peaceful days + discussing

I think this is honestly my pick for favourite vlog I've ever worked on, I really love this one. I think mostly because it oozes with the magic of One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Márquez, which rearranged my life and utterly changed the colour of everything I look at. I've been thinking about doing a whole video about this book so if that's something you're interested in, let me know! The second half of this vlog contains my thoughts (by no means final) on the book and a little ramble about Rilke. I'm glad I have this channel to document my feelings about books, reading days in the sun with friends, late night chats about Dickens with ‪@CarolynMarieReads‬, and all the glimmering and warm things that life, changed as it might be right now, still remains full of. If you're reading this, I hope these words find you well and deep in the magic of either your own life or in the lives of some fantastical book 💕

    Oh my gosh, describing cliffhangers as a capitalist tactic to sell books was so funny and so accurate. Like how serialization affects plot structure in classic Doctor Who or Victorian novels published in parts-lots of little arcs and climaxes to keep you coming back. Lovely video as always!

    If you're interested in more Magical Realism I'd recommend "Pedro Paramo" by Juan Rulfo, it's considered one of the original works of magical realism, it was loved by both Marquez and Borges, it also inspired Garcia Marquez writing (specifically during the writing of 100 Years of Solitude) he loved it so much that he claimed to have memorized it by heart. You can also check out "Recollection of things to Come" by Elena Garro it is a beautiful and brutal tale composed in vignettes and set during the infamous Mexican Cristero War (1926-1929) it is also a classic and is considered one of the original works of magical realism. Loving the combination of music and reading updates, great Vlog!

    Hello from France. Fun fact, the sentences of the book you have read, there are the same I have noted. And I just love so much the moment with the yellow flowers and when he lost himself in his loneliness. This book is just so great. And I like so much your vlogs ; ).

    Hey! I know this video is super old now but I watched your vlogs on 100 years of solitude and just wanted to say that I loooved this, as a colombian girl I grew up with lots of teachers and older people referencing Gabo’s books and the beauty of Macondo, and it was very beautiful to see your journey reading this book and investing ur time in trying to understand it all, even more so as an ‘outsider’ of my culture. (Idk if you’ve watched Disney’s Encanto but omg the yellow butterflies). If you’re interested in reading more of his works I’d personally suggest No One Writes to the Colonel , it’s not as famous nor as magical and beautiful as this one, but it depicts the sad truths and the history of my country in a short amount of pages, so it makes a great 2-3 hour read or less. Also if I remember correctly I think it is also set in Macondo, but anyways I loved watching your journey with the book! Hope ur doing great c:

I balanced all, brought all to mind The years to come seemed waste of breath A waste of breath the years behind In balance with this life, this death" You've definitely made me want to read 100 years of solitude - previously the Marquez book I was most interested in was the story of a shipwrecked sailor (that seems less magic realism, more realistic though(?)) Also (sorry about my nagging), it's a misconception that you can make words up easily in German. It's just the way that compound words are structured (and printed). There isn't much difference between saying “strawberry ice cream” and “strawberryicecream”, or “application form” and “applicationform”. English actually has lots of creativity with words, for instance, you can take any noun and turn it into a very expressive adjective by adding -y. Science-fiction-y, magical-realism-y. That doesn't really work in German, at least it's more complicated.

  • @emmiereads

    @emmiereads

    4 жыл бұрын

    Aha I do know, I think most of the time I manage to do away with the aspirated [k] or the "ch" sound, but I believe what's actually happening is the rolled [r] sliding too far and wanting to produce the same effect in what should essentially be the correct voiceless stop [c] but oh well, and ah thank you - I really hope you do too!!

    Oh I see, I didn‘t consider it might just be hard to pronounce, sorry. It seemed more difficult to me :) And you definitely know more phonetics than I do ...

    I read this book a couple of years back and I didn’t understand a lot of it. Because of the magical realism, I couldn’t get into it. I like to read more realistic fiction.

    Marquez explained Magical Realism as realism where the author of fiction takes advantage of the medium to do what is ordinarily not possible. Predetermination is something associated more Presbyterianism that Catholicism, but hey not all Latins are Catholics, who are big on free will, but not every Latino is Catholic. good abstract, thx
