I am glad that someone has said it on youtube. Pea puffs CAN go in with other fish. Just make sure they have a varied diet and a few snails to hunt.

Interesting thing about Pea Puffers, according to puffer enthusiasts, Pea Puffers are actually one of the few shoaling species of freshwater puffers. If they're kept in a group of 6 or more, they are far less likely to be aggressive with each other or tankmates, and are generally much happier.

I keep 4 in 64L and one day they are best GANG mates, the other day they chase one another a little, but there's never been a seroius fight. As it comes to other fish, they don't care.

I have a 10 gal community tank that has 2 sparkling Gouramis and a female pea puffer with other fish.

Pea puffers make me want to start another tank😬

I have a pair of pea puffers in a heavily planted 5 gallon bowl. They get along very well and are such a joy to watch. They seem to enjoy each other's company as well as time apart in different areas. I made sure to create their environment with lots of sight blocks and free space for them whenever they're struck with the zoomies lol one of my favorite tanks!

Two of my favorite nano fish! with Sparkling Gourami, you need a lid for the tank but with the Pea Puffers, you don't. Also breeding Pea Puffers is much harder than Sparkling Gourami for sure. My Pea Puffers eat frozen blood worms and snails regularly. Recently I tried Hikari Vibrabites and they seem to like it! I'm more of Pea Puffer fan since they come to the front of the tank when I come to the tank, where Sparkling Gouramis tends to hide from me.

My sparkling gouramis actually move toward anyone who gets near the tank.

I love pea puffers, I feed mine snails, frozen blood worms and their absolute favorite is live black worms. I put a few in a feeding cup and drop a few into the bottom of the tank to hunt. My last pair lived over 7 years. I’ve always had them in pairs but recently on FB I had quite a few people come at me saying they are a schooling fish and there needs to be 6 or more. I’m mind blown at all the rules for fish, especially since I have had fish for the past 15 years plus and rarely loose a fish but somehow have broken all the rules. A little common sense has always worked out for me. I feel bad for new fish keepers that go to fb for help or ideas because the fun and experimentation gets sucked right outta them.

Dinky FB groups for fish keeping are totally antisocial and I find offer an opinion when not asked for and order rules and regulations for husbandry that is not entirely correct and most of the time completely false. There is a handful of KZread channels that have great fans, this is one, Ben O'chard is another and Cory at aquarium co-op tells you from experience about a great many fish/livestock and products. The fact you have had your puffers for over 7 years proves you are knowledgeable with your hobby and your fish.. take care and stay the heck away from FB fish groups.

Who cares what folks say on FB. I wouldn’t get too bothered by the trolls, that’s what they want. Nothing wrong with doing what you do if it has worked out, fishkeeping is about finding balance. If you’ve found balance with the way you keep fish then stay the course!

I have 3 female peas in a 10g heavily planted tank and just recently added 5 cpd’s. Everyone seems to be getting along great and the peas come out when the mood suits them to hunt. They all stay fat and cpd’s are little predators! They work great together in the same tank.

I would love to have both some day. I'm always facinated with pea puffers, but I've heard they don't tolerate most other tankmates. And I love all Gouramis, but had bad luck with my dwarf gouramis a year and a half ago succumbing to Dwarf Gourami Disease. Maybe I'll try again.

For viewing pleasure, sparking gourami is the choice. However, if you wanna keep as a pet, pea puffer will make a great pet, the level of human interaction of this tiny fish is almost as high as goldfish and betta, the only downside is you do need to keep a separate snails breeding tank to keep up with their snails consumption.

I've got three sparkling gourami in with 8 pygmy corys in a well panted 13.5 gallon fluval evo. Maybe having the corys around makes them feel more comfortable, from a distance they look kind of similar. Anyway mine never hide, the corys seem to be more nervous about large motions near the tank than the gourami. Since I started feeding live adult brine shrimp they have started to all three come out front and center if I put my face near the glass. They do like inspecting every little nook and cranny of the tank but it seems to be more hunting than shyness.

I just got a group of 12 sparkling gourami and they really are amazing fish! I love them and they look stunning

My 10g has 8 chili rasboras, and I just added some habrosa corydoras. Also thinking about a centerpiece fish. But the chilies are small and fast!

I love my colony of pea puffers, they are in a 75 with other fish now and I love seeing their grouping behavior! I recommend keeping a colony of you can keep a larger Aquarium maybe try a 40 breeder if anyone wants to

I've never kept pea puffer. I just bought a sparkling gourami today. Already, her personality is showing and she is very inquisitive. Very much like a betta but twice as adorable. Those big blue eyes were watching me from behind the anubias plant while I was in front of the tank. They are shy, yet curious at the same time. I might get some pea puffers later on though as they do look interesting.

Another great video. Now you have me thinking about these two fish and another tank. How would these 2 do in a 5 gallon or 7 gallon with Scarlet Badis as tank mates. Also, how many snails would the pea puffer eat at once and what do you do when you run out of snails in your fish tanks.

Haven't kept a pea puffer yet.... I love my sparkling gourami.... they always come out of hiding when I come to the tank.... so they definitely know I am food... if I am across the room on the couch... they are chilling in the plants... if I go near the tank.. they jet right out into the open middle and beg for food..good... and I have a pretty lucky group of them that all came in in one shipment and all get along with 5 in my 20 gallon... granted I added them after the tank had been growing for 2 years when I move all my tetra out and the plants fill it up fairly well... not heavily planted, but mature plants... I have one anubia that takes up half the tank and so they have all that root network from the higher end of that to burrow in and the leaves are all sight breaks and shade... but it is is probably just luck on my part because they were also chill when I had them in my 10 gallon quarantine tank and that is just a a big driftwood in the middle with some anubias Nana on it

Love me some pea puffers. Have a pack of six I got from Flip Aquatics last year and they are too Cool 😎

In tanks 10 gallons and above it may be possible to keep them in groups (advisable) provided the male/female ratios are correct and the tank has enough hiding spots.

most people get turned off by them cause they are mostly fin nippers that nip fins of fish with large flow fins like bettas some gourami’s etc and they also like to be in groups so they can establish their pecking order and that way they distract themselves more and tend to leave other fish more alone in groups so in that sense they’re like tiger barbs serpae tetras and buenos aires tetras which do similar stuff. so good tank mates would be quick moving small fish that are not too large to eat the puffer or too aggressive and won’t outcompete it for food. so good tank mates are neon tetras, chili rasboras, zebra danios, pearl danios, otocinclus, khuli loaches etc

My pea puffer is huge now and lives just on snails..he lives in a very busy tank of guppies and he knows to keep out the way feeding time..they did knock him about abit when he was small..I know female guppies will eat young new born snails some times but I have one that tries to eat them like the puffer she will knock them off the glass and try to get them ..my puffer only eats pest snail I can keep any other snail with him fine

All my pea puffers died when we lost power a few months ago in that winter storm in Texas. I replaced them with sparkling gouramis. It's a tough call, but I think I prefer the gouramis. That being said I'm sure I'll keep pea puffers again eventually.

you can but i think with pea puffers they got a similar dynamic as tiger barbs where if u keep them in small groups and in a small cramped space they will be more aggressive and take out their fin nipping out on other fish however if you put em in large tanks and in large groups they will establish a pecking order and are more likely to chase each other instead of other fish exactly like tiger barbs so to have tank mates with them best to have a pretty large tank at least 30-40 gallons minimum and in larger groups of 6 or more and with a lot of plants and snails for them to be distracted and ignore most other fish

I was just wondering if this stocking for a 40 breeder sounds good: 2-3 small fancy goldfish, their not stunted, they are in a 55 gallon now, but their petstore goldfish which I notice don’t really get as large as let’s say a high quality, the biggest is about 5” now and I don’t think she’ll get much bigger at all And 2-3 dojo loaches how does this stocking sound for a 40 breeder? Tysm!

My peas aren't eating full grown neocaridina shrimp (I've yet to see any babies though). They help a bit w/ the scraps of snails left in shells.

The two get along fine (we have them together). OUrs will only eat snails, but some people are able to feed them small blood worms. One of ours also likes live baby brine.

Pea Puffer for sure, I love all the puffers. They act all coy with those sad little eyes, you cant help but fall in love,,,

Pea puffers are great if you don’t want any inhabitants with them. I really like sparkling gouramis better because I can have snails and a few extra fish if I want them.

I've always wanted to keep Sparkling Gouramis, but my Pea Puffers are awesome.

I absolutely love my murder peas lol. They are so personable and know it's time to eat when they see the worm bin. They are full grown now and live with a few shrimp, two otocinclus, and two panda corys. They all get along and the puffers don't bother the others. They are snobs and would rather eat their worms.

Would they make decent tank mates? You say they like the same water, the same slow flow, the same multitude of hiding areas etc. Would it be feasible to keep one of each in a planted 5 gallon? - it certainly would not be overstocked.

We have them both in the same tank - 12 gallon long. I'm not sure how they would work out in a 5 gallon. It might work though.

I have 3 gold zebra danios cycling a newer tank, they’ve been in for about 2.5 weeks now. One of them is getting quite aggressive, especially during feeding it won’t let one of them eat (I feed smaller meals 2 times daily) I don’t turn on the tank light anymore because I noticed it was making things worse. There is a lot of space to hide but it doesn’t help during feeding obviously….anyone have any suggestions?

They can be aggressive towards one another. Usually keeping larger groups helps.

I tried to breed Sparkling gouramis in a 20 long. Started with 6 gouramis in a 20 Gal Long with a dozen Pigmy Corydora. Turns out they are ALL MALES... Would Pea Puffers be a good replacement instead of the gouramis in this sort of tank?

I have a shoal of pea puffers living with a butterfly fish, Congo tetra, Sterbai Cory, Horseface loaches, Bristle nose plec, Zebra plec L46, Amano shrimp and a young MBU puffer in a large corner tank run by a FX6 and a Fluval 307 with Uv sterilisation connected trust me a pea puffer can handle flow with ease. Do you have a Facebook page I can share with you some footage... take care both of you your tanks are marvellous..

@@Proxyyy825 I don’t have this setup anymore as I’ve gone down the route of going to a full Lake Tanganyika display.. my livestock went back to the aquatic shop and my tank is now a 200gal custom tank, the Butterfly fish was commented on the fine big specimen she was.. she was fully aware when fish were below her and would either move quickly out the way or literally shoot the other side of the tank and hide.. this was not caused by the pea puffers it was normally the Congo tetra as when fully grown caused mayhem as they were the most aggressive feeders, all African tetra go this way when mature..

I tried housing some small 3 inch pictus catfish in this one 75 gallon tank i got with large fish like several adult full sized ctenepoma, full grown pearl gourami, keyhole cichlid, a 9 inch gargantuan severum, and a roseline shark and giant danio, 2 raphael catfish, and a group of 5 really big 5 inch yoyo loaches, gold nugget pleco, blue phantom pleco, bristlenose pleco, sumo loach, and two large congo tetras and the congo tetras severum and one of da ctenepoma kept harassing and chasing da pictus catfish trying to eat them

@Proxyyy825 I got the pea puffers first and added the other fish as young fish, the Congos were only the size of a large Cardinal Tetra so were not able to harass anything in the tank, the Congos were only trouble when feeding as they used speed and aggression to get the upper hand when adults.

Luckily, I was in the room when it happened so I put him back in the tank immediately. it's strange because they never did this though and never showed interest to do it. Mine are actually quite shy of the surface. I also have a slightly reduced water level specifically to make jumping over the edge of the tank harder for them, so I assume he really got startled by something in the tank to jump like that.

Or you could get a Betta! I’m sorry I’m like this 😬

I think the two are a bit unevenly matched as fish that is. Here in Australia a pea puffer costs anywhere from $200 to $400, whereas a sparkling gourami costs $9.

I would love a Pea Puffer, but I just love my snails too much; it would stress me out to watch them being predated. The Sparkling Gourami have made a nice addition to my Endler tank, they don't seem to mind all the activity, they just continue to go about their business. I am still looking for a 'Feature' fish for this tank (20 gal cube), because the Sparkling gourami are always up in the Water Lettuce. Let me know if you have any ideas! :)

Okay so, while i do love that you mention that pea puffers are really not that aggressive, which they aren't... I do hate how you forgot to mention that pea puffers are a shoaling fish and should be kept with at least 6 in a 15 gallon. Their lifespan drastically lowers when they are alone or with too little of an amount. Only when they are too aggressive to their own kind should they be kept alone. Its very clearly visible when you had 3 and saw them grouping tightly when scared. When you increase the number of them it becomes even more clearly the case

@@PrimeTimeAquatics I have been watching your videos and other people's and that always comes up. I really hate that.😥 I have yet to find any. The store that gets them every once in a while I always miss getting them by a day or 2.💔 I figure when I am supposed to have them they will be there when I am.

i would be worries about the puffers harassing the gouramis because they’re really slow and also chocolate gouramis live in an entirely different environment to that of pea puffeds and they require very acidic waters and stained brown blackwater type of environments with very still water and a lot of dead plant material and woods meanwhile pea puffers prefer higher phs of around 6.8 to 7.8 and like their water to be pristine clean and will die to deteriorating water conditions

Why no mention of the noises sparkling gouramis make in the video. I was legit surprised not to hear that mentioned - or was it and I'm just crazy? My males make croaking noises when they're displaying. Especially after a water change when everyone seems to be a bit more feisty. Exact same fish as in your vids. It's one of the reasons I wanted them in the first place lol. I mean..talking fish! Who wouldn't? Right?

@@mrsprimetimeaquatics5497 You've both got to be waaay more busy than me lol. I've actually "lost time" in front of my various tanks many times. My fish think I'm a total creeper! But I was so excited first time I heard them croak, I was sure I'd imagined it 😂.

My pea puffer is generally pretty shy. He hasn't learned to associate me with food yet.

My pea puffer ONLY eats blood worms. That's it. I dropped a small pond snail in the tank and its now full grown chillin out.

They get lazy if you let them :D Mine eat small snails and bbs as well.

You can order them online. I got mine from flip aquatics and they are beautiful.
