Peloton Tread Review: beyond the drama

Ғылым және технология

While Peloton’s been in the news lately for its corporate missteps, the Peloton Tread is a stellar piece of equipment. But is a good product enough to pull a company back from the brink?

Make a rowing machine Pelton you are on "the verge" of bankruptcy (good joke here) The bike and treadmill are good products, but the bikes are not keeping customers engaged for years (canclled memrships). The treadmill could, and so can the rowing machine they need to make And they need to allow any heart rate monitor and smart watch works with their closed ecosystem. And the rowing machine better be a good price

My mom seems to be very into yoga classes. So if you are already an active person, good for you, maybe you don't need this, but for me, this is a product that I would buy in the future because I can use the same subscription for multiple devices.

Peloton should definitely dip its toes into opening up brick and mortar gyms with their equipment inside the gyms. That way you pay a membership to go to the gym, use the equipment and don’t have to have it in your house. Let’s face it, most of us don’t have the space for these things in our homes. I would 100% sign up to go to a gym that had their equipment with their classes available on them.

Great presentation style and the "review + company history overview/context" script is so so good. Assuming the classes are about on par, why would anyone go for the peloton over a regular treadmill + iPad and Watch with Fitness+? You even get an iPad and Apple Watch out of it and it's still cheaper even in the short term.

Hey Daniel! Great question. The official range Peloton gives for the Tread is heights of 4'11 to 6'4, and weights ranging between 105 and 300lbs. Obviously, I'm a whole foot shorter than you but there was one thing that I noticed w/ the Tread that might be tough for taller people: the tray. Classes often ask you to do high knees as part of a warmup and once or twice I knocked a knee into it. I can only imagine that's more likely for taller people.

Ive been on the verge of ordering a Peleton and I was looking once again this morning. This was a very informative review and much appreciated. Is there any way to "jailbreak" the device without compromising the system? I like the idea of the instructors and trail system videos of hiking, but I certainly don't want locked into only Pelotons feeds. Is there another brand that is similar construction that will let you jump into your own material and still offer the monthly fees for their classes and software?

I have a bike plus that I share with my partner. Before I bought it, I looked up if you could watch different apps and stuff and you can but it messes up the entire peloton system according to what I found. If you don’t want to always see the peloton content then you could have a TV in the same room or go with a different bike. I will say that I love the bike and the content because it pushes me harder than I would by myself. There is a huge range of instructors and they always have stories to tell during the classes. My fiancé and I really like it and use it 3-5 times a week for each of us separately so it’s worth it for us because we don’t like going to gyms and the one subscription can be used for multiple people in a household. Sorry if it’s a long reply but I hope it helps.

$3000 just to be able to run? I wonder what's going on in those product design meetings. Those people are absolutely out of their minds. Running enthusiasts won't need such a product. Many beginners won't be able to afford such a device. So you're left with people with enough free cash and just need that little bit of encouragement. This greatly narrows down your target audience. Plus with $40 a month subscription fee, most people will just sign up a gym membership, which again reduces your potential client count. I guess the market research was largely bloated by COVID situations where people had no choice but to stay at home. But now with things slowly going back to normal, they're left with a stupid price tag and unrealistic business goals. I think it's my wallet talking now, but no thanks. Great review though.

Zwift software uses open-standard sensors so my hand-me-down Carl Lewis treadmill works with the addition of a £70 belt sensor and an existing Garmin watch. $2.8k for a shacked Android tablet? Nope! Zwift running isn't as good as Zwift cycling, as a bike smart trainer (e.g. Tacx or Wahoo) is even better as you use a real bike that fits you, not a bed frame. Don't like Zwift? Try Trainer Road, Sufferfest, and many others using the SAME open hardware.

$40 is way too much especially with the cost of the treadmill. They should move to a tier membership for those videos. Start at $5 essential plan with Ads before and after each workout, or during the workout to really make them upgrade. $10 for without ads, and $25 for a plus membership that will get new content a year before everyone else. $40 tier should have LIVE classes, maybe 2-3 times a week. You sign up for each classes so the teachers can personalize the experience, etc.

We had been mulling over the idea of getting a treadmill but i'll likely steer clear of peloton until they can figure things out. As you said, their main products are the classes, yeah selling hardware can make you a bit more money but think how many more subscriptions they'd have if they just opened it up to everyone regardless of the hardware used.

OK I saw a video where a child got hurt by the first treadmill and honestly, despite the bad design, the equipment is just a contributing factor to parental negligence. They leave two 3-4 year olds alone to play with a running treadmill, and the 3yo literally shoves his arms under there, then gets pulled in. I'm not victim blaming the child, I AM victim blaming the parents. Easy solution to all this: go running outside. Cheaper, less boring, saves space.

I have the original treadmill plus. I would NEVER buy the tread. The old style tread is gross. The track on the plus is MUCH better. If people weren't reckless with the plus they would have kept that which was a VASTLY better tread.

if people are smart, they would stay away from Peloton. When the company goes belly up or they decide to hike up the membership, you'll have a regular treadmill thats not worth 3k

If I cannot use the screen other than peloton’s, it’s a no for me. I wish they will allow streaming content like netflix, amazon, or apple tv. Such a beautiful and big screen that can only do one trick. I think they are limiting themselves from other buyers.

I knew I wasn't going to like this treadmill, because I don't like the company, but the new host Victoria is amazing. She even sold that inevitable joke at the end I saw a mile away.

Quick note about the setup where this was filmed - the product is black, the reviewer is wearing black - it doesn't make sense to film this in a dark room. It was hard to see how the product actually looked like.

I seriously considered buying a peleton bike but the subscription was a deal breaker. If it was free for a year or you could use the screen to watch other things I would’ve probably made the purchase.

Trust me , the target audience this machine is made for is a fitness center , not an individual. Why would an individual user want to spend that much money on a closed-ecosystem, single-purposed fitness machine like a treadmill or a rowing machine ? You could have achieved the fitness purpose for sooooo much more by visiting a fitness center - 1) more different machines , 2) social life with people there, 3) distinct switch from work mode to exercise mode by location change, 4) much less upfront cost , 5) cancel subscription fee if you no longer want to go to gym 6) watch Netflix on your iPad during exercises The list goes on and on . It's head scratching business model if it is designed to attract individual customer.

Scott Galloway has been predicting for months now that Apple will acquire Peloton. After getting a glimpse of this I can see why he might say that. It’s still absurdly expensive and not that valuable from an exercise perspective. It’s in Apple’s ethos, but it’s just so eye-wateringly expensive that I can’t see why anyone would buy one.

Do not buy a treadmill from Peloton. They won’t deliver it. I bought it and they no showed me mulitple times. No email, call or text. Local store said they couldn’t help me. Finally gave up and cancelled order. Crazy that I literally tried to buy one and they wouldn’t deliver it.
