In this video, we are counting down the top 10 facts about the Pembroke Welsh Corgis that you might not know.
A Quick Overview:
Group: Herding Dogs
Weight: 25 to 30 pounds
Height: 10 to 12 inches tall at the shoulder
Life Expectancy: 12 to 14 years
Originating in Pembrokeshire, Wales, the Pembroke Welsh Corgi is an enchanting dog whose background is steeped in folklore. According to Welsh legend, the Pembroke Welsh Corgi sprang from the lairs of fairies and elves! As proof that Pembrokes were indeed the mounts of fairies, the parents pointed to the marks on their backs where the fairy saddle had been placed on their shoulders. The children were delighted and cherished their pups. As they grew, the dogs became treasured companions and learned to help the children take care of the family's cattle.
Although Pembrokes are still used as working dogs, they are most often seen as family pets these days. They are known for being happy, loving, and intelligent, but with a stubborn or independent streak at times. They are easy to train but don't expect your Pembroke to be subservient. They like to think for themselves. Although they want to please their owners, food is a great motivator for them when training. Proceed with caution: Pembrokes love to eat and can become obese if their food intake isn't moderated.
Pembrokes also make good watchdogs. They can be suspicious of strangers and will be quick to bark if they feel that something or someone is threatening their home and family. Like every dog, the Pembroke needs early socialization - exposure to many different people, sights, sounds, and experiences - when they're young. Socialization helps ensure that your Pembroke puppy grows up to be a well-rounded dog.

I always wanted a corgi since I was young after I met my neighbors corgi. When I was 15, I got my first dog from a breeder. I raised my little corgi from a puppy to an adult dog. Hes 6 now, and I must say I will never get a different breed of dog in my lifetime. Yes they shed and bark, but they are such wonderful and characterful animals. My corgi and I are inseparable. If anyone out there is considering getting a corgi, do it, you will not regret your decision!

My current pair turned ten this year (different litters) and I'm so not looking forward to losing them. But as a friend once told me " When they pass is when you pay the bill for all the years of love." They count on you being with them when they go. It breaks my heart when someone wimps out on their old pets and refuses to be with them when they pass on.

I have an elderly beloved Corgi, definitely a Pembroke, but he has a beautiful tail that I just love. He is now 14, has developed hearing loss, cataracts, and mobility issues this last year, but still manages very well. He can still run although not as far is as long, and use stairs but with difficulty. He is my emotional support animal, and it's going to be very difficult for me when his time comes. I am now elderly myself, though active and healthy. But not sure I'm up to starting over with a new energetic Corgi after he goes. Vet thinks he's got another year or two yet, fortunately.

Ive had several pairs of pems and my one caution is, the pem is not what I recomend as a good first dog as they can easily outsmart a new dog owner. I currently have a female who was returned to the breeder as she took over the house, bit someone and caused all sorts of havoc. Yes, first dog they ever owned. However, if you have had dogs and know how to be the pack leader there is nothing better. No other breed, I have had a wide variety, is as smart, jovial, kind and loving as a pembroke. Have had cardigans in the house too and they tend to be more a one person dog. I love the gregarious nature of pems. My current pair like nothing better than to meet new people and be utterly charming.

Easily attack a Doberman who was pooping in his territory he jumped a four foot fence to get st the Doberman sliding under its throat the Doberman took off pursued by my corgi. I got ahold of the little screwball and told its owner don’t come back my corgi will kill your Doberman. He weighed above forty pounds. He was. Good friend. I am always amazed by their courage. I was once extolling the virtues of the breed to a real cattle handling cowboy and he was amazed when I told him they can and do herd cattle. I said yeah, they have a lot of attitude. His answer was "if you're asking a 30 pound dog to herd a 3,000 pound cow he better have an attitude!".

Looks like they evolved over the years---the earlier photos, like the ones that Queen Elizabeth had as a child, look more like Swedish Vallhunds---a little taller, rougher coat, and more of a solid brown colour. Seems like they've become more distinct and refined in their appearance. Am I wrong?

If I have one piece of advice it is *never* buy a corgi (or indeed any pet) on the internet. Go to a recognised breeder and see the mother with the pups. You'll pay more but you'll have a much better idea about the dog & it's welfare. The breeder will answer all your questions and they'll also get a fair idea of the person you are and whether you're sufficiently prepared to take on the responsibilities of dog ownership.

Actually back in the early days some were born without tails. The docking continued because they were everything dogs, herding, ratting, droving. The breed was used to do everything because their people were at starvation level and could only afford to keep a thrifty dog. That lovey luxuriant tail they grow was dangerous to the dog under many of those circumstances. Don't be hating the people who needed them to work and not be injured. It is becoming less prevalent to dock a tail here in the US too. The showing by laws have changed so undocked tails are now accepted. Give it time, it will go away.
