PCem: A Brief Inroduction

Ғылым және технология

Original Title: Finally, A Good PC Emulator
PCem is a promising PC emulator that has made many advancements in recent years. This video serves as a basic introduction to PCem along with some reasons to use it, as well as some of it's drawbacks.
This is a new style of video I'm trying out, so let me know what you guys think about it and if I should make more like this in the future.

Similar to most emulators, PCem only works on high-end host PCs. I learnt it the hard way when I tried to run a Win98 game on my HP 14s laptop.

I’ve been using this emulator for a few weeks now, its great! I have my old early 90s compaq lte 4/25 still working, but I don’t like starting it up for every little bit of tinkering. So I actually used Norton Commander in dosbox and a serial null modem cable to fully clone my old compaq’s harddisk, then I created a virtual disk image and put the contents there. I installed dos into the boot sector. I used it a bit in virtualbox, but I wasn’t too happy with the performance. But now I can run my old computer without any problems inside PCem! In fact, I upgraded some of the specs a little, so I can run even more dos games from the pre 95 era. Highly recommended.

ngl that's a damn good idea. Best to backup decades old hard drive before any data corruption sets in. Also virtualbox is slow as heck. If your file is a VHD, run it in Hyper-V, it's way faster.

PCem is perfect for me, because I already have a real Pentium II 450 machine that used to be the family PC and I've already upgraded it with a pair of Voodoo 2s. The fast CPU issue is already covered in real hardware. I also have a second gen Ryzen CPU so it should be perfect for playing around with a virtual 486 system.

What throws me for a loop with PCem and 86Box is the overwhelming number of choices. LIke I found myself spending hours trying to ascertain the best 8088 machine to use -- pros and cons. Same for 286, 386, etc. There's not many guides that recommend one machine over another and explains why that choice is the best one overall compared to the rest. Like, take for example the tons of 8088 machines. I narrowed down to IBM PC or IBM XT, but all the guides I've seen they always choose IBM PC and not the XT even though the XT was the newer and beefier one.

If you setup up your hard drive to use a .vhd file you can use Diskpart on Windows. You can then use Diskpart in the command prompt and use the "select vdisk" command like this: "select vdisk file=(file pathname here)" then you can use "attach vdisk" to mount it and "detach vdisk" to unmount. This will mount the drive just like a native storage device in Windows. I believe you can also mount VHDs in Disk Management if you want a GUI way. If you just use a raw .img for your hard drive though I'm not aware of anyway to get data off of it directly. Hope this helps you out. May want to look up a guide on the Diskpart stuff for a better explanation.

You need a beefy system to emulate fast Pentiums and Pentium II systems. I had sound lag when emulating a Pentium 233 MMX with a Ryzen 2700x. I am going to try with my new 5900x and I heard that I should have better results. It makes sense, because 86box is emulating an entire custom built PC from running the real bios all the way to the real drivers for the emulated devices by talking to the ROM files from the devices themselves.

  • @enosunim

Well.. It is all true. But problem is you really need lots of old computers to get full experience. As for example if you use PIII machine and Windows 98 for running DOS games, and W98 have DOS-mode and great compatibility. But I found that it has already a lot of emulation in it. Real machine! Some soundcards only work inside windows dos-mode, and does not work in clear dos mode, because of how drivers work. Some soundcards also emulate soundblaster interface and so on. So in case of PCem, it is like having lots of hardware which will not fit in any house or flat. And the funny thing. I assembled old PC to play old games, the most old I could get was that PIII machine. I tried to run "Gender Wars" and it works alright in dosbox, but some interface lags were killing me. And what do you think? On REAL machine I got even worse results. The panel in game jumps while screen is scrolling. I was just laughing out loud literally. So much effort I put in old hardware and trying to make it work, and this PC even had USB so transferring files and drivers was not so hard as it is on older models. So now I guess I just get a modern CPU near 5GHz core limit and will use PCem.

The only thing really dying are the hard drives and, super unfortunately, CRTs. IDE to SATA adapters are your friend. Pre '99 parts are generally very reliable but capacitor plague era stuff can be a bitch. PCem can't emulate capacitor plague era stuff anyway. Most late '90s and earlier stuff is pretty easy to re-cap if needed. The best balance is to have real hardware for what your main system can't play at all. For me, that's early 3D games from 1995-1998 or so. A lot will simply crash under modern windows or will only work with super specific hardware combos. NFL Blitz on PC hates my graphics drivers and fails to find a suitable display mode even though the GPU supports it. The Pentium II 450 and Voodoo 2s shine in that department and it runs at an arcade perfect 60 FPS. It also runs most 486 era DOS games without issue. And there's DOSbox for the pre VGA stuff.

86box is based on PCem so it shares a lot of code. Didn't do a lot of comparisons between versions. Both emulators (or rather 86box since it is in active development whereas PCem is not) could use reworked video handling because the way it is done currently I would call barely usable from visual standpoint and is quite laggy.

@@zigmar2 well yes if you want to split hairs, VMs are not emulating the actual hardware of old pcs, and there are somewhat integrated with the host OS as i understand it, but nevertheless one can install older versions of windows in them and run a variety of the older games on them that otherwise one cannot do in win10 - i use VM to run Steel Beasts Gold, Grand Prix World, and iF/A-18 among other titles, I have tried PCEM and found it is just far too resource demanding, such that it can barely run for me any of the games i had on my P133 16mb ram back in te day. My big hope had been that i could use PCEM to run an early 2000s pentium and then play Janes F/A-18 but sadly that is just beyond its capabilities, i cant even get PCEM to run F1 Racing Simulation from 1997. It is though running Heavy Gear 1 in software mode okay so its not a total fail

  • @zigmar2

    @zigmar2

    2 жыл бұрын

@@divinuminfernum It's not splitting hairs. Emulation and virtualization are completely different. They do not achieve the same results for all games. There are many 80s and 90s games that require hardware from that era to run properly, hence VMs are not suitable for such titles. PCem is not suitable for 2000s (and very late 90s) games. The only proper 3D video cards emulated in PCem are voodoo cards (voodoo3 is the highest), so only games that are compatible with those would run properly; at best it'd be d3d6 and some (most?) d3d7 games. Emulation is obviously far heavier than virtualization. You need a processor with good single-threaded performance, like intel's 10th and 11th gen and amd's zen 3, for the best results, IF you want to emulate more powerful processors. I have a ryzen 2600 and can, more or less, emulate a pentium mmx 200 for most games, plus a voodoo 2, although a 166 is the safer choice. What are the requirements for F1 Racing Simulation? If it has a 3dfx option, use that. There's usually a separate exe for that, either in the installation folder or on disc. I suggest you visit vogons.org. It's one of the best places for old pc games discussions, guides and fixes.

LOL!! 4ghz!!?? I have NEVER seen that kind of CPU in my life. The max speed i5 I have is 3.3ghz and that is a 4 core unit. So this emulator is not as good as Virtual PC from M$ then? Cause that software emulates old PCs upto P2 233mhz as well and does so well enough to allow a full install of Windows NT with sound and even audio recording apps working. It is scary how software now requires you to get a small home loan to afford outrageous spec hardware that is not cheap to buy lol! SO most of my PC units will not run this then? I have like I said, i5 3.3ghz quad MAX. The rest are 3ghz or less i3 and intel core 2 duos..

There's a known issue where the instance will stop responding to mouse and keyboard input after being in a game for a few minutes, forcing you to reboot it. It will apparently be fixed once the input rewrite is complete.

promisng yes, but sadly i think the project is dead now - the developer has packed up and decided to no longer work on it is what i heard. Its a shame as it could have been good, in the current state though unless you have an extremely powerful computer it cant mid nineties pentiums anywhere as fast or efficiently as the actual systems. I set up pcem to run a few old games from back then and something like F1 Racing Simulation from 1997 was just too much for it on my host system which is 16gb 2.5ghz win 10 i7 with 2gb gfx - my pc is not the newest out there suffice it to say, but i would have thought it could emulate someting from the nineties. unfortunately no as PCEM doesnt appear to make any use of ones host gfx, but entirely emulate it from scratch i believe. VMware and Oracle Virtualbox are much better i find and emulate win95 and win98 and winxp for me much faster, though they dont offer much in the way of 3dacceleration there is a small amount there i can draw on. it seems the only way i can play Grand Prix World
