I'm annoyed at them for describing the peafowl as "shallow". Sorry, no, that is a human concept. These birds aren't shallow, they're doing what nature has equipped them to do. For the males, showing their tail shows they are wily enough to survive in the wild with that crazy tail. For the female, they can judge the health of the males because only a healthy male will be able to produce that brilliant plumage. A strong and healthy male will give them strong and healthy chicks.

I'm annoyed peacocks are the poster-boy for courtship displays. There are many scientists who assert the peafowl displays to attract females, and therefore an example of sexual selection but this is unsubstantiated and based on feral peafowl populations. Keep in mind that Peafowl are found in the same environments as snakes, eagles, and leopards. One could argue they have been in an arms race with these species. The display can be used for communication with females but it is mainly an anti-predatory display. There is NO study that has supported the hypothesis that the train of the peacock is a "handicap" and affects its ability to fly. A recent study suggests the train has very little effect on a peacock's takeoff.

That's exactly what being shallow is. You do realize it is a "human concept" because we too developed an instinct that good looks=good genes? They're shallow just like humans are.

+blueskyscribe She said "Peacocks are the most shallow of all male birds" Yet, it's the Peahens who dropped the obligation for Peacock to do so. If Peahens had chosen another method for selecting mates, like speed, strength, or ability to provide, then Peacocks would have evolved differently. The second point is that she said "the most" as if other birds choose based on personality rather than physical traits LOL.

If the bird has been a divine symbolism for the most intelligent monastic traditions and highest majesties respected and celebrated by all the people around the world, it cannot be a shallow animal. Well.. I think that was a shallow try to degenerate and disgrace the absolute beauty of the bird. You know, if someone tries to downgrade something, it's usually because they are very difficult to disgrace. They must have been so much jealous of its splendour.

  • @kimw8743

Yobib Nartea True, this is because the female must be plain in order to blend in better and hide her offspring. In sexually dimorphic bird species where the male is more beautiful, odds are he is a useless male who does help her raise their chicks at all. In bird species where both genders look the same bald eagles crows etc. they raise their babies together.

People love the beautiful birds and it is a symbol of love to my moral concept. At least I'd prefer to think so. The beauty is always in the eye of its onlooker. Ugliness is also in their own eyes. If they want to see or tell only the ugly parts of a thing, it's because their mind is twisted and ugly by jealousy.

Did you know that in South Korean language 'peacock' is the same spelling with the word 'Duke'? I thought the English word of duke was much more similar to 'duck' in the language of Egyptian hieroglyphs which does mean duke, prince or the son of the king (it describes a duck with the sun), probably because of its association with the first civilisation where celebrated and worshipped the monarchs. Pyramid and eye symbol is often depicted with the radiant triangular halo which I thought is like the peacock feathers, and also reminds me of the triangular back of the throne of present English monarchs, really. So when the monarchs were seated in the throne a triangular halo is placed behind their face. In an annexed church to Paris Pantheon there is a depiction of Moses with its triangular halo. Interesting, isn't it? I'm quite sure that such figures of language first originate from the Egyptian culture to describe the aristocracy and divinity with the metaphors to various animals, especially, in case of Egypt, birds. If the civilisation contacted India and brought peacocks when the hieroglyphics were created and used, I'm sure they'd worship this bird and used peacock to describe divinity.

It's a different grammar in different subjects. The science uses this language for example, 'impress', to describe the animal behaviours and I think the word is to denote a very empirical observation. The art history probably describes it with 'love', 'majestic', and 'glorious', to indicate its self-containing figure of speech and metaphors.

Shallow? The approach to the female for mating, the mating itself is a beautifully sensitive and respectful one by the male. He literally bows to her gracefully before and afterwards also as he backs elegantly away walking backwards and facing her. Gracious and gentle and magnificent.
