The thing is, gloves are great for protection from finger moisture and acid, which is good for the leather but not much else on here. You will notice the expert does not touch the leather often. The downside is that it prevents some fine motor control which risks tearing the thin fabric in the hat and such. So I see either way being justified.

I worked on the set and know the truth about many of these stories. They couldn't get a real expert in that new about these items from the Pope within the time we were shooting. When they would shoot they would announce it to the public. And on the days they would shoot huge lines of people would line up with all different sorts of items. It was my job to walk through the line and pick the most interesting or the most valuable items that I could see. Then I separate those people from all the other people because more than likely they will be on the show. I remember pulling her out of the line because she was claiming she had the Pope's slippers. But anyway we couldn't get this guy in in time. So one of the regulars was brought in with all the research he could find on what the Pope's slippers and hat were made out of. But a week later. This woman was asked to come back to the actual pawn shop with the slippers so a real expert could look at them. It was proven that these were in fact slippers made for some Pope. That this style of slipper is only made for Pope's and no one else. The expert was able to date these items to a certain time. And with the date on the cap they were pretty much positive that it was probably in fact the Pope she was saying it was or maybe a small chance that it was the pope before. I guess this lady was later contacted by someone from the Vatican and these items were purchased

Pope Leo XIII was not a saint so these are not classed as relics, but that being said they should be treated with upmost respect and reverence. How sad if these are authentic to end up in a sleezy pawn shop. I pray that lady will honor them by returning them to the Holy See.

Something is fishy. If her aunt was a nun, she wouldn’t be allowed to keep these. Nuns take a vow of poverty and are forbidden from owning property. Furthermore, no nun worth her habit, would be so dismissive of these. Pope Leo XIII was one of the greatest popes in history.

Actually the vow of poverty means you cannot come into ownership of items on your own accord but if it is a gift and it is something like this that is gifted to you by a priest it is considered very rude to turn it down and most nuns would not dare to decline a gift of such holyness. Furthermore while nuns often think highly of the pope they do not idolize people so it makes sense that she would not have made a huge deal about it because she is taught that her lord is king and the pope is a mere mortal who speaks for her lord so she most likely wouldnt have made it a huge deal

Its a very common belief that nuns live for god and taking the vow of poverty means they cant claim ownership of items but this is a misconception. Nuns are allowed ownership of items they just must not hold those items to a value thats higher than their lord so the vow of poverty is more about not valuing the items they do own it has been misconstrued throughout the years and people have made the understanding of the vow of poverty that is simply not true or correct

They may take a vow of poverty but they are allowed gifts ,especially if a priest gives them a gift they're not going to turn it down and it's not like the nun is trying to turn them into money,she would have kept them for religious purposes and never in her wildest dreams would the nun ever have thought about selling the slippers
