Peloton Beginner's Guide | Setup, What to Expect, Results, Referral Program, Bike Alternatives, FAQs

Today’s video is in my opinion, everything you need to know before purchasing a Peloton… is it worth it? What is my experience? Do I recommend it? Are there alternatives? What are factors to consider before purchasing? I will address all of these questions and more in this video.

I’ve owned the Peloton for almost a year, since receiving it in January of 2020. Three weeks into owning it, I uploaded my first Peloton video and from there on out, my channel evolved into a fitness/lifestyle channel. I’ve since made update videos as well as covered topics in the indoor, at-home fitness space.
Peloton Bike Options:
Original Bike $1,895
Bike+ $2,495
Tread+ $4,295
NEW Tread (release date 3/31/21 in US) $2,495
If you own a Peloton their membership is $39.99/mos; if you use an app with a non-Peloton bike it's $12.99/mos. $39/mos may seem pricey, but try to consider if you were to spend that on a gym membership elsewhere, where they are a minimum $50/mos. For those who are interested in a payment plan for their bikes, they have a $49/month for the original bike. If you were to combine that price with the $39/mos, that brings you to $88/mos, which could be considered the alternative for an outside gym plan.
Also, consider if you ride the bike an obtainable 4x per week, or 16 rides per month; and at a price of $34/class at Soul Cycle, that would have equated to $544/month. That is 14x more expensive than than Peloton’s membership of $39/month.
What to Expect When you Order
- White glove setup
- Buy shoes + cleats or different brand from Amazon amzn.to/3fkurMI
- Create username/ login ahead of time. You can have multiple usernames under a single account, one for every member in your household
- Purchase an equipment mat ahead of time amzn.to/3aPkuEa
Peloton Bike Alternatives
- Direct comparisons
- Nordictrack S22i amzn.to/2yRNAW3
- Echelon Ex5 amzn.to/3ibItTd Available in-store at Costco for $999 ($600 less than if you purchase it from Costco online)
- Budget
- Yosuda amzn.to/2MZzJ7n
- Sunny amzn.to/2LH7qd0
Referral Program
Peloton account holders may refer up to 12 members a year with their unique code shared to friends & family which will get them AND the recipient $100 worth of Peloton accessories for free. That’s up to $1,200 per year that you can receive AND give out. The only caveat is that it must be friends & family and not shared on a public site such as KZread, Reddit, online forums, etc.
Bike Setup
- Clipping in (13:40) and clipping out (14:16); takes a few times to get the hang of it
- Seat height: top of hip, don’t want it too low/too high
- Degree of float - amount of lateral rotation: Slight float on cleats so when you pedal, your knee has some leeway left and ride (not 100% facing forward, unnatural and uncomfortable. Also helps with clipping in/out as you have to rotate your foot to do so.)
If you find the seat uncomfortable, padded bike shorts do exist but traditionally they’re reserved for road bikes (no judgement tho). I’d recommend a padded bike seat cover, option from Marque on Amazon for around $15. amzn.to/3iMHloV
Heart rate monitor (or Apple Watch) to track your progress, if you want to cast your metrics onto the bike screen, there’s a product that can do it for you. With Watchlink (watchlink.app.link/e/christin..., it links via bluetooth to your Apple Watch and peloton, displaying your heart rate onto the bike. Use code “ChristinaMarie” for 10% off your order.
A few other accessories to consider…
- Tower fan you can point directly towards you during your ride
- Laptop table for bike
- Headphones (if you want a “surround sound” type experience)

Awesome and very informative. I have been eyeing the Peloton for a while now. I just need to convince my wife in getting one. lol I am hearing the horror stories of how long it is taking for delivery and some people have problems with the bike upon delivery or a week or two in. I am glad you enjoy your bike. Did you finance? I was thinking about that c due to 0% APR, cant go wrong there. Great video. Love your fur babies.

Thanks for watching! No, I didn’t finance the bike, but it’s not bad of an option if you like to space out the payments. And yes I hear those horror stories too, the wait times are all over the place. For some it arrives moderately quickly and others they keep getting rescheduled. I hope Peloton is able to sort that out soon as it’s poor PR for their brand in the meantime!

I just ordered my bike last week. I'm so excited to get it! Thanks for the informative video. I did have 2 questions though: 1) I don't have an Apple watch so how do you link a different heart rate monitor to the bike? 2) I know the Peloton has Spotify integration so if you like a song during a class you can add it to your Spotify playlist but do you know if you can listen to your own Spotify music while doing a scenic ride?

It’s the amount of lateral rotation on your cleats! It can be adjusted by tightening or loosening the bolts on the cleats. For mine, since I off mount with my right foot first, I have it looser on that side.

now the fact that its £39 a month for UK, that is very expensive for 1 person. when the cheapest gym is £15 it may be cheaper than USA gyms but I can not see people in the UK paying £20 for just one class like the class you said in the video. no one here would pay that much just for 1 class. the peloton app is better value. but for 1 person the £39 is just not worth it. for use of only 1 piece of equipment. if you look at yoga then you need yoga equipment. to do running / Walking then you need a treadmill. so you have to add more equipment there for more money. if you have space and lots of home equipment then the app is fine, it does not include a number of things.
