Not just the energy, as Jac iron or Matt Cameron do have tons of it. But Dave could switch from hard hitting to soft fills in a snap. Making the whole songs more dynamic. The band envisioned themselves as a more punkish band, so Dave did not fit, as he is clearly more on the veins of Prog drummers ( ok ok not as technic )

It was the bands choice. Here’s a post that I made about it, at the time. I emailed the person in charge of the rock ‘n’ roll Hall of Fame and she actually gave me a reply. The blood is on the band’s hands, not the Hall’s. = “Dave Abbruzzese wasn't invited to the Rock and Roll HOF ceremony...SMFH Pearl Jam has always, and probably will always be, my all-time favorite band. Changed my life almost instantly and forever. And tonight, I'm disgusted with them. (Anyone claiming that the RRHOF decides who gets in can read the assoc. curator's reply to my plea-for-Dave email which stated: "The Hall of Fame Foundation and founding members of the bands being inducted work together to choose which individuals are inducted..." It's not unilateral) It seems perfectly obvious to me that Dave A. was booted from the band to reward Jack Irons (who had recently parted ways with the RHCP) for uniting Eddie with Stone and Jeff in 1990. I think he's easily the band's best drummer (I still love ya, Matt). Dave Krusen was their STUDIO drummer on Ten, and that's IT. Dave A. went on to play every live club, every TV performance, every stadium tour, MTV Unplugged, and two albums with a combined 25 million copies sold at the pinnacle of their commercial success. And he did every interview; quietly. As opposed to the behavior of the attention-whore, megalomaniac Dave Grohl, during Nirvana's early years. So the "he enjoyed fame too much" BS used as an excuse at the time smells even more rotten than it used to, in hindsight. Dave A. is a big reason that I tell anyone, curious about why Pearl Jam got so big so fast, to KZread "Pearl Jam Live Porch 1992" to get all the info they need. He was an engine of raw intensity. Congrats, Pearl Jam. You've made an incredible number of right-moves in your career and been an inspiration to us all and to generations of idealistic young artists. But the wrong Dave was up on stage, today. I won't forget it. And I'll bet I'm not alone.”

Going from Dave Abbruzzese to Matt Cameron (via Jack Irons) to my ears is similar to going from Taylor Hawkins to Josh Freese in the Foo Fighters. The replacements are both great drummers, but DA and TH were both so much a part of their respective band's characters that neither is the same without them, and I think for pretty much the same reasons: the nuances and dynamic range in both player's grooves have a sense of musicality that is rare, something most players never develop.

Not just the energy, as Jac iron or Matt Cameron do have tons of it. But Dave could switch from hard hitting to soft fills in a snap. Making the whole songs more dynamic.
