Hi Dan, question for the next show: has any other NHL team previously and successfully walked the line Dubas is trying to walk. Rebuilding while simultaneously trying to be competitive?

@NobuhikuObayashi Dallas did, but their core pre-rebuild (benn & seguin) is 32 and 34 post rebuild. I'll rephrase as anyone done it well going from the old core to the next? At 37-38 our current core won't be here post rebuild.

@@TylerEL Well I just didn't think we'd be taking in cap dumps. That and we do not have a sufficient replacement for the Guentzel output. Buntings nice, but not at Guentzel level. Just don't like what this off seasons shaking up to be. Let's see what happens in FA.

@@eddiethepizzahero Yeah i get where you're coming from. I like the Kevin Hayes trade though because we got a second round pick for nothing but some cap, and we can try to move him for another pick at some point. Philly is covering half his cap for the 2 years. I think it's a nice move. I wasn't saying you were wrong though. I hated Jeff Carter, he gave no effort for the last 2 years. Except his last game where he was desperate to get a goal in his final game, he actually played in front the net for once to get that easy goal. Was pathetic.

@@user-cr4kl3uf5w A first lol. Lets not get too crazy. In the modern league it basically means that the Penguins will give them first crack at a player that the Pens want to trade anyway. if it was a pick they wouldn't have asked for futures, they would have just taken the pick now. It'll more or less be for nothing, but good point.

I have no issue if they dont qualify POJ but sign him for less than what a potential qualifier would be.

I would like the Hayes trade better if/once smith was/is traded. They need that $5M to be spent elsewhere.

I don't know Dubas' plan, is he trying to get better today or not? Because Eller is better option than Hayes, Smith is also better option than Hayes. Hayes has gotten softer as he has gotten older. Acciari brings more to the PK than Hayes.....if this move was just to get a 2nd rounder. Then for the sake of a draft pick your team is worse off today. I've commented before, but I have never liked the way Dubas builds a team, just a lack of ability to build a bottom 6 in a manner that actually works..Toronto with all its top end talent had a horrible bottom 6, and it wasn't because Dubas didn't make moves...he just never made the right one.

Dubas is no Craig Patrick nor Jim Rutherford. He is a middling GM who isn't the genius those two are. He's not Ray Shero either. He's been around enough to judge his work. And it's not Cups.... Yeah he got rid of some of Hextalls bad contracts but then he goes out and adds his own. Smith? Graves? Even Karlson... gave up a first round pick for a guy that resulted in the power play being worse... and he's on the wrong side of 30 to boot...now he adds this bum to get a 2nd round pick... How about not giving up your first round this year for Karlson? Crosby can keep his ass there I guess until he's done.. but there's not much to like about Dubas.

It has been maddening to get excited over clearing cap space even if you have to lose good players, only to see the team not getting better at all. These past two years in particular have really stung. I guess this is more about the pick (though I don't have much faith in drafting/development or management of assets), but Hayes...

Dude I've been saying this since he was hired. As someone living in Toronto I've seen Dubas' MO....and he is doing the same here in Pittsburgh...and people pump his tires like he is a genius. He has shown no ability to construct a roster that wins. Horrible judge of talent in net, poor bottom 6 construction, and bad decision making on the back end. I hated that Pittsburgh hired him and gave him all the power in the world after 5 years of bring in the NHL with nothing to show for it. Dan Kingreski said don't over react on dubas, but this isn't an over reaction....if you follow his line of work you will react the same way. There is a reason fans and media in Toronto have to place or space for Dubas

@@maczed31 I didn't buy the wunderkind hype then, and even less, now. Fans kept being told "There's lots more hockey left!" when frustrated with losses and wasting more precious time, with a healthy Crosby, then it became "It's like the fans want the team to lose!" Very silly stuff.
