Peak Design EVERYDAY BACKPACK 30L or 20L?? - Final Thoughts and Q&A

🔶 NEW COUPON CODE INSIDE: Go to goingawesomeplaces.com/peak-d... and use code WEMISSYOU-2LLV-PCLP to get $10 off orders $100 or more.
In this third review of Peak Design's Everyday Backpack, I take all of my in-the-field experience of the two bags - The 30L and 20L size and provide my final thoughts on each bag. I give insight into how I've used each bag (coming from a M43 world) and hope to answer that question that everyone's been asking about "should I get the Everyday Backpack in 30L or 20L?".
At the end of the video I also do a question and answer of some of the most commonly asked questions and touch on topics that I think you should know including:
- "Will it fit a drone?"
- "Will it fit the DJI Osmo?"
- "What is the bag's biggest flaw?"
- "Does it fit under a plane seat?"
- "How is the durability of the fabric?"
- "Is it secure?"
As a travel blogger, I'm always on the look out for the best gear to bring on the road. Peak Design has done an incredible job with the Everyday Backpack. For me, this bag has been about a balance of using it as a regular bag but also an excellent bag for all of my camera gear, my drone, and now my gimbal as well.

    Great review! I’m leaning towards the 30L. I’ve seen that the laptop compartment can expand into the bag to some degree. I have a thicker 15” Dell Latitude laptop for work plus a file portfolio... maybe 2.5-3” total thickness. Will the back section expand that much? I’m looking for a sleek, everyday work bag where I can also always have my camera with me. Hoping this bag fits the bill. I love everything I’ve seen so far.

    Great vids hombre! Question for you and this is probably aimed at the 30L bag. Supposed you have a camera (Fuji xh1), couple of prime lenses, laptop, iPad, and odds and ends. Do you think you could pack two days of clothings too? (Assuming you use the rolling method)? I’d love to use the 30 for a 1 bag travel bag and then then not traveling have it as my day carry. I know there is a bigger travel bag but that would be too big for a daily carry I think. Thanks for the effort in getting all your information out! Chris

  • @GoingAwesomePlaces

    @GoingAwesomePlaces

    Hey thanks Chris! It depends on how light of a packer you are in terms of clothes for the 30L backpack. I've done something similar for ski trips where I've used the bag to carry 2 days worth of clothes but with that, a lot of it I was wearing since it was the winter and I only had a change of base layers+underwear+PJs. I think a drone would push things over the limit so leave that at home if you have it but camera + lens (2 max) +laptop + iPad + some charging stuff + a few toiletries, you should be fine!

    Would the 20L be sufficient for a 5D Mk3 + Grip and a 50mm or 85mm? With enough room for a spare lens?

  • @GoingAwesomePlaces

    @GoingAwesomePlaces

    6 жыл бұрын

    Yes it'll fit but you'll have to adjust your dividers in the bag within the 20L to give more space for the 5DMK3 with Grip. The body + grip will take the full width of the bag in one divider and the 50/85mm can sit in a second divider. The spare lens may or may not fit in a divider depending on how big it is. If it doesn't fit a divider, you can always put it on the top part of the bag above the dividers and just make sure it is in its own lens case. Hope that helps!

  • @GoingAwesomePlaces

    @GoingAwesomePlaces

  • @GoingAwesomePlaces

    Katherine Wong gotcha! I think the 20L is perfect. It’s a bag that doesn’t feel large or bulky at all. That said I don’t have any experience with the PRVKE21. Is being collapsible to flat something that is super important? I can see you doing that with the PD but really only for transport of the bag inside of another.

    Hi, very nice review! The bag is GORGEOUS DESIGN + FUNCTIONAL COMPARTMENTS = HEAVEN!! I didn't realize that this bag is designed to be a camera bag. I am planning to get this as a gift for my boyfriend for work and gym. Do you have any feedback on using the bag as a gym bag...like going to the gym after work. I was thinking that the divider can be used to compartmentalize the running shoes, workout clothes and lunch. Edit - this is for the 20L backpack :)

  • @GoingAwesomePlaces

    @GoingAwesomePlaces

    6 жыл бұрын

    Hey Rose! Haha definitely organizer heaven here and customizable to what you need. Now I have to be honest, I haven't used the bag as a true gym bag although I have thrown random clothing inside my 30L while travelling. I'm guessing you're thinking about the 20L right? Well I can't see why you couldn't use it as a gym bag because if you make the dividers wide enough, you should be able to easily slot shoes in one compartment and clothes in another. You probably wouldn't need as many dividers as are provided and everything else you'd need for work would most likely just fit through the zippered part of the bag (i.e. laptop, keys, pens, misc stuff).

    Hopefully this comment is seen by others considering which one to go with. I have an everyday sling 10L. It is *too small* for even a jot down the street if I want a tripod and other camera gear I want to use like a speed light and some magmod gear. Yesterday I looked at the 20L. Honestly it doesn't appear to be a whole lot bigger though I know it is. I think I would still long for more space as I tend to spend a few hours out shooting and want the bare necessities along with enough camera gear to feel comfortable with. I too have a mirrorless and though they are small, I want a zoom lens that will do the job along with another lens. Based on these reviews I've decided on the 30L because I don't need more than one bag and I'll be prepared for most if not all situations as well as having snacks and whatever other little things that come up. Those little things can add up to more space than you have if your bag isn't big enough. Thanks for the review @Going Awesome Places.

    Thanks for dropping your comments here and taking the effort to write so much detail. I agree that 20L should be enough but with the 30L you know you're going to have enough space for whatever type of trip might come your way whether it be something for the day or a multi-day trip. Hope you enjoy the bag!!

    Can you fit 2 mirrorless bodies with lens (16-35 & 24-70mm) attached in the 20L with room for possibly 1 more lens (70-200mm) or a shoe mount flash?

  • @GoingAwesomePlaces

    @GoingAwesomePlaces

    5 жыл бұрын

    Ohh that would be very tight I think. The 70-200 would blow things away because that would take a complete slot at the bottom and the slot above could really only fit one mirrorless body + a smaller lens like a 16-35. If you're then comfortable with having the remaining things in the top open compartment, MAYBE you could? But I would definitely recommend a 30L for your needs

    @@nelsonkskim I shoot with Olympus M43 so I usually bring the main camera body + an all around lens (12-40mm) and a wide (7-14). In equivalent full frame terms (i.e. Canon) that'd be a 24-70 and 16-35mm. That's usually enough for my photo and video work!

    Would the 20L fit a 15" Macbook Pro Retina?

  • @GoingAwesomePlaces

    I just checked and yes the 15" MBP Retina will fit in as the width of the opening of the top slot is much larger than the width of the Macbook.

    great comparison! I will be carrying a mavic 2 with controller, iPad mini, a canon rebel with 2-3 lenses, a 15 MacBook Pro, accessories for all things mentioned prior and I would like to also fit a textbook or notebook in it as well. Do you think the 20L is capable or is the 30L my best bet?

    Thanks for dropping a comment Michael! I think for all the things you got there since you've got drone + camera + misc., the 30L is going to be your best bet. With the 20L you're going to have to make sacrifices on lenses and the number of drone batteries you bring for sure. Hope that helps!

    I loaded my tripod on the side I do not want to open. Quick and easy way for me to know DO NOT OPEN! I was gifted the 20L I exchanged it for the 30L and then exchanged it back to the 20L. Majority of the time its an everyday bag to/from work and daily stuff. For that the 30L is too big. When I travel I would rather make the 20L work and It will help me to carry the necessities and not carry clutter. Thanks!

    Looks like 20L should also fit the Osmo if you set up a vertical pass through by collapsing the sides of all shelves. I also found out that carrying something like a water bottle in a side pocket really helps me remember which side I have to swing to. :) Got myself a 20L one about a month ago (thanks to your reviews, very helpful!) and have been trying its limits a lot. It even fits a 15.6 inch laptop (a really fat one), although it's pretty tight.

    Thanks for watching! Actually you're right, that's a neat trick that you can use that I totally forgot to mention! I discovered it awhile back...good call :) Also like the water bottle trick haha...simple but works! Impressive you've been able to fit a 15" into the 20L. Been happy with the purchase or thinking about whether you'll need a 30L in the future?

    I don't travel too often, also not very good at it... Still rely on a checked in bag for the most of my stuff :) Once I get rid of it I will need a bigger carry on for sure. For now 20l works perfectly for me as a daily bag. I don't use it for camera gear, just a bunch of small things, occasionally an action cam and a drone.

    Sid Nguyen thanks for your update! Under heavy steady rain I’d expect as much since it’s not rated to be water proof. That said under rain in urban areas where you’re kind of ducking in and out, those corners have gotten wet but the insides with camera gear were dry and protected.

    Let me solve your "main issue" right now. If you know which side is your "go to" side then you simply load your "go to" items accessible when you flip to that primary side. After just a short while of using it you will develop muscle memory and when that sudden opportunity for a great picture presents itself, and you quickly respond with flipping the backpack to it's "go to" side, you will have your camera and lenses you use most ready for action. Second issue with no legroom by placing the 30L under the seat in front of you......um, don't put it under the seat in front of you. I fly a lot, and I mean a lot, and I've NEVER had to put things under the seat in front of me....NEVER! I see absolutely ZERO reason why anyone would do this.

  • @GoingAwesomePlaces

    @GoingAwesomePlaces

    Good tips for new users for sure! When wearing the bag itself, it's less of an issue because like you said, you eventually develop a comfortable way to swing it around whether it be your left or right side. One thing that I still kind of have trouble with is when I have the bag on the ground and I'm facing it. Remembering which side my camera body is on can be confusing sometimes because how you swing it doesn't automatically click in your head whether it's the left or right flap (if maglatch side is facing you). The longer you travel with the bag the more automatic it becomes but it takes some time for it to register (at least it did for me!)
