This is a recorded playthrough of a first-person adventure game developed by Sierra and released in 1996. It was very clearly designed to compete with Myst, as the atmosphere and world design of Lighthouse resembles Myst in many ways. In fact, according to the lead designer Jon Bock, Ken Williams (president of Sierra at the time) called Bock into his office one day, took out a copy of Myst, and asked him "Can you do this?". Bock said yes, and development began.
Probably the biggest strength of Lighthouse is its visuals. It has some beautiful environments, oozing with pre-rendered 90's charm. Unfortunately, the puzzles don't hold up as well. Many of them are pretty obtuse, and it is sometimes possible to lock yourself into unwinnable "walking dead" situations if you don't do some things in the correct order. So, in other words, classic Sierra game design.
Overall, though, Lighthouse has a lot of charm to it. Even with the frequent crashing (which I experienced throughout all versions of the game I attempted to play, including third-party versions designed specifically to run on modern machines) I still can't help but love the detailed world and visuals. I recommend giving this one a shot (although maybe with a walkthrough by your side just in case).

My dad played this when I was 3/4 years old. I dont know if this is a false memory, but I remember a black Flying Dinosaur with red eyes painting a picture in a lighthouse / tower. Maybe it was this game, or the game where the little angel baby is trapped in a cage, I cant remember.

This game is serious and dark. No sense of humour at all. The world is empty and lonely. The Dark Being is not only one creepy character. Lyril with her electrical glitches gives uneasy feeling as well. Were children the target audience for this game? I doubt it, this game is more suitable for adults. For mature people who like thriller and drama genres. Having said that, the start of the game is interesting. That mystery and suspension.

Just finished the whole video. Going through all of this again is so exciting ! This game is a master piece. Hands down the most remarkable experience I ever had in a video game. Even after two decades I still remember from the top of my head every single detail. I guess it took me an insane amount of time playing it over and over again to finally beat it. There was no such thing as KZread so after beating it for the first time I did it all over again taking screen shots and compiled a walk thru in a Word document. I might still have it in my old backup CDs. Man nostalgia hits hard on this one. Too many history and memories.

Whoa ! I figured out every chapter and was approaching the finale! Did the troubleshooting and logic puzzles to make my way all the way to the final end of this game. However, when I was concluding the final details to finally complete this game there was this persistent runtime error. There was nothing I could do. I couldnt make it through a cutscene and into the end of the game. I was stuck on a switch on the tracks! Last I played this game was around 2010 and it was easy because I did it all in 2005 when I was in highschool. I am finally finishing the game ! Very cool game by the way. Very technical and awesome puzzles. Thank you for this Video Post ! ! ! !!

I always enjoyed adventure games much more if I had a walkthrough to refer to. And I was glad I had one for this game. My big frustration was that at the final part of the game, I was missing one piece of that super gun thingy you have to build. I revisited all the places in the walkthrough and never found that missing piece. As a result, I never finished the game or got to see the ending. Now, more than 25 years later, I’m going to finally see it thanks to this awesome play-through!

I got this along with Shivers as I have been wanting it for a long time. As with Shivers I have the original game. I never got to play it to the finish because there was some glitch in it as far as I remember with some troll or something and there was no way to get any further. There may have been a patch for this but at the time I didn't have internet. Back then it was also hard to buy pc games in my country they would usually have these floppies where it was just a small part of the game and we were never able to buy the full game. Like The Munsters. The full games we could buy was very very expensive. I'm really happy you made this or I would still be trying to light the lamp outside with my lighter at the Lighthouse;) Sierra was the best of all!!

He’d keep a spiral notebook full of notes on EVERYTHING he comes across in these games, in case it’s needed for a puzzle later. I, on the other hand, got as far as the volcano (after MONTHS of playing) and could never solve it. 😅 The only reason I got that far was because I would watch my dad play-so some of the puzzles I saw solutions for already-and he would give me pointers and advice on how to play and figure out puzzles while he did. Back in the day, I bypassed all this by opening my own portal in Dr. Krick's lab, doing all the steps to get that medallion off the dead guy's neck, gunning it back through the portal, and closing it before the workstation overloaded again. Then I completed the whole puzzle box in one shot, and simply returned to the Tower after I got that Jet Gun piece from the basement here. Every single puzzle obviated made this game that much more palatable.

The game is set up in US. Which means the player should have a firearm from the beginning. When leaving house he takes a gun, not an umbrella. And shoots that poor Dark Being at first sight. Why to spend whole game assembling a nerdy shrinking gun? Then player goes to parallel world and saves Martin from Birdman. Dr. Kirk already became friends with him. The main goal of the game would be helping priests to recover. Fix the life support of Lyril. The original ending leaves Lyril struggling in her world. Priests were smart guys, how come all of them sunk with the ship. They have solar panels at the temple and still use a steam engine for the ship?! It would be more interesting if some of them survived and main focus of the game was recovering the parallel world.

I think the first CD had a lot of installation fluff and preview videos of other games of the time. If you buy the game on gog.com, the download is about 850MB, slightly more than what would fit on a standard CD-ROM.

Actually, not following the Dark Being into the portal is better. Since you have to come back to the lighthouse anyhow, you'll eventually have to create your own portal into the other world. There are some mistakes you can make though that can't be reversed.

45:47 I wanted to like Lyril, but I couldn't get past the fact her broken machine-assisted speech reminded me of Shodan. Now, I'm playing through this game again on SCUMMVM and noting how far pre-rendered graphics have come along in the past 20 years. Her hair and face are lacking texture-mapping, and her elocution is not fully animated.

Man I want to play this game again so bad I haven't played it since 2010 I think (on an old system). I didn't think it would be possible but I'm going to look into SCUMMVM to play it. This game scared the hell out of me as a kid which is why it was so satisfying figuring out the puzzles and getting through it. My favorite memory from this game is doing that teleporter puzzle where you have to replace the parts if you fail. I was always so excited when I got it right and the portal opened. This game was also how I learned how to open a dial lock as a kid

@@nickpayne2689 There are instructions for getting it working in SCUMMVM if you still have the original CDs. You might be better off shelling out a few dollars and buying it on GOG though, so it works "right out of the box". As for that teleporter puzzle, I always built the portal to the beach from the Lighthouse at the beginning rather than follow the Dark Being, and then did a speedrun to get that necklace off the dead professor's neck and return to the portal before it closed. Then I could solve the puzzle box and not have to return later, skipping the teleporter puzzle entirely.

@@intylab That's a good idea, I never thought the portal stayed open long enough to do that! I remember I used to forget to grab the seashells and stuff in Dr. Krick's house and realize that I had to go all the way back to get them. I stopped this video a few minutes in because I realized I wanted to play it again after seeing your comment. I thought it would be too much of a hassle to get it running on my system but it sounds like a lot of people are getting it to work. Funny enough, I'm pretty sure I still have the original Lighthouse discs. But my pc and my laptop don't have disc drives, so I'm probably just going to grab a copy from GOG and get it set up. I downloaded the files from the link in the video description from internet archive, but the GOG setup will probably be easier. Cheers

49:30 Obligatory Sunday School lesson. To summarize, "Mankind in his zenith trashed the environment and left mass suffering and death in his wake, leaving only a few survivors. Now, a Dark Being is repeating the mistakes of the past (greed, ambition, cruelty, and so on) and is threatening our world." Typical backstory. Did I miss anything?

It always annoyed me how dumb and slow your character was. When the baby is being kidnapped, you just stand there instead of stopping the monster. When the bird man is reaching for the lever to lock you out, you could easily go through the door.
