Pelé was a Brazilian professional footballer who played as a forward. Widely regarded as one of the greatest players of all time, he was among the most successful and popular sports figures of the 20th century.
Pelé started playing for Santos at age 15 and the Brazil national team at age 16. At club level, he is Santos's all time top scorer with 643 goals in 659 games. In the golden era of Santos, he led the club to win the Copa Libertadores and Intercontinental Cup in 1962 and 1963.
Pelé played for Brazil and during his international career, he won three FIFA World Cups: in 1958, 1962 and 1970, the only player to do so and the youngest player to win a World Cup at age 17. He was nicknamed The King (O Rei) following the 1958 World Cup. With 77 goals in 92 games for Brazil, Pelé had the record as the national team's top scorer for over fifty years.
In 1999, he was named Athlete of the Century by the International Olympic Committee and was included in the Time list of the 100 most important people of the 20th century. In 2000, Pelé was one of the two joint winners of the FIFA Player of the Century and also won an Honorary Ballon d'Or. His 1279 goals in 1363 games, which includes friendlies, is recognised as a Guinness World Record.
Diego Maradona was an Argentinian professional football player, widely regarded as one of the greatest players in the history of the sport.
He played for Argentinos Juniors, Boca Juniors, Barcelona, Napoli, Sevilla, and Newell's Old Boys during his club career. His time at Napoli was the most prolific, there he won the most trophies and led the club to win the Serie A title twice. An advanced playmaker who operated in the classic number 10 position, Maradona's vision, passing, ball control, and dribbling skills were incredible. Maradona was the first player to set the world record transfer fee twice: the first time when he transferred to Barcelona for £5 million, and the second time when he transferred to Napoli for £6.9 million.
Maradona played for Argentina where he scored 34 goals in 91 matches. He played in four FIFA World Cups, including the 1986 World Cup in Mexico, where he led Argentina to victory over West Germany in the final. He also won the Golden Ball as the tournament's best player.
Maradona was one of the two joint winners of the FIFA Player of the 20th Century and also won an Honorary Ballon d'Or.
