Paula Rego (1935-2022) was a Portuguese-born painter and printmaker particularly known for her paintings and prints based on storybooks and is widely considered one of the most significant contemporary artists of her generation. Born in Lisbon, Rego moved to London with her husband, the artist Victor Willing, in the 1950s, where she continued her artistic education at the Slade School of Fine Art.
Rego's work is highly regarded for its powerful and often unsettling imagery, which explores themes such as gender, sexuality, and the human condition. Her use of allegory and storytelling has made her work highly accessible and engaging to a wide range of audiences, and her legacy continues to inspire and influence contemporary artists and art lovers alike.

As an Artist, I appreciate your heartfelt, quietly passionate dialogues with the works that you represent. Curators, gallery owners and managers are so important in the entire process of the art world.

Thank you so for your curatorial view point. I felt I could almost know this unusual and deeply different artist. You presented her view point eloquently, (it’s sad she is no longer here.) Not an easy thing to convey, the way another person views the world. Her view point as created in her prints is quite dark and I believe even deliberate and meaning to perhaps evoke a certain revulsion. I am in awe of how she has employed a type of cartoon style, as in the way of political artist satirists, to imbue her characters with genuine real and intense emotion and humanity.
