Pay Attention: How "forest bathing" clears the mind and body

In our series, Pay Attention, we explore ways to sharpen our focus and re-capture our attention from distracting technology. Americans spend an average of 93 percent of their time indoors or inside a car, which means just 12 hours a week is spent outside. There is mounting evidence that spending time in nature is good for your body and your brain. That led us to explore a popular activity prescribed by Japanese physicians for years known as "forest bathing." John Dickerson reports.

This was common knowledge when I was a young child - born 1957. The Drs prescription for us when we were sick was to go outside as soon as possible.

Yeah, that's what it was called when I was a kid...sadly people are so surgically attached to their smartphones and other tech that they don't think about getting outside and just be in the moment, someone has to tell them...it's sad really...

It isn't the same as just getting fresh air. I exercise outdoors daily and it's not the same as forest bathing. Forest bathing has no destination or goal, unlike hiking or exercising. It's more like meditation.

@@headphonic8 Well getting fresh air can be just sit at park bench and immerse yourself in sounds, sight etc of nature, no need for goal.

I I’ve in a high rise apartment block but I’ve surrounded myself with pot plants and an indoor fountain. I burn incense and candles and don’t have a television. My apartment feels soothing and lovely.

Re-connecting with nature is one of the most powerful things you can do for a healthy mind. 😊 It's so easy, there is no right and wrong, just get out and explore wherever and whenever you can!

That's lovely...but sadly most here in the US are so glued to their cell phones and other tech that they don't take the time to get out like that and just be present...I try to do that as often as I can, because I love being outdoors...the US is backwards in alot of ways

Instead of dwelling where only the works of men can be seen, where the sights and sounds frequently suggest thoughts of evil, where turmoil and confusion bring weariness and disquietude, go where you can look upon the works of God. Find rest of spirit in the beauty and quietude and peace of nature. Let the eye rest on the green fields, the groves, and the hills. Look up to the blue sky, unobscured by the city’s dust and smoke, and breathe the invigorating air of heaven. Go where, apart from the distractions of city life, you can give your children your companionship, where you can teach them to learn of God through His works and train them for lives of integrity and usefulness.-The Ministry of Healing, 366, 367 (1905).
