Peloton Tread Review: Still worth it?

Спорт

There's no deeper review of the Peloton Tread than this (latest 2021/2022 edition). I cover everything from the hardware to software, screen wobble to accuracy, and even a geek section. Everything from how the treadmill feels to run on it, the specs of the hardware as well as a deep-dive into all the software and Peloton platform options. Ultimately, to find out - is it worth the $2,500 pricetag?

    Thank you so much for this review! Since the pandemic I got into the Peloton workout community and never looked back. I started with the Bike + and it’s been a year and a half since I had it and it’s been great! Love the cycling , yoga, strength and HITT classes! They have been great, I’m looking into a treadmill since they are doing promotion now. Thanks for the review again!

I would love to get a treadmill but maybe I'll save that until I have an offsite cave of my own some day. I agree with you on the rain. Nice review! And that shirt is awesome! That's weird about the stryd though on the incline. Wouldn't the indoor mode just negate looking at altitude?

  • @Dcrainmaker

    @Dcrainmaker

    2 жыл бұрын

    Yeah, it makes sense technically, which is why Stryd launched their new indoor mode. But in that case, you've basically got to manage two screen touches now (once for whatever app/treadmill your using to change incline), and then again for the Stryd app itself. That's just a bit too much unless we're talking a relatively constant workout.

    Another great soup to nuts (or in your case Haribo) review! Am I correct that somewhere you said you were able to hook this up to Swift? Maybe using the NPE Runn? If so, what was your setup like and was it worth it?

  • @Dcrainmaker

    @Dcrainmaker

    2 жыл бұрын

    Correct, you can use it with Zwift (in my written review linked above I show that in a bit more detail), but you do have to use NPE RUNN or a footpod like Stryd. In that case, it's a perfectly good treadmill, but probably overkill (assuming you don't pay the monthly). I know some people that do that, purely because they like the style or build quality of the Peloton Tread (I personally find most other treadmills except the TechnoGym MyRun to be super-dated in appearance).

  • @RBFooty1024

    Any suggestions for the best treadmill for interval training?

  • @TimGrose
    @TimGrose2 жыл бұрын

    Good to see this. As you may recall, I come in just over the suggested height range at 1.95m or 6'5". Maybe 2.00m in the Prime X or Alphafly trainers :) Comparing you and the B-roll footage the "problem" (as I often have at gyms) seems to be that the screen is way too low for a "tall" person and I would be kind of running "bent over" looking at it. Doesn't look that great for you either but presume you are OK with that? As a Zwift "fan" this does look a total non starter for a treadmill for that and anyway I have one of a similar price (Technogym MYRUN) and seeming specs like top speed that does fully "connect" with Zwift. Always wondered though whether the Peloton app would give a reasonable experience on your own treadmill ? And yeah we in the UK had similar "horizontal" rain last night so was on my treadmill for similar reasons.

  • @Dcrainmaker

    @Dcrainmaker

    2 жыл бұрын

    It's funny, it's not something I noticed until I was looking at footage of myself, and then I was like "Huh, I look really tall compared to it". But I think in general, most treadmills that have attached screens/displays tend to have them lower. As the higher up you get, the more wobble you get. Obviously, if you attach a TV to a wall that problem disappears. But in terms of my usage, it never actually bothered me, or that I even noticed it. As for the Peloton app on your own treadmill, the huge gap is that you can't connect to a footpod for it, so...you're left without any data recording except HR. Oh, and the rain video snippets? Shot last night. :)

Ideally four customizable buttons: A) One for my I'm dying and need to slow-walk recovery B) Easy-long run pace for interval recovery C) Modest tempo run pace D) To the max pace.

    I watched them deliver and assemble mine and yes, it does come apart. The entire vertical portion is attached with I believe 8 bolts (4 on each side) and then a wiring harness. You could also detach the screen to make it fit better in your vehicle. Note of caution, the entire thing weighs about 300 pounds and required 2 guys with a special carrying harness just to bring the base in to my house.

    2 жыл бұрын

    Yeah, it's tricky. I added KPH/MPH in all situations where I was talking about pace, but in the case of Peloton, they actually don't show KPH anywhere. The speeds (0-12.5) are indeed MPH, but they never say the words "miles per hour", and even if you switch it to metric (which is what you see on my screen), it doesn't show KPH. It kinda makes sense, they just treat the speed as a simple scale - that way they never have to deal with paces or KPH/MPH, and it oddly works for everyone, since virtually no runners ever use MPH/KPH anyways - they use Pace (e.g. minutes/mile or minutes/kilometer). Hopefully that wasn't too confusing...

    While I highly doubt Peloton will be going bankrupt anytime soon (they do have millions of paying users and someone would find that appealing to purchase) we made the decision to go with higher end equipment that is not platform dependent (e.g. bought a Keiser M3i spin bike instead of the Peloton bike, etc...) which allows for more freedom of use (away from just Peloton classes). Now you will not get the depth of metrics on your screen (there are cures for that ill though, for spin biking MPaceline does the trick), but for us that wasn't a deciding factor. We do have friends that have Peloton branded equipment and they swear by it, but for us the latitude to use outside platforms was the determining factor. All IMHO and YMMV 🤷🏽‍♂️

  • @Dcrainmaker

    @Dcrainmaker

    2 жыл бұрын

    Haha... Yeah, it'll be interesting to see over the coming months if they change pricing at all. At this point, on paper at least, there's no reason to. They added 300K hardware subscribers last quarter (same as always), so clearly units are selling. But we have seen them lower the price of their base Bike, to be more competitive. Their new CEO also mentioned just yesterday or the day prior that they're lookin at re-working some of the subscription pieces. It's unclear what that means though. Their main issues lately financially has been faaaaaar to many employees/costs, which, they obviously changed course on. That's a massive budget line item pile of an estimated $800m/year, which is insane. Of course, it's easy to play Monday morning quarterbacking on over-supply, when every other company in the world is suffering with under-supply.

    Because practically speaking, delivery services in the EU tend to be country specific when it comes to freight services with in-home delivery. Meaning, they install it in your house. I think that the engine is too weak. Also endurance athletes do shorter intervals like 200s and then there is NOT enough speed in that machine. For some of my faster friends that top speed would be roughly the 10K pace which isn't very fast at all.

    Yup, as noted in the video, if you're a short-course person primarily racing at very fast speeds, it won't work as well there. 200's are tough on this machine for me, but that's OK, for winter base work I can do other stuff.

And quite a many people spend more time on a treadmill than in a car. If you buy a mill once, it basically lasts for a lifetime. Houses cost a lot, it's peanuts to add stuff like a treadmill when they get a mortgage with basically 0 percent interest anyway. Btw, 98 percent of people are irrelevant in everything in life. @@Dcrainmaker Mea culpa. I looked at and sped through your video as I was about to begin work, that dirty 4 letter word. Aside from the safety issues with the now "basically discontinued" model, though I don't know what that mean, as it's either discontinued or it isn't, it was handled so poorly by Peloton who "basically" denied there was anything wrong before admitting there was and recalling it, that they deserve no one's business for the Tread. Again, all that said, I felt it was poor quality for the cost. The entire unit shook and vibrated when I ran at 6 mph, and I weigh about 200 pounds. I'm awaiting delivery of the real deal Woodway. Takes 6 months from order to delivery at the current time.

    @@mdjak3686 Yup, that's the original slate-Tread. I hated running on it too. I say "basically discontinued" because technically speaking they've deferred reentry to service post-recall on that model. However, it's been almost a year, and they recently noted in a leaked memo there are no current plans to reintroduce it. So officially it's not dead, but unofficially it is. As for the safety aspects, unfortunately, as easy as it is to whack Peloton on this one (and we still can), this same child-safety issue actually exists with countless treadmills and weight. If you haven't seen the CPSC video, I'd highly recommend it. And then, you can find the same thing occurring on KZread with some easy searches (showing it pulling in objects under it). I can even easily replicate the issue on my old ProForm treadmill. And sadly, this was not the only child killed by a treadmill (and the other known cases weren't Peloton either).
