger" etc is rather a cheap way to fool them. Not saying it's _always_ that extreme, but there's plenty of times when so was the case.

Virtually every trick can be performed multiple ways. Penn and Teller are not fans of magicians trying to pretend they're using a different method, but otherwise they're totally cool with it. Heck, the one guess rule is something they impose on themselves. Plus, they get a long time to think it through, it's slimmed down for TV. Finally, if they catch the general baseline of the trick and how it's done, it's enough for them to say they were not fooled. So technicalities usually don't count, unless the producers, who know the tricks beforehand, judge them to be essential to the trick.

  • @randomjunk1977
    @randomjunk1977 Жыл бұрын

This is a really tough one for P&T. As Penn somewhat alludes to, there's like a dozen ways this could be done without meaningfully changing the presentation and they prettt much have to guess. Still a good act regardless.

If I had to guess I'd say a flower is obviously going to happen at least once, so they pre-decide that she will draw a flower. The way she held the card she intentionally covered the stem, so that her catchall flower would look more like the one chosen. So how does he get the flower in the first place? Simply because the guy collecting the images is in on the trick, and he is able to manipulate the box / cards as people hand them in. He sets aside the closest flower he can find and then hands it to the lead magician while handing over the box, so he has it ready before he heads into the air chamber. Just a guess but I think likely how it works ...

Except, if you look at 1:26 - 1:28 you will see the male assistant does not get anywhere near the cards. The woman in the audience places her card into the box w/o any intervention from the male assistant. I think we have to assume that all the audience members did it this way. If would reflect poorly on the show if the trick happens off camera.
