Incredible! how does it ensure the leads are bent to the correct length and they align with the PCB holes, if one lead bent I could imagine all hell would break loose

You would setup the job on the machine, based on the information the pcb designer gives you. Plus, some machines can measure, in real time, the exact distance between holes. Thus allowing axial components to be precisely bent to spec.

I think Those types of the resistor are not used anymore. nearly all of them use Surface Mount Resistor (SMD).

Through hole components are still common in some applications, open up a computer power supply and you are likely to find only through hole components. There are some advantages that through hole components have. Better cooling because they have more surface area exposed to air, through hole components are basically a free radiator on your PCB, also all else being equal TH components have higher power ratings for the same reason. Heavier components and many connectors must be through hole because SMD pads are not strong enough to hold them in place. Many circuits can be made on single side PCB if you use through hole components, which can have significant price advantage. For downside they are larger and require more board space, so that's a price disadvantage, but not if electrical isolation requirements already require sparse population of the board. Same for assembly, takes longer to assemble them and it's more complex, therefore it's more expensive. Still for power supplies through hole components win out and are widely used.

Also wirewound resistors are yet to be perfected in the SMT. They're expensive as well have a higher failure rate as of yet!

They are often used in high power radio equipment, where the resistors are dissipating heat. For reasons already mentioned in other applications, having the component as SMT will cause the component to get hot, maybe even hot enough to melt the solder and fall off the board.
