PCGS vs NGC: Which One is Better to Get your Coins Graded by?

Today I discuss what exactly is coin grading, what is PCGS and NGC, and what the differences are between the two companies. During the video I'll discuss pricing, slabs, quality, and why you should pick one over the other. Secret lesson you're buying the coin not the grading company and slab.

IMO, the graders at NGC, PCGS, and ANACS are all on equal footing as "graders". However, if selling them is what you are into, PCGS has a history of fetching top-dollar at auction.

I've been an NGC member for the last 6 years and would send off my coins to them for grading. As of this month, 1/23, I will no longer utilize NGC. The problem with NGC is their holders. As anyone who has submitted enough coins to NGC likely knows, there are always some you receive back from them with the labels not placed properly or protruding due to them not being glued properly (or the labels start to come loose and protrude over time). Or another issue is sometimes the prongs holding the coins are bent or damaged. Maybe I am being too particular, but I figure if I am going to take the time to spend the money and ship valuable coins off to NGC to put into my permanent collection I want a nice coin to be housed in a NICE looking holder. Now, on NGC's part, anytime I would send back coins in damaged holders for a re-holder (damage due to them, not on my part) they always would re-holder free of charge. Every single year for the last 4 years, every time I sent off a batch of coins I had to send in damaged holders for a free re-holder. It was almost a sort of cycle, I had to keep buying new annual memberships so that I could keep sending in my damaged holders to be replaced. Well, the final straw was this month when on my recent submission I sent back three coins (one with a protruding label and two with damaged prongs) and I requested the re-holders and described exactly what the problems were with the coins. When I received back my coins one was done properly and the two which needed replacement due to damaged prongs had damaged prongs once again after they performed the re-holder. I told myself that's it: I could put up with a mistake they will fix for free, but when they make more mistakes trying to fix original mistakes I have to call it quits. Time to make a clean break from NGC and move over to PCGS since they have superior holders. PCGS labels are held TIGHT since the holder is recessed over the labels and you won't see protruding labels as you will with NGC. Also, since the coins are held "in suspension" in the clear plastic holder there are no prongs to have to worry about being bent or damaged. Seriously, NGC has a problem with their quality control department. They focus on turnaround speed to the detriment of the quality of their product. I'll gladly pay a bit extra and wait a bit extra so that I no longer have the stress associated with getting damaged holders. When I open up my coin shipment, it should be an enjoyable experience adding the newly graded coins to my permanent collection. Instead, with NGC over the last few years, it has been less than enjoyable because I always have to monkey around with sending coins back and dealing with taht endless merry-go-round. Oh well, live and learn.....and I have learned that for particular collectors such as myself, PCGS is the way to go.

I prefer ungraded coins. But PCGS is the go to for pricing of any coin. Seen a few NGC coins over graded ( in my opinion). The other coin grading companies I do not trust enough. Coin grading is subjective anyway no matter what….especially at the higher end coins.

and hence why I do prefer to buy my coins graded. because if it's subjective I could be haggling with a private buyer over whether say a morgan is a MS62, 63, or 64 and waste my time, energy, and money. With a professionally graded coin there's a little less haggling going on over the grade of the coin and more on the price each of us is willing to agree upon.

your video showed up randomly so I watched it. I get the middle membership to both and the only thing i dont care for about NGC is sometimes they will bump a economy submission up to regular on. you without telling you and take credit out of your $150. NGC is faster I usually get my submissions back before the estimate. PCGS is picky and you will get more genuine grades that a lot of times NGC will straight grade. PCGS gives out too many altered color grades if you ask me, I also collect old ANACS white slabbed coins and ive had those go all kinds of ways when i send them in to get regraded by NGC or PCGS so I just keep them in the white slabs now.

A lot of great info and thanks for doing this video. A few points… You are right on everything. But the concept of grading was invented and first done by ANACS. Around 1972… they sold and are now a private company. You also need to include ICG. I know haters out there but each has their niche. If you deal and plan to sell the coins then PCGS is the winner hands down. NGC is best for selling but also great for collections - their case is slightly higher grade. ANACS is best for ancients and errors/varieties since they recognize more errors and varieties. You did not mention that if you pay for an error at PCGS and they don’t recognize it then you lose that money. Same for NGC. Finally, ICG is best for collectors on a budget but need to validate and protect coins. They are also best for moderns since they only cost like $12-$15 per coin. ICG was started for some former NGC graders. Grading is subjective and you will find opinions on who grades best but if you have a business that depends on lower populations of certain grades then they will not be given out even if they were probably warranted. Last comment is that ANCAS and ICG are also membership free and neither sells coins. Neither hosts pricing databases of their coins… they just verify and protect. If that’s what you need then save some money. PCGS wins across the board but it is so expensive now and takes months to get your coins back… NGC is also excellent and has some of the best graders out there but equally expensive. At least for me I can drive my coins to them in Sarasota and save on shipping - same for ICG in Tampa. Many factors to consider and it should be based on what you are grading most of the time… and why you are grading.

@@pennyondime95 I am pretty sure that the ANA (American Numismatic Association) was the first in 1972 - they graded coins and put them in sleeves and not a traditional slab. They used a photo certificate system. They also graded each side independently. They felt being the official coin collecting association that they should not be involved in grading so they sold the grading company to a private company in 1976. Then in 1983 ownership changed again. The Director of ANACS is also the editor of The Red Book - and has been since then. In 1989 they started following the style of some competitors and put their coins in the Traditional Plastic slabs as the others were doing. So, they started the concept and all the others followed them. Heck they wrote the book - “The Official American Numismatics Association Grading Standards” which is what all current grading is based on.

I've been a coin "Collector" for over 50 years. I have two blood relatives in the Coin business. And I've friendships and working relationships with nearly a dozen active Dealers. The biggest fact I've learned about the "Slabbed" coin industry is: it's mostly a scam! And rests on the idea that someone you've never met, who lives in "the Big City" far away, knows more about the "true condition" a coin then you! First fact: you can send the SAME COIN to three different grading services and get three totally different "Opinions" ! YUP! That's all these services can really offer is "an Opinion"! 😅 sad but true! And the big Investment Houses are making millions of dollars each year because of it. So, if your a genuine Collector, fine. It's your money 💰. Spend it anyway you like. BUT don't put too much stock in the "Opinions" of far away strangers that you've never even met.

That said if you sent them on 3/30 you should have them. I'd give them a call to have them expedite them. Their policy is if it's over 50 business days, it's delayed and can be expedited after that. NGC is my go to…especially for silver eagles…there is no comparison. I like NGC’s holders better and I like that the Smithsonian uses NGC for the largest U.S. coin collection in the world.

I terminated my membership with NGC. Their shipping department sent my coins to other collectors by mistake. I know this because another collector called me and told me he had a box of my coins. The other box I never heard anything about. NGC is blaming the post office, and filing an insurance claim. They have lied about all of this to me. I still have nothing about the lost coins and its been 4 months.

I can never understand why a KNOWLEDGEABLE collector would spend this ridiculous amount of money on certification a coin when they have already bought it and THEIR OPINION of what grade the coin is in is equal, if not better than a third party opinion? The only reason I see is that people have been brainwashed into believing a certain plastic grade on a coin is worth more than 2 people agreeing on a grade....after all, it does come down to the buyer and seller! How many people do you know try to UPGRADE a coin from one holder to another for that instant profit on the Grey sheet?...I rest my case!

Yes you buy the coin not the slab. That said a third party Authenticator allows for easier transactions, especially online or mail order. I would never buy a $3K coin ungraded. The third party allows me to sell said coin to a larger market who can trust the grade and value it has. Further not everyone is experienced in grading coins so there’s a larger risk of loosing lots more money on raw coins VW graded coins.

All a grading company is there for is your money, if you can't figure out what your coins are worth then you need a new hobby as for fake coins whoever sells them should be put in prison

I basically agree with you, User-MW, but even with the "so called, professionals", grading can be inconsistent, especially, imo, when cleaned coins are involved. Also, if you have your collection insured, I have very little faith an insurance company would take your opinion on the value of a coin..

NGC doesnt know how to grade properly & pcgs will keep your rare coin. 30 years in this bs coin collecting hobby and have yet to hear a positive word about either company from people who sent in rare coins. I have rare coins, ungraded, for sale. One being a 1967 Quarter 4.9g from the mint. I will never see the coin again if I send it in to be graded.
