Pectus Excavatum and the Nuss Procedure

Pectus Excavatum is a congenital condition that affects the sternum and ribcage which makes the center of the chest curve inward. At Children's Hospital Colorado, we offer the Nuss Bar procedure, a minimally invasive surgery, which can restore volume to the chest, and increase heart and lung capacity. Learn more about the Nuss procedure in this animation, including how the surgery is performed and what to expect from recovery.

I was born with that condition and suffered from low selfesteem as well as from endurance issues like short breath and passing out while running. Doctors always told me "we don't recommend surgery since it is a huge medical intervention". Kept on struggling until I was 26. Then I eventually stumbled across a "new method" which was only practised by a few doctors here in Germany at that time. Got the surgery done and, apart from the the pain that became my companion for many months, I felt such a relief! A few weeks out of the hospital I put my endurance to a test and went for a run - 8 kilometers without passing out where I hardly managed to run 1 kilometer before. I'm 44 now and never regret it. I transformed me into a new person.

For anyone wondering. I had the surgery done 6 months ago. I’m 17 so that’s usually the cutoff. I’ve had it my entire life and it was something I was self conscious about. The Haller index was 7.1 so you can image how deep it was. They had to put in two bars and I had to go back into surgery because they messed it up the first time. I’m fine now and I accept how I look. It will not immediately fix everything about your chest and body. Now that I am able to I have been working out 5 days a week. Im getting better. I recommend getting the surgery if yours is as severe as mine. Im glad I did it. I don’t think it wouldn’t been possible to fix naturally. For me it was a lot of pain. I woke up as soon as they were done and starting rolling me into the room. It is a lot of pain. So just be ready for that. You will be okay tho.

I'm 15, just had mine a week ago. Pain sucks and I only got one bar. I am writing this in bed and staying home from school. I have never really been self-conscious about my chest until about a year ago one of my friends pointed it out while we were in the pool. Seeing the change after the surgery opened my eyes to how bad it was. If anyone is reading this, the pain I'm feeling now is temporary, but I won't be self-conscious about it for the rest of my life. Reject weakness and embrace discipline!

my family never made me feel different. Only realizing it could actually hurt your cardio and breathing.. i seriously was never aware people had stigma towards this.. I never tried to hide it or even considered it, i wonder now if it freaks people out when they see it for the first time. The way your family treats you can totally save you from so much. I'm grateful I had a circle of good people around me because I'm really shocked most people in the comments felt judged and insecure about it. I personally like the appearance and felt unique for it cause I was the only one of my siblings who had it, but I'm disappointed it could harm my lungs' capacity and heart, i hope my case is mild and can be compensated for by exercise. By the way, beauty standards will always change, I know it's difficult with all the shallowness in the media/schools/everywhere, but try to form your own standards as much as you can, change your circle if your current one is judgmental or shallow, have some independent thinkers around, you don't wanna be run by sheep, it's ironic i know! but beauty was never objective nor will it ever be if history is a decent indicator of the future.

I think the number was a bit high because i purposefully didn't breathe in all the way during the ct scan (the higher fhe index the more likely i thought it was to be covered by insurance lol) because i assumed I'd be right around that 3.4 where surgery is covered. Turns out im past that by a decent margin. Id assume in a more legit scan I'd score like a 6 tho

Yeah only my closest friends and family know I’ve got this... I’ve had friends take the piss and make me feel really embarrassed at times... luckily not so much now. I feel I can hide it well, but again depending on clothes and I try change my posture a lot and fold my arms to hide it (which I don’t think the posture thing is good for my back) 🤦‍♂️ but again there could be worse things in life. We are not alone which is comforting reading some of these comments. 😏

I was born with funnel chest and if there’s a girl who’s done this surgery, PLEASE reply (I’m 17)❤️

Because of the coronavirus, I might not be able to get the surgery for another year (Because recovery can take a month or two and I would hate to be out of school that long). I have a moderate case of it and both my brothers have it very mildly. I used to be self conscious about it, but more so about my flared ribs; I find that good posture and puffing my chest out some helps when I take my shirt off. I have to train twice the amount on my chest with weights to make the pectus not as noticeable and I do a lot of rib flare exercises, they actually work! Remember you won’t be as judged as much as you judge yourself, stay dedicated!

Guys, we don’t need to be insecure about this. It makes us even more unique. Just jokingly tell people that you got punched really hard. They’ll laugh and you’ll laugh and they won’t think much of it. As long as it doesn’t affect your breathing or other functions, I think surgery isn’t necessary. I’m 17 now and noticed this when I was about 13. At first I was insecure but then I realized that I could either accept it and make the best out of it or dwell on it and stay insecure. Embrace it, guys.

My surgery is scheduled for the 31st of this month (Jan 31 2020) I knew 6 month in advance (since June 2019) that I would get surgery. I decided to push myself and see how much I could grow before then so during these last 6 months I started dieting, eating a lot of healthy calories, emphasizing on protein, also taking a mass gainer almost daily (serious mass is the name) and gyming at least 3 days a week and I am now 140 pounds. 30 pounds in 5 months... could have been more if I truly pushed myself and didn’t slack here and there but... now ima have surgery and I know once I recover I’ll be capable of even more... but yes u can gain mass it’s just tough man. I found out I had this when I went to a doctor. I asked about the surgery and he explained it to me and said it can be dangerous. He said that some kid did the surgery and the bar hit his heart. I don’t have a severe case, I have a a small cave inwards. Does anyone know what are the chances of a surgery going bad or if it’s common with this type of surgery?

I got an operation years ago, on the NHS. Stigma was probably less as I'm a guy, but was still really depressing. Go to your GP and explain how down it makes you feel, they should do it, you'll just have to wait on the list a while. My operation was over 20 years ago, so things were a bit different. Good luck

Look into it. Maybe just go in for a consultation. I spent 18 years thinking that EVEN IF there was a surgical fix, it would be plastic surgery and therefore paid out of pocket. A few months ago i met w a specialist, and almost immediately he confirmed insurance would cover it. Its like 65k total but less rhan 2 thousand after insurance (around 1k for us because we have rlly good insurance). Even if it doesn't go through, might as well try. Everyone deserves to feel confident
