Peak Design Everyday Backpack Review (30L) | One Bag Travel & Photography

The Peak Design Everyday Backpack is full of smart features. Although intended for photography, it works well for digital nomads & one bag travelers, too. View Our Full Review: packhacker.com/travel-gear/pe...
This video review is featured on www.carryology.com/
The Everyday Backpack from Peak Design was originally designed as a camera bag, but we’ve found it to be an incredibly capable backpack for traveling, and especially for the photographer on the go. This backpack is loaded with features that you won’t find anywhere else-which really puts it in a league of its own. So “strap” yourselves in, this is going to be a long “haul.” Okay, we’ll stop with the backpack puns, but in all seriousness, this is a long review-we could talk about this thing for hours.
We synced up with Jon, a digital nomad on the road that's been living out of this thing for 6 months. Here's what he had to say: "I live out of my Everyday and carry my life in it, and I wouldn't go back to using any other bag. Superb on every level."

SHOW NOTES:
In this video, Tom Wahlin of Pack Hacker reviews the Peak Design Everyday Backpack. Although this bag is intended as a photography backpack, it also functions well for one bag travel. If you're a photographer on the road, it could be the perfect bag for you.

I was Backer #17 in the Peak Design Everyday Backpack Kickstarter, and I absolutely love my 30L, super-versatile whether if I want to go shooting or lugging books around, or travelling overseas. Pair it with a sling, and you'll have all the bags you'll need on a day-to-day level for an extended stay.

In my opinion, the best pack around. For this primary reason alone: while many packs on the market list capacity between the 25 to 35 L range, the usable volume is actually far lower than whats listed. When you pack your backpack next time around, notice the unused headroom of the backpack. All that empty space above your stuff. Peak Design solves the problem of unused space and organization in one fell swoop. Vertical compartmentalization is the key and if a backpack doesn't have it, I'm no longer interested.

Hey ! Great review as always. A lot of other reviews complain about the straps, saying it is really uncomfortable for long periods of time. I would like to purchase the 20l and I don't plan on stuffing it to the brim, my camera setup is pretty light but I would like to take this backpack on day hikes. Do you think it's doable ? Or are the straps way to uncomfortable for hikes ?

Hey Flora - we've only used the Everyday Backpack 30L in more urban environments, but we did find that the padded shoulder straps do provide a comfortable carry. Plus the sternum strap and hip belt do a good job at distributing the weight should you need it. Having not tested the 20L version, we're unable to verify how comfortable this pack is to carry, but we had a good experience with the 30L pack. Hope this helps! 😊 - Rebecca

Thanks for the great review. I am puzzled by the fact that it’s sold as a 30Lt. capacity pack but it’s only really completely sealed and weatherproof at 18Lt. Having to keep an eye out for open flaps on the top of my bag (what if I’m walking fast or running under the rain to catch a bus, can the bumps make them untuck?) sounds pretty much like a design flaw. The feature I like most about this bag is the double-sided accessibility, but having to single out and choose I am gravitating towards the Nomatic Travel Pack, which appears to keep its characteristics consistent in both compressed or expanded modes.

I like all the magnets, especially the quick access mini pocket on top. Its great for things like batteries or your smartphone if you need it out of your jeans pocket. But... ...... Wont those magnets leave permanent damage to your smartphone/batteries, or maybe even a laptop in the laptop compartment, especially if you decide to keep your expensive smartphone in the top mini pocket?

  • @PackHacker

Hey Dark Wish! We haven't found the magnets to damage any of our electronics at all. We feel that would take quite a strong magnet and Peak Design doesn't really have magnets strong enough to do that.

Pack Hacker I see they (Peak) actually listened to feedback and added Velcro! As I am sure you’re aware of. I ordered a 30L midnight blue this morning. One thing I wished they DID listen to, and sadly did not, was adding a cinch to the top under the mag flap. I will probably have a tailor add a strap to cinch down. Really shouldn’t have to though at such a high cost.

Thanks for the review Tom! Couple of things to add here based on my use: LEATHER IS UNTREATED. Anything you touch will leave a stain on the Ash-Brown leather bag. PRICE IS DOUBLE: Other made in San Francisco bags like Timbuk2 also come with lifetime warranty for $140. These guys are fooling millenials with cool videos and charging $289. WEIRDLY HEAVY! Feels like the bag is full even when it is empty. Like it is double the weight of a normal camera bag. Out of curiosity I weighed it, and Peak Design is clearly lying on the spec sheet. I am returning mine right now.

Okay, you got me to go to the Timbuk2 website and check out their backpacks. I'm glad you did since they are nowhere near as nice as the Peak Design Everyday Backpack.....not even on the same level. I couldn't even find a dedicated pack for photographers, as the PD pack is. None could be transformed to fit multiple different things with ease, like the PD pack can. So yeah, nice try and thank you for helping make the case for purchasing the Peak Design pack!

Nonsense. First, Timbuk 2's bag quality has really dropped in the last 5 years. Second, the attention to detail and the construction on this bag is top notch.Third, the regular charcoal color bag does not have the leather issues. Problem solved. Why the clumsy hatch job on the company? Why didn't you pick a Timbuk2 bag at first if you're price sensitive?
