I've seen a lot of videos on this bag and this is actually the best review I've seen. I think I brushed pass this last year when I was researching the bag and now just came across it randomly. I bought the bag but this review nailed it down to the tee.

Nice review, thanks for doing this - I do 6 month cycling tours every year and have been looking for a new bag that I can use for walking around town to carry photo equipment as well. I like that I can keep this bag on the rear rack with the straps tucked out of the way while keeping my photo and video equipment handy. 3.5 lbs is heavier than I would like but this weight isn't unusual for a travel or even backpacking backpack . I think this bag will keep everything more accessible than the lighter roll top bag I was using before. It's so important that gear is accessible. If I can get to my gear easily it's more likely to be used. Aside from the weight, I think this bag is a winner.

Love the review! I have the sageI and the packing cubes too, but opted not to get the tech and wash bag because they are a little bulky for my needs. I was impressed by the amount of clothes you got in those cubes! Can’t wait to see more videos.

Pro tip: use black tape to roll up and secure the straps so they don't flap around and catch dirt. Easy army trick. LOVE how stable the straps are. I regularly haul 20kgs worth of camera gear around and they've been holding on surprisingly well thus far (8 months in).

I must say I was really impressed by the cube's ability to hold all your clothes. Nice packing. I am torn between the fact that I have to purchase a separate camera cube to insert it into the bag. I mainly do photography and currently looking for a solid bag. I am also looking at the Tenba Axis 32L. Cheers for sharing.

Hey, happy new year! Did you make a purchase after all? Thinking about it myself, especially for carry-on travel with maybe one more small bag. I have a minimal photo set up (Fuji and 2 lenses) but I also have a Mini 3 pro drone so not sure if the small camera cube will be enough (probably not) and no idea how much room you are left with after two small camera cubes rotated for side access - do you reckon that two small packing cubes could be stacked together when compressed?

@@gkampolis Hey man, Happy New Year! So I got mine about a year ago and ended up purchasing the bigger duffel bag as well. Got the medium and large cubes and all the travelling gears also. The bag is fantastic and made with quality in mind. My only gripe is that I have a beefy non plane travel tripod that I have yet to successfully attach it to the bag. It ends up drooping down the bag. Not a big issue though but for travel wise, its an excellent bag. For your setup, if you have a smaller gear to carry, they recently came out with a 30L size bad that's smaller that the once described in this picture which you want to look into. To answer your question, yes. I sometimes stack mediumly packed cubes together when compressed.

I've that backpack and I must say that I'm happy overall with that, because their _cubes_ and _pouches_ and, yes, there are so many pockets and spaces to carry *but* yes, I miss a better quality straps and an be a little heavy. I also have that _Locktote_ and yes, for some little stuff in a day travel is OK, or going to the beach but for more and/or bigger stuff like shoes and a pullover it becomes so small. That _Peak Design_ backpack is nice and I use that so often in some small trips here in Spain and in Europe and I didn't find other better yet, having in mind the cabin size luggage.

I just bought this bag. I want to also bring a smaller day bag to carry a jacket and what ever to fit under the seat of the plane or walking around town or a hike. I dont want a roller bags becasue I will be on a lot of cobble stone streets. The other bag I was looking at was the Goruck but they were twice the price. I have found all bags are not perfect but this seemed the best.

I like your flow -would love to see a comparison against the SHIMODA action pack

The tech bag and the toiletry bags are nice but they are too big and eat up a lot of space, I switched them up for smaller bags that I put in the front section of the bag. I keep the toiletry bag in the zippered divider and the tech bag in the top zippered section. You always need to adjust what you carry for whatever is good for you.

I have the travel duffel 35l and the everyday backpack v2 20l as my current travel combo, but the duffel is a pain in the butt to haul through large airports if I also have my backpack on. Seeing as how I max out both backpacks, I don’t think I can replace both with just a single travel backpack 45l. Ideally I’d be able to travel with both the travel backpack 45l and the travel duffel 35l, and put one in the overhead bin and the other under the front seat, BUT it seems like on some puddle jumpers, the front seats BARELY fit my everyday 20L… so that plan wouldn’t work either haha…

I tried the Tortuga Outbreaker. I was not a fan. The Setout looks to be better, but the Outbreaker really turned me off. For me, the PD seemed to have far more "usable" space than the Outbreaker.

You could save some space by using a minimalist jacket like nanopuff and using more merino stuff, less stuff altogether.

You'll like the extra features and it's more stylish than Osprey packs to boot. The advantages of the ones you listed are that they are lighter weight.

Is possible put the medium and small packing cubes and wash pouch and 2 pair of shoes and 1 jacket. And put it in the upper compartment of the airplane . Put the 45l in the upper compartment is possible

I have TSA PreCheck too. Sometimes they'll still have to scrutinize a statistical sampling from the PreCheck line. The shortest answer to your question is "It depends." It will vary from one TSA screener to another and even with the same one based on what kind of mood the screener's in. Assume the worst. Instead of jumping in line, first, well before you get anywhere near a line, get well out of the flow of foot traffic, and take everything out of your pockets and put them and your belt into a zip-up container like a passport belt, passport necklace, or small packing cube. Also have your liquid containers in a small zip-up bathroom kit/packing cube. That way, when it's your turn to empty your pockets, you just easily put 2 small packing cubes / zip-up pouches in those little plastic cups or bins. TSA can open and examine them to their hearts' content. Clear, PreCheck, and Global Entry have been well worth it for me.

Some times they’ll ask you to remove anything they find odd through the scanner. I learned to keep things like any kind of liquid or batterie at the very top zip in separate bags. This is in case they ask you remove it you will have quick access to them to show them and be on your way. I have been asked many times when it came to batteries, so I keep them right at the top.

I like this Pac2Go adapter because it has 4 USB ports, so pretty much everything I need to charge and can be done with this one adapter! amzn.to/2UmRMD5 The wallet is from Hedgren and appears to be discontinued.

I'm pretty sure you can't. According to Peak Design themselves you can only go with the Small Camera Cube+the Medium Packing Cube, or the Medium Camera Cube+the Small Packing Cube :-)

If that happens, just pull all the jackets out of your bag and wear them. Then have them re-weigh the bag. Inconvenient but at least you get everything.

I researched and bought this bag, the Standard 45L, the Tortuga Setout 45L, and the eBag Weekender. I had a Rick Steves Convertible Carry-on pack but it was way too unstructured and the straps after 21 days in Europe last May were digging into my shoulders too much. Ended up returning the Standard, the Tortuga, and the eBag. I will try the PD Travel 45L Backpack and for a personal item on the airplane a Lowe Pro Tactic 350 for my Sony RX10M4 with a 3K Gorilla Tripod and the PD Tech pouch on a 16 day trip starting tomorrow in Egypt/Jordan. I'll report back how it goes.

This is a follow-up to my use of the PD Travel 45L, the PD Small and Medium Packing Cubes, the Tech Pouch and the Wash Pouch on a 16 day trip to Egypt and Jordan. They all worked very well and I would recommend them to all who want to go with carry-on only luggage. The PD 45L held all I wanted to carry and weighed about 8.5 Kilos (18.7 lb) with all my stuff (minus the tech pouch, it was in my camera bag) packed in it. This setup fit in all overhead bins on BA, EgyptAir and Royal Jordanian Air. Both EA and RJA use Embraer aircraft which have small overhead bins. The packing cubes are outstanding, I really like how they can be used to compress clothing using the zipper to make them smaller. The TP held all my SD cards, cables and adaptors needed for using a Sony camera, two Apple Watchs and two iPhones. This is just a little bit of detail, let me know if anyone wants more detail.

I fly 60-80 flights per year and not even once was by backpack weighted. I guess it region depended as I mostly travel in northern Europe.

Can you hide the straps

The zippers are lockable, and the side zippers can be tucked away. I didn't cover that in the video since it isn't something that's usually important to me. The idea is to have a pack that's as mobile as me, so it's always with me and never has to be out of my sight.

@@theophanystudio2960 If you're a light packer, sure. What I like about it is the big spacious main compartment, and the excellent accessories that fit perfectly inside it. If you don't really need it as a camera bag, then you might look at some of the other carry-on one bag travel options out there such as the Minaal or Osprey Porter, but I still think I would recommend this one for its durability and flexibility in accommodating different travel styles.

Instead of the loctote, would you consider using the PD Travel Bag as your daypack in its most compressed form (30L with the buttons snapped down)? They advertise it as convertible to a daypack, but is it really usable as a daypack in practicality? Thanks!

I did use it as a daypack when carrying my laptop to a coffee shop to do some work. I would also use it to carry a larger camera kit when my shoulder bag wouldn't suffice. I think for those uses, when you're carrying a significant amount of gear, it's fine as a daypack. But as a "general purpose" daypack, I think it's a bit too bulky and heavy. In the context of the video, I know inevitably I will have to check the bag on some budget airline that strictly enforces weight limits, and if/when that happens, I will have my Loctote available to slide my laptop and other valuables into that I wouldn't want to check. Other options might be the packable Osprey Daylite, Matador, or Sea-to-Summit bags. I just think it's advisable to have something ready just in case you end up having to check the PD.

Most of the weight is transferred through the back zipper. Are you afraid of this zipper failing? It happened to me on my previous backpack this style. It was way lower quality though.

I've had it for three trips to Asia. I haven't had any issues with the zippers.

Love the bag, will probably end up getting one someday. I have a few of the other PD bits. They're well designed and well thought out. KZread tip: Look up "vocal fry" and avoid it when narrating. It makes you sound bored, which comes across as boring.

serious question: How do any of these travel reviews claim to go over a week with these bags... basically how does this guy put 2 weeks of socks and underwear in here? where do dirties go? do you change underwear and socks? do you bring 2 pairs and wash them? really curious how this works.

Just many years of traveling and acquiring the right gear! I like brands that make stuff that is good for travel and for everyday. DUER Performance for pants, Ex Officio for underwear, etc. As I buy new clothes, I look for these kinda of brands. The bonus is that their stuff looks good and performs well in the day to day, whereas some travel brands make clothes that perform well but you'd never actually want to wear in a non-active environment. Very easy to pack a week's worth of clothes and do laundry, but I believe using both cubes I could have packed for the full trip without really having to wash (maybe undies in the hotel sink), but using both cubes would have meant taking something else out to make room for it such as the Tech pouch.

Anything that can pull double duty is good too. So shorts that can also be used as swim trunks (Roark Revival), pants that are good for the trail, but also look good going to dinner (DUER), shirts that are good for the trail and also for dinner in town (Outdoor Research), quick drying/anti-microbial underwear (Ex Officio) and socks (SmartWool). And then as you see in the video, the cube can really swallow up a lot of stuff and compress it down tight.
