Peak Rail Presents- Doug Copley's Lineside Images #10.1 Sheffield to Rotherham, River Don+canal 1990

SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT
AND MAYBE EVEN UNIQUE FOOTAGE?
Sheffield to Rotherham along the River Don, and also the canal.
Filmed in the early 1990s.
Glimpses of bright red & yellow Mainline buses, and Supertram in 'as-delivered' dove grey (invisible in fog!) as Doug first follows the River Don from Sheffield City Centre to Tinsley. At Meadowhall Mainline bendy-buses on route 501 negotiate the sharp turn out of the Transport Interchange.
When the River Don meets the canal at Tinsley, Doug backtracks to the City centre for a detailed look around Sheffield Canal basin before setting off for Tinsley once more, but this time taking the canal route and looking at the industries alongside.
At Tinsley it gets ever more interesting as Doug follows the British Waterways Board boat "Eric of Lincoln" for the passage of the Tinsley flight of 11 locks. Plenty of railway activity seen as Doug journeys on board the boat past Ickles to just beyond Rotherham town centre.
A trip blessed with fine sunny weather, and we see once again Doug's uncanny knack of capturing jammy shots - what odds of filming a freight on the "Old Road" and then, right on cue, getting a unit appearing below on the Holmes Chord past C F Booth scrapyard ? !
Industrial heritage enriched by Doug's commentary about the works buildings seen, and revealation of the processes carried on within.

Doug Copley's Lineside Images
'Doug Copley's Lineside Images' are 68 titles filmed 1980's, 1990's & 2000's variously 12-90 minutes long. They come with Doug's own commentary and tend to follow lines of route, or particular workings, filmed over multiple return visits.
Doug's videos often include interludes of impressively vocal bird song!
In Alfred Hitchcock (filmmaker) style, Doug occasionally makes brief cameo appearances in his own films.
Doug Copley
Doug gave annual shows to Peak Rail Sheffield Branch. When he died in 2008 his films were kindly made available to the Peak Railway Association by his family so that appreciative enthusiasts can continue to enjoy his work in his memory.
During his working life as a steelworks commissioning engineer he travelled extensively and the collection includes South America, South Africa, India, Turkey (steam), and Australia. The UK collection includes many secondary lines, and also industrial railways. A treasure trove.

Very good. How the river has changed since the 2007 floods. Now all those trees and plants in the water have been removed for a better river flow.

Business picked up when Cooper's received a whole fleet of 81s from Crewe late in 1991.

Another Belter/ For anyone interested in Britains Industrial History. this cam footage and Narration is Essential watching. P.S , I am very Surprised to see so much ` Heavy Industry ` was still hanging -on here as late as 1990- 1993. The Diesel hauled freight train Action set amongst the Industrial surroundings is Brilliant .
