Ginger was great entertainment throughout the entire process.

Sprinkle some borax or boric acid onto the sand before you put your pavers down. It knocks the ants back and keeps them from turning it into a huge colony and undermining the pavers

My father always mixed the sand with cement powder which would eventually harden up enough that the ants wouldn't be able to carry it away. Don't know what the ratio was, but something like 10:1.

Indeed it is called stabilised sand (stabilisé in French). Here it is always used. Sand is not done for longevity issues​@@John-ou4rm

I love how you dealt with the water access cover. Probably not "approved", but if I worked for the water department, I'd have no problem with it. It's well marked and access is dead simple!

I enjoy your videos. I reside in Upstate New York where we have extreme freeze and thaw cycles at the beginning and end of winter. When we have pavers, cement or blacktop that surrounds gas entrance pipes, we use foam and schedule 40 PVC to sleeve the gas service pipe. The frost cycles can cause the hard pavement (in your case pavers) to rub and - over the years - eventually wear away and cause a break in the gas service pipe. Excellent job! P.S. I also admire Ginger.

The most noticeable aspect of this project is the grade. And you nailed it! ...looks like a sheet of glass. Yards, gardens, pool decks, etc. Require a proper slope(for drainage), foundation(soil composition: depending upon intended purpose/use). Random undulations don't work in this specific situation. Driveways and pathways frame yir landscape and its "style". I have a neighbor who hauls rock, sand, dirt asphalt...(Fred Flintstone). He taught me a lot about dirt, soil, loam. I ain't no landscape architect. His yards are immaculate! Beautiful flowersl shrubs, trees and rocks. Some rocks are pretty cool. He comes across them occasionally and will bring them home . He totally redesigned his grounds. I don't have that talent. Hey, what am I talking about...? Great drivewayl

Came out real nice. I remember doing the cement on a second driveway at my Dad's home on the coast of NC. It would get so hot that no one could work in the afternoon. We would work 6am to noon. Then spend the afternoons at the beach!

There's just no limit to what you can do..and ginger is a big help as well..that drive way looks flawless ..i also have experience with concrete but at 68 years old i don't think i could do it by myself..at least i know how it's done ..thanks friend and ginger too..cheers 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

Hey Thanks. I grew up learning concrete the hard way with mixing small batches in an old Sears mixer. That was the easy part as my father also made me and my brothers load the sand and gravel at the gravel pit as well. Countless shovel loads to fill the bed of a pickup.

You are absolutely correct about the pavers. A boatload more work and money. You did a great job on those pavers, I've seen "professionals" skip the last and crucial step, the sand. You put a lot of work into that project, nicely done.

That looked fantastic when you were done. You always make everything look easy. It was also cool to hear how you could save money by buying the bricks when they were on sale in getting your sand for free. Driveways are so expensive to install. My sister lived in a home for years and the city came out and said she could no longer have a gravel driveway because she was violating the code. She told them her driveway had always been gravel and they told her she was wrong. There are going to find her a lot of money each day. She couldn't afford a new driveway. She found some old photographs that could be dated that showed her house with a gravel driveway years ago and they approved her driveway.

City and county/regional ordinances vary. State building codes too. Federal law and the NFPA (?) are consistent. HOAs and their compliance commissioners can be really ugly Communists. You can: (1)Agree to and appease their demands; (2)Creatively "re-interpret" the wording of the covenant; (3)Purchase a couple dozen Krispy Cream donuts; (4) Apply for a variance. Depending upon yir sister's age and/or economic ability, there maybe funds available for mediation. One thing to keep in mind, if the property is sold: all codes and conditions must be brought up to date. Sometimes the buyer includes special conditions (such as a new water main and sewer encorporated, termite treatment, etc.) prior to "closing", within a delineated period, and/or have funds in escrow for exigencies. I've seen a few, but I ain't no realtor (I bet they have stories). Yeah, maybe some local real estate agent would have some information and have some tricks up his/her sleeve.

In America, land of the free, you even get forced to cut your lawns to a certain length. I would go mental if the council turned up and told me to get a new driveway unless they were paying for it. I would rather go to prison I am serious. M

@@ericconnor8419 HOA( homeowner associations) are the root of most of the personal land use problems. People want to live in a nice house and have neighbors that take care of their yards as well. So they're convinced that signing an HOA agreement with all the fellow landowners is the answer. They generally work out really well for the first 3 to 5 years with a brand new home. But then new people move in and/or want to make changes to the yards, landscaping, house exterior and all those generally violate HOA agreements. So people quickly find out that their neighbors have more control over their property than they do themselves. I do not live in an HOA nor would I ever choose to. I personally would not buy any property in an HOA. I could do whatever I wanted essentially with my yard with some limitations. Those would be on a city legal level. These generally mean I can't have one meter tall weeds in my front yard, can't turn my entire front yard into metal recycling yard , etc. But that doesn't control me as far as I can paint my house. Any color I want, unlike an HOA. As far as your statement about changing the laws in the US. We have a major issue that we do not take any laws away. Instead we just add more. So the land of the free only gets more restrictive as time goes on.

@@sixtyfiveford when I bought a place I explicitly wanted a no HOA place. Some HOAs I saw even outlawed having your garage door open unless your car was entering or existing it. That's nuts to me. The major downside where I was looking is that every development built in the '80s or later had an HOA. So I live in 50 year old tract housing. But I don't have some board telling me what I can and cannot do with it. Just 1 annoying neighbor that likes to leave notes about things they find offensive.

Glad to see some DIY projects.. brings back memories of the used motor oil wood stain and pallet shed build..Cheers..

Fantastic looking paver driveway. Having done one myself (with larger pavers) I understand the immense amount of time and prep it requires to do. I see you are making the choice of sand for packing material. HOWEVER if you want to make certain it all stays interlocked & weeds don’t start growing use SAND MIX (Sand & Portland Cement Mix) they sell for $5 a bag 50-60lb so mixing it yourself won’t save much. I also recommend you finish it with a concrete sealer to protect the beautiful finish you achieved. The retaining wall in itself takes a lot to setup as well so Really I can’t say enough about how great that turned out.

Very nice! Looks much better than concrete. I did a similiar walkway in front of my house, but it was curved so I had to cut every brick along the edges of both sides. I also did my wife's house patio, but this time no curves! We have a brick manufacturer HC Muddox in Sacramento, and once a year they have sale to get rid of excess inventory or 'old models', and they are 'almost free' like 5-10 cents. They sell them by the pallets. I also ran a concrete driveway to the back of one of my houses, and it ran next to the gas meter like you have. I put pipe around it concreted into the ground so a car can't accidently run into it and rupture the gas line. It might even be a code / law requirement, but in any case, very important safety item.

At my bro's house, in Southern California, I helped him run a gas line for a BBQ. The only code requirements were for: 1 how deep buried. But, since it was in a pool deck, there were additional limitations to proximity to the pool. It was encased in the cement deck, so it required a green plastic sleeve over the iron pipe. Also, it wasn't underneath a driveway, which probably would have required it to be buried much deeper. So no heavy load would ever be on it. It was fully code compliant and passed inspection.

Fabulous job!!👌👍 This old DIY guy misses the days of projects like that.

1/4 of the way through I just kept thinking I should have just poured cement and I'd be done.

Recently laid marble tiles in the back yard. One thing that help compact soil is water. nice job

Looks amazing! I’ve been considering this on the side of my garage. I extended my rear concrete deck like this years ago and it’s definitely a lot of work. Nice thing in my area is you don’t have to have a permit to do pavers because they consider it landscaping.

Cool . I enjoyed it .Looks real good. I used to do a lot of dry lay pavers and stone .We got to choose what jobs we went on so i tried to do more stone . We put sealer on when done , it seemed to help with the oil drops. We did a lot of concrete driveways too. As soon as we could walk on them we sealed with Diamond clear . I just got my plate compactor back today .Loaned it to family a very long time ago and just got it back .

You're a better man than me Charlie Brown. I helped pave a short section of sidewalk years ago and swore I'd never do it again. My back still hurts. Your driveway is beautiful though. The oil spots give it character.

I was so exhausted after this and never though it would end. I didn't even want to put out the video as I was so sick of it. It took months for me to finally forget how much work it was.

Very nice job. You can also seal the pavers which I have done in the past at shopping malls and it works pretty well.

I debated sealing and still on the fence. I hate water based paints etc and that's all I'm seaming to find. My fear is it'll flake and look worse in 3 years than if I just left it alone.

You would probably be better off using a concrete sealer, try your local concrete supplier

Turned out really nice!

I did a small patio with old reclaimed 4×4×8 paving bricks. And oh boy was it a lot of work and it was maybe 1/10th the size of what you've done here. I always joke that the bricks were free and that still wasn't cheap enough.

I've always loved the look of pavers. Great job. Can you do cobblestone next, lol.

For heavy duty, trucks etc, put 2 inches of cement under the pavers. A friend said to put lime between the cracks to stop weeds growing.

I had to follow a contour and the base under the sand needs to be at the proper grade/level anyway. So all the pipe is doing is spacing a proper sand thickness.

Amazing job. I did a small back yard patio out of 2x3 foot pavers. Man were they heavy. Got it done and it lasted for years and I think it's still there after we left 15 yrs ago.

It was a luck thing. There was a lot of spring run off/flooding so all the cities had piles of sand with sand bags for you to self load at most city parks. It was a lot of shoveling to fill 210 bags by myself. I do have local sand and gravel pits that used to sell it for $20 a ton(could be more now days). They're self load as well unless the loader operator just happens to be there working on a real customer(dump truck load). I ended up using 5 tons of sand.

Pavers looks better than concrete I think, you done well. Good idea to drill some shallow holes in the edge pavers to make them stay there. I worked for a landscaper once and he charges extra for every cut. Ginger is a good helper by the looks

Interesting proposition. I am looking to redo my driveway at some point as it is asphalt. I always liked the look of bricks. I may very well start looking when home Depot does a sale on them.

I debated doing the entire thing in asphalt many times. For some reason nobody does asphalt here in Utah though. No-one has asphalt driveways etc. We do have cement factories here though so maybe that's why. People only do concrete or stamped concrete for driveways here.

@@sixtyfiveford asphalt is not that great and requires fairly decent maintenance such as sealing it every year etc etc. It also warps with heat and does not like oil very much. Here all 3 methods for driveways are used and asphalt seems to be popular in my area, however I prefer concrete or even better a full brick setup like you have. At the end of the day I do feel asphalt looks cheap.

​@@Engineerd3dI disagree entirely. A well kept beautiful black asphalt pavement looks way better than crackrete ever could. I grew up in a wealthy area and the million dollar homes only ever had the blackest asphalt you could imagine. Done right, asphalt is gorgeous and in colder climates has the benefit of being hotter and melting ice quicker when the sun comes out. Nothing beats pavers though.
