PB Law #5: Sprint Once In A While

In a world where danger lurked around every corner, your ability to run was a strong indicator of whether you would live long enough to pass your genes down to the next generation. (Note to Nietzsche: That which didn’t kill Grok made him stronger). Avoiding a charging beast to save your life, or surging forward to catch a different beast for dinner, the net effect was still survival. A combination of the hormonal events that occurred simultaneously and the resultant gene expression within fast twitch muscle made sure that the next time this happened Grok could sprint a little faster.
Do some form of intense anaerobic sprint bursts several times a week. This could be as simple as six or eight (or more) short sprints up a hill, on the grass, at the beach… or repeated intense sessions on a bicycle (stationary, road or mountain bike). These short bursts also increase human growth hormone release (HGH is actually released in proportion to the intensity (not the duration) of the exercise).

I’ve been on a extremely intense hiit sprint program and I think I have been pushing too hard up to 15 to 20 full blast sprints at around 100 yards each 2 times a week and I feel weak and depleted, and my knees are hurting, I think I’ll pull back and try your strategy, thank you very much for this

This advice goes against what the fitness industry wants us to do.....spend money and spend a bunch of time at the gym! One of the many reasons why most people fail at fitness long term. Sustainability isn't there due to failure and lack of understanding of what it really takes! Plus the fitness people are selling the other. Great video!

Exactly. Instead of doing one exercise session for 30 minutes to an hour only two to three times a week, I have been doing micro workouts (10 to 15 minutes), two to three times a day, nearly every day.

I LOVE HIIT. There are so many ways to do this. Short sprints followed by rest, riding a bike slow for 5 mins then fast for 1 min, choose a variety of weight exercises and use medium weight going through each exercise in quick succession resting 5 minutes after performing all exercises.

As a former sprinter and long jumper I get injured very fast when I go back to some of my training routines...BUT: Once in a while it is just a boost for body and soul. So true. Problem for me is: I can sprint faster than my heart rate goes up ;-)

I sprint more often then not, mixed in with lighter straight leg deadlifts. People had to sprint without stretching..

You have to 'test the system' every now and again. How fast can joints be moved through a range of motion. How much force can be produced as quickly as possible. How well can the lungs, heart, liver, respond the recover from this output.....without testing, the body learns to not use it's capabilities and wastes....

At the end of this excellent video, you list sprinting in addition to weightlifting 2 days per week & low-level cardio two days per week, like the sprinting is its own separate day. So by "sprinting" do you mean one 50 yard dash & go home? Or do you mean a sprinting routine? For example: Ten 1-minute sprints with 30-seconds of resting in between sprints?

Mark said sprints of ten to thirty seconds’ duration, followed by rest of one, two, or three minutes, depending on your level of fitness and adaption. He said that he does five or six sprints of fifteen to thirty seconds with two-minute rest in between each sprint. Do this once a week. Go all out in your sprints. Its not likely that you can sprint for a minute, unless you’re an elite athlete. Your form breaks down and you run the risk of injury. Watch “HIIT vs HIRT” with Brad Kearns, and read “The Definitive Guide to Sprinting” on Mark’s Daily Apple for lots of good information.

If you have bad knees but still want to run, try hills. My knees aren't great but they can handle hills. I know it's not for everyone. My knees are bad but not bad enough to where I can't go for shirt runs. But full out flat sprints kill my knees while hill sprints don't bother me at all.

Age 57, lifting 4 days a week, but cycle upper body and lower body, still hitting everything twice. Is this ok, or should I hit everything at once twice a week? Thoughts?

I agree with almost all he says except this. I believe that over the age of 50 sprinting all out is not a good idea. It puts a lot of stress on your heart and could cause some to experience a fib attacks I work out at around 110 BPM once or twice a day

  • @wallstreetoneil

110 is a good base pace for the 50 to 65 crowd on let's say a stationary bike/elliptical for a 30-minute session - but you can then safely, in my opinion, do 30 to 45-second intervals where you up the load/resistance and increase your pace and BPM to 125-140. Obviously, if you have a medical condition, you should speak with your Dr first.

Don't listen to the specialicts. I started with 51. My knees have been cracking in the beginning too. I HIIT twice a week, Intervalls of 8. My knees are okay now, the muscles grew so everything gets its amount of requierd space. I also can sit on my knees again, I couldn't do it for year because of a torn meniscus.
