PD Simplified : Spoked Wheels vs Alloy Wheels

Spoked wheels or alloy wheels? Is one really better than the other? That depends on what you ask of them. Almost all modern sports bikes have alloys while the offroaders have spoked wheels. Here's Shumi simplifying the wheels.

    IMHO, spoked wheels are also better at absorbing shocks and impacts, as the spokes work under tension, and steel has a high tensile strength. Hence, spoked wheels would be more durable off-road. Tires being the big unsprung component on the bike, this should be a big consideration.

    The reason why dirt riders use spoked wheels because when they jump from bigger heights, the load is distributed evenly to all the spokes, when it comes to alloys, the load would fall on 2-3 alloy spoked (don't know what do we call them ) which has more chances to bend.

  • @shu_mar

    @shu_mar

    Not 100% accurate. Spokes have flex so they can survive impacts slightly better than alloys. Alloys are far stronger but big impacts can break them.

    True! Spoke wheels have more give. So they’re easy to bend but mostly they can also bend back. Alloys are much stronger but once the threshold, they’re not elastic enough to bounce back.

    in spoked rim forces are more distributed throughout spokes than alloys, so they are better for off roading

    are there any reliable tube technology for spoked wheel tyres, where a tyre when punctured can be repaired at a fairly convenient time like in tubeless tyres.

    Talk about motorcycle seat comfort. Do they really affect the lower back & spine due to minute vibrations over a prolonged period of time? Do bum gets affect due to seating over a prolonged period of time, especially in pressure points? I know going over bad roads, patched roads, humps will affect our back. A topic which hardly anyone talks about. Unless someone has affected from it & stopped riding. Since I took the bike 3 years ago, I'm starting to have bubble in particular spots in bum, which comes regularly for 4 or 5 months. Untill that bubble pops, man it's painfull to sit. I even changed seat form, cover, shape, but it didn't work.

    Hey guys.. Alloy wheels being a product of casting and thus can be mass produced more easliy, aren't they supposed to be cheaper than spoke wheels? , which seems to have a lot more process involved including manual work. Or is the material cost difference so high that it offsets the processing cost..?

    The “difficulty” isn’t ABS. it’s the impact pushing the pads off the pistons in the calliper. Unfortunately it’s more common than it should be.

    @@shu_mar got it. Thanks. What I have noticed is that when I try to brake the front wheel of my single channel abs Apache 160 4v as soon as I cross the speed breaker, I feel the brake lever vibrating which should be the abs kicking in. But the thing is is there is no play in the lever and also the bike doesn't seem to slow down. Is it also because that while I do this the front wheel would be off contact with ground and thus messing up the abs?

  • @shu_mar

    @shu_mar

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@nishantdhonde7487 that’s not ABS. ABS won’t “lock” the lever. Knocking pads off pistons will.
