I've seen a couple of reviews of these pastels so far and all are glowing, but no one mentions the lightfast data and how it compares to Sennelier and Caran D'Ache.

Hi syndia I have these oil pastels already I bought them some months ago and I love them,as you pointed out they blend very well and they are quite cheap from Amazon in England. And the colours are very pretty and buttery. Nice to see you back.

I have tried all the sets from Paul Rubens and I honestly dont like them. In my experience, they look like a good pastel, right off the bat, but when actually working with them..... nope. As a budget brand Mungyo Gallery Soft Pastels are still the best, but my go to, are the Neopastels from Caran d'Ache. They are perfect! Not super soft but creamy, not that they are hard at all, they are firm. The consistency is the same throughout ALL the colors. No patchiness, no crumbles, no translucent colors. They are all opaque, they blend and mix incredibly well, no issues with the greens, purples or light colors, and their color palette is amazing. I have the entire set, but you can do with 15 to 18 colors, maybe less, cause they do blend to create new colors effortlessly! Plus they are sold open stock. For me Neopastels are hands down the best oil pastel. ❤

Oh yeah? Why do you not like working with them? I haven't painted a whole piece yet.

one thing that stands out about those pastels is how vibrant the colors are. i have 72 set, alao have mungyo, macaron paul rubens and pentels to compare with, and by far haiya seem the most pigmented out of all sets. i prefer the consistency of old paul rubens and mungyo much more tho and feel like haiya doesnt layer up as well compared to other brands. still, if you just figure out the layering and the right paper for them (they do need a tooth), you can achieve the most vibrant, bold results with those colors.

Hi, Thanks for the review. I recently purchased the same set. The color names are on the label but the size and font are VERY HARD TO READ. A magnifying glass is needed for some eyes. The letters are sometimes the same color as the label which makes some letters disappear. A mystery for me is that when it got warm in my area (Phoenix, AZ), they got very oily, but just clear oil "sweat", not pigment colored oily - very strange. They seem to have recovered but it was strange. Enjoy your new oil pastels!

Thanks Syndia for this very detailed review and the close-ups particularly. The quality looks very good but one of the problems with this set as with some other makes is the colour range. I would just want to query the multiplicity of closely related reds compared with the lack of range and depth of greens. The latter seem to have lost out to the point where the landscape type of artist is likely to struggle. That is why this kind of detailed review is so useful. I think I will pass on this set, thanks to you.

I love these reviews! Have you tried Mungyo water-soluble oil pastels? I'm really curious about them, and how they compare to their Gallery pastels.

Thanks for this review, Syndia! I love my Senneliers and my Mungyo Gallery oil pastels, and these look really good, too. I admit that I didn't really like the first version of the Paul Rubens, but this new version seems really promising. Off to order a set to try now! Thanks again! ❤❤

Hi, thanks. I have 3 questions: 1. Lightfastness of these? 2.with soft pastels there are pencils for details etc..for oil pastels what do you do? Sharpen pastel sticks? 3. Do you need to blend to smoothie finish? Cant you leave a bit painterly, not over rubbed? Thank you.

Does anyone know why Amazon US doesn't seem to sell these anymore? I ordered them and will be returning because they are very, very oily and arrived damaged. I wanted to try again, but, as I said, they no longer seem to be available on Amazon...

I wondered this too. UK artists on KZread have been showing the set of 72 of this HAIYA version, apparently provided to them by the manufacturer. I was disappointed awhile ago to see that I could only find the 48 set here. The other day I went online to see if the set of 72 was finally available, and I could no longer find any HAIYA sets at all - just the regular Paul Rubens oil pastels.

@@charlottesmom Thanks for the info! I looked and saw what looked like the Haiya set of 48 (all the pictures show the Haiya set) but everything in the listing only says Paul Rubens, which is making me slightly wary that I might get sent the regular ones. And now I see the new “Lightwish” oil pastels everywhere with some interesting color selections… so many options!

Bonjour ! 😔 google traduction (my english is bad) : Hello and congratulations on your magnificent painting! I bought the same pastels recently and I love using them, but I have a question: how to properly store them? Indeed, it is sometimes 22 degrees in my apartment even this winter because it is facing south and some people are losing oil... And soon, I will probably return to the South of France where I am from . I don't know how I'm going to make sure they don't melt during transport or in the summer when it can easily be 42 degrees outside and very hot inside too (during heatwaves). I can't put on air conditioning because I will still be renting... Do you know of completely insulated boxes to make them resist the heat? Can we put them in the fridge? I don't want to lose this beautiful box of pastels...

J'aimerais tellement avoir une réponse à cette question... Si quelqu'un passe par là... Je repars dans 3 mois et demi dans le Sud de la France et mes pastels vont y fondre alors que la boîte est presque neuve, récemment achetée.
