    I hope people realize how historic this piece of video is. The "Ten" album was released just 3 days after this performance. They were literally just touring/promoting the album in their hometown with no idea as to what lied ahead. They're lives completely changed within weeks of this performance.

    @ Not how I remember it. I started college in the fall of 91. I remember hearing Alive on the radio and running out to buy the album in maybe September or October. Yes, it didn't TOTALLY blow up until the Jeremy video but it was pretty popular before then.

  • @BookClubDisaster

    @BookClubDisaster

    3 жыл бұрын

    @ Then I must have been cutting edge because I know I bought the CD in the fall of 91. I also remember they stopped making videos after Jeremy. Such a 90's thing to do. Also kind of biting the hand that fed you since it was the Jeremy video that put them in a position to do that. And call me a cynic, but they broke the no video streak in 98 with Do The Evolution. Not sure it's a coincidence that album sales had started to drop from their commercial peak of Ten, Vs. and Vitology.

  • @BookClubDisaster

    @BookClubDisaster

    3 жыл бұрын

    @ I know. I was there too. But I don't entirely agree. The lack of videos for Vs., Vitology, and No Code probably contributed to their commercial decline. Also--and I love No Code and Yield---but apart from their experimental nature, I think the songs weren't quite as strong as the first three albums. And no matter what they did, they weren't going to remain the top band in the world. Mass popularity is a young person's game--especially when it comes to record sales if not always concert sales. And......no rock band today can ever be as popular again. Rock was once a dominant form of pop music and now it's a niche genre if you're a new band. Pearl Jam were lucky to be part of last wave of rock's mass popularity.

    I filmed this with a giant 1988 cam allright! glad I captured this cool moment for PJ. The crowd was pretty relaxed up front- lucky for me. I caught one of the promo cassettes eddie threw out into the crowd at the end of the show- while still filming. it was the one with "Ive got a feeling" "Footsteps" and a couple otherz......love PJ

    They all did in 90 and 91. Layne, Kurt, Chris and eddie. Constant touring and countless live shows ruin vocals. Fact. Some like plant only got a couple years. Some are lucky and get longer. As 20s go into 50s it's just not doable. Many kudos to Cornell for doing it well most of the time until his death. Same with Ed though Ed never sang with Chris range.

    I was young in those years. When I see this I remember them and get a feeling of freedom, not because I was young but because there were different times without cell phones, computers, etc. Times with lots of bands where we enjoyed freedom. Today, young people do not know how to walk on the street and talk without a mobile phone. They don't know what they are losing. I'm glad I grew up with bands like this.

    It's funny how most laid back people in the audience don't realize the greatness of what they are hearing. There's a video of ACDC in Oakland doing a concert and breaking out Highway to Hell before the album dropped and after the song the crowd barely even acknowledged the song. Led Zeppelin also said they got lukewarm responses from the crowds when they did Stairway to Heaven before its release. The best music takes a few listens before an average fan will get it.

    A lot of it is psychological.. the more people there are creating a "buzz" around something like a song or band, it tends to spread like wildfire.. and more people are willing to take actual time to listen to it and get hooked There is sooooo much music out there, a lot of great music goes unnoticed, especially nowadays Bands like Zeppelin, ACDC, Pearl Jam, etc. were lucky to come out when they did IMHO, a lot of has to do with timing as well as talent, there was a lot less technology, clutter, and less competition overall back then Nevertheless, certain bands were destined for greatness, Pearl Jam being one of them I think the days of legendary bands like Pearl Jam, Zeppelin, Rush, etc. are over, the music landscape is too saturated because of my technology, there is too much music floating around, most of it being total garbage

    I’ve got a cool story about Eddie Vedder. First I worked for an insurance company back in the day in the special lines field and remember actually speaking to Eddie about his boat policy! He said enjoyed calling instead of his agent! Very down to Earth and later we were able to meet at a Seattle Pearl Jam show so he was able to put a face to the voice on the phone 📱. ILL NEVER FORGET IT! RIP CHRIS CORNELL. The Seattle scene in the early 1990’s is unsurpassed by anything going on today!

    It's 2023, a 52 year old man sits in his house with his wife and the one remaining child still at home at 17 years old. He thinks, "I was a part of history. This has to be the greatest PJ concert ever. The energy that fades with every live performance they do was there. At its peak. Raw. Electric, like a live wire from the most powerful electric plant the world has seen. I was there. I shook my head like a Peacock trying to show its feathers so my tiny pony tail, poking out of my black hat, would flap in the wind to attract a chick in a flannel, and yellow construction boots, experiencing herself a part of history. Na, I keep my mouth shut and hope they never see me nearly touching greatness..."

    This may be video footage of the first gig with drummer Dave Abbruzzese playing drums. I believe that prior to this day Matt Chamberlain had played only a few gigs. Chamberlain had replaced Dave Krusan who had recorded the album 10 but was in Rehab. Chamberlain was not ready to tour for 10 and was joining another band so suggested his friend Abbruzzese to come join the band. Dave Abbruzzese's own Wikipedia page verifies he played his first gig on the day of this recording. It says he was not committed to joining on his very first gig with the band which was on August 23 1991. By the end of his second show he loved the bad so much that he committed 100%. He finished the tour for the 10 Album and he then recorded mtv unplugged, vs, and Vitalogy with the band. What an amazing piece of history. Thanks for the upload op. Totally killer bro ❤

    Love how everybody is just listening to the music, as opposed to holding up their phones. The person filming this must have had a huge video camera, and was probably the only one doing it.

    Yes, the idea of filming a concert on your phone rather than being in the moment and actually enjoying it is very strange. So later it's, "Look at this concert that I filmed"

    I love all of these early PJ videos. They all seemed to only own a couple of t-shirts. And now they have more money than they can count and they still dress like they're a struggling band. This is why they're so beloved by their fans. They never stopped being themselves.

    I’ve been listening to this band since 1992, and finally got to introduce my twin sons to their music when they came to Fort Worth last week for two shows. There are literally no words to describe how incredible they are in person… I’m forever thankful that I got to share this amazing music with my kiddos, and it was their first concert!
