    I was 13 when this song came out and already a Pearl Jam fan. I was abused, mostly verbally and emotionally and via neglect, by my mother from birth to age 16, when I finally got to move away. This song hit me like a freight train. The lyrics hurt so bad, but yet I had never felt so seen and recognized. I can’t help but sing along, often through tears, when I hear it. I do make one small ad lib to it though- I sing “Don’t call me daughter. You’re not fit to.” This daughter has done a lot of work to overcome the past. I have no contact with either of my genetic contributors these days and I have two children of my own that have never known the sort of suffering I lived through. She has, indeed, risen above.

    wow. I know it's said that life is all about soul growth and learning to overcome - but it seems especially challenging and heart wrenching to hear about children going through abuse. That said, I'm happy you have done so well and I hope others going through similar stuff will read your comment and know that sometimes troubled people raise us, and we have to decipher what's best for one another on our own. best to you, Kay

    As a 40yo woman, and a teen of the 90’s, I loved this song, but it never “struck” me until hearing it today. I recently learned that my 6yrs older than me 2nd cousin, was abused by her family. To this day, they’re doing things to keep her down and under their thumbs. But, they always seemed so much “better” than us, so much more well-off and put together. I was shook when I found this out, and it pains me FOR her, because for all that we lacked in financials/functionality, we made up for in deeply caring for one another. I may have grown up in a shack of a home, but the love & support I experienced there, never really allowed me to see that I was “lower class”. It was just a feeling. This song came on today, and my cousin immediately came to mind. I’ve found that listening to music you once loved as a youth can open your eyes to many things you didn’t have the ability to comprehend before.

    Don't you just love how you hear a song like this and remember it from when you were young, and you knew you liked it for its melody and thats all you knew of it. Now that you are older and listen to it and find its true meaning, or atleast find a meaning within it that holds value to you because you have experienced more of life and have something to relate it to. It's incredible.

    hugs to you. i'm also a survivor but more importantly my 5 year old daughter made an outcry to me february 15,2023 that her dad / my ex husband of 5 years (she was almost 6 and we divorced before she was 1) was violating her little body. he had used the threat of killing me (which my abuser did) if she told. she's got a bit of a betrayal bond / trauma bond with him. all reports filed and he's gone to jail (bailed out in and me and the kids are in counseling. he's now stalking us in person and cyberstalking. i've tried to get any law enforcement to care. it's sad they can't / don't / won't do anything - because HE has RIGHTS. Our injustice system is a joke. Incestual pedos that post videos that got discovered - on the dark web - gets to walk free - despite being 50k behind on child support / violating bond / stalking/ death threats. anyways - i'm proud of you! any words of advice for my daughter?

    Even if Pearl Jam is not the best band out there, or the most popular, I believe they still deserve some respect. I mean they sold 60 million records worldwide, and have put up with some crazy stuff. I love how they won't make music videos because they want people to like the music not the video. They are a great group full of meaning, and truth to their songs. Go Pearl Jam!

    I don't know if anyone noticed that in this song, about an abused girl, the lyrics "shades go down" is used, and later in rearviewmirror, the lyrics "finally the shades are up" are used, tying the songs together really well.

    LEYENDAS... AMO PEARL JAM DESDE QUE LO ESCUCHE POR PRIMERA VEZ EN LA ERA DE ORO DEL GRUNGE

  • @SixMonthsIn
    @SixMonthsIn2 жыл бұрын

    This was written from the perspective of a girl with a learning disability called dyslexia and her mother who doesn't understand the condition. Eddie Vedder explained in Pearl Jam - The Illustrated Story: "The child in that song obviously has a learning difficulty. And it's only in the last few years that they've actually been able to diagnose these learning disabilities that before were looked at as misbehavior, as just outright rebelliousness. But no one knew what it was. And these kids, because they seemed unable or reluctant to learn, they'd end up getting the s--t beaten outta them. The song ends with this idea of the shades going down so that the neighbors can't see what happens next. What hurts about s--t like that is that it ends up defining people's lives. They have to live with that abuse for the rest of their lives. Good, creative people are just f--king destroyed." >>

    I grew up in the 90s. Snoop Dogg, Dre, Cypress Hill were my jam. Then one morning in 1994, I was 15 and woke up still half drunk in my friends lounge and this song was playing on the TV. I thought to myself “I need to listen to more of this band to find out if this song is just a one off”. That started my conversion from wanna be gangsta rap guy to losing myself in real music by legends such as PJ, Nirvana, SP, AIC, Soundgarden, RATM et al

    I admire PJ for not making videos of their songs until very recently. After Jeremey, I mean.. really, why even try to top that? The song can speak for itself. And I LOVE that. For each of us, it can be in our heads instead of some video producer. This song is a great example of that as most of their songs are.
