Gosh so many amazing moments. When Connell breaks down after the Debs, knowing he ruined something incredibly special for people who didn't matter, when they see each other at Trinity for the first time, the therapy scene, News Years party, the ending... So many more! Incredible performances and direction. Lenny is a master at realism.

I'm glad Daisy got some praise for the photoshoot scene in Sweden, but can we appreciate how utterly phenomenal Paul was as Connell in the therapy scene? It's so ridiculously hard to play grief and regret to that degree. I've never seen anybody play an introvert so convincingly and remain so magnetic to watch. he's an incredibly gifted actor.

There are so many incredible moments in the series, but I keep thinking about the scene where Marianne and Connell are discussing their futures. Connell jokes with Marianne asking whether she would pretend not to know him if they went to college together... and a beat later you can just see his face as the irony and cruelty of what he just asked sinks in. Connell’s visible yet veiled guilt, and Marianne’s awareness of it all as she delicately but unflinchingly answers, no she would never pretend to not know him. Such a heartbreaking, brilliant moment. I’m in awe of how they were able to communicate so much with so little. Incredible acting.

Loved the relationship between the two leads. Also really loved the realistic portrayal of the family abuse Marianne faced and seeing her struggle with feeling damaged and not loveable because of it and how that seeps into her sexual life. Hopefully this will help girls with these issues feel more self compassion and perhaps less judgement from others. And love that Marianne encourages him to leave at the end as she has enough self worth to be able to live without him.

The scene where Connell and Marianne are on Skype might have been my favorite. Connell said he hadn't been sleeping but he was exhausted, then Marianne stayed on call with him so he can sleep, and when he woke up she had put her laptop on the bed. That was such a nice, sweet scene. I also really enjoy all the shots of Marianne and Connell studying and reading, those really round them out as hardworking, intelligent characters. Finally, the scene where Marianne asks Connell to hit her when they're in bed, and Connell can't do it. That's such a sad, alarming moment for Marianne, but Connell is such a wholesome contrast to the other horrible guys Marianne had been subjected to. Sorry for being long-winded!

Connell was a complicated character. His ability to control Marianne without cruelty was very attractive to her. That scene where he refused to hit her reminded me of a joke we used to tell. What does a sadist say to the masochist when asked for a smack? No.

The scene that absolutely made the show for me was when Connell was looking at everyone in a party from a pool. Really looking at these people probably thinking who are all these people. I'll be honest, being Irish I was initially intrigued that a deep drama like this was being produced. I'm not in Ireland anymore, but it seemed to mark a milestone in an Irish-set drama. I was drawn by the themes and the mystery over where their relationship was going, and why Marianne's family was the way it was. I guessed there was abuse, and wondered if Marianne had killed her dad! Watched them two or three episodes at a time, but seven or eight episodes in I was balancing frustration at the caginess between them ("Just tell her you love her!!!!" kind of thing) with a waining desire for answers. By episode 11, I thought 'I'm not getting this, but I'll keep watching, because I'm 5/6 in. The last two episodes I found REALLY moving. Little exchanges between them, in the context of what had been before, suddenly had SO much power. We never find out the back-story to her family, but spending time with Connell's family became everyday and yet so life-transforming. The ending was appropriate - not together happy ever after, but a resolution to a lot of things, and a sense that, no matter what, things were going to be ok. Beautiful emotions.

I'm in my 60's and I was in tears at times, willing Marianne and Connell to 'find' each other. And agree with so many comments about the Connell therapy scene where he almost literally has to rip out from within himself all his grief and his trouble connecting with the world. It left me uttery drained, as he just emptied himself. Goodness. And Marianne's heart breaking belief she can't be loved. I found myslef in love with both characters. I noticed someone below people asking for recommendations about films/TV with similar themes. Try the lovely coming of age films 'The Year My Voice Broke' and 'Flirting'. both Australian films directed by John Duigan. The central character is the same in both movies, Danny Embling (played by the young Noah Taylor). The first one is about his first love when he lived in a small Aussie outback town, and then 'Flirting' when he's at Boarding school (the film also features a young Nicole Kidman and Thandie Newton). They are slightly lighter and with humour but both (and especially the first film) really do tap in the agonies of first love and are both very nuanced. You can see Flirting first without reference to TYMVB but it just helps to have done so with a couple of scenes in the secpnd film

I find myself catching up with Connell's feelings about five minutes afterwards. I find myself thinking 'why did he do that!' and then 'I guess, if I put myself in that situation...' and finally 'oh, I get it and worse I've done the same.' I like the fact that it's no immediately clear, as it's often not to ourselves where we are experiencing life.

I think one of the reasons Normal People has been so popular has been it has treated sensitive subjects.in a completely open & fresh way! Also it is taking us into the modern world. I found it very compelling & still read the book& watch my. favourite episodes over & over again ! Never. have done that in the past; or is it because I am over’80? Maybe the standard has improved - I don’t really think it is just that, I really think it is the superb acting. by.new comers! The excellent subject & superb acting by Daisy & Paul especially but not forgetting all the other actors who seemed so real - in particular Sarah Green, who played Connell’s Mum - she gave warmth to some difficult situations. Altogether a memorable production! I wish to say that Paul was incredible for someone so new to these long productions. I sometimes wonder if he was a known actor in disguise (I just don’t understand how he gives such amazing performances for one so new to us all).

What is it about Normal People? Like many others who watched the series, I feel bereft? The legend has gone down to the next generation. I gave the book to my oldest grandson who is studying for his Masters in computing security at Birmingham Uni along with his girlfriend who is with him for her PGCE! . They have both said that hopefully they will be able to watch the episodes on BBCiplayer when they can find time between lectures & assignments. So the fame of this exceptional story has travelled to the next generation - what a compliment to the story, but also to the actors! ! It will be difficult to adjust to seeing them in a different story., but that is the essence of acting! Margaret

The portrayal by the young actors was absolutely brilliant and perfect in every respect it was like reading the book all over again but in Technicolor. It bought it dramatically and realistically to life so to speak ! Loved it! Particularly liked the scenes in Sweden as know that area. Beautifully filmed in all locations,! Very well produced in all respects. A Triumph!

I would love a second novel and series possibly with an ending similar to Jayne Eyre but I’m not sure if it would be true to Sally Rooney’s novel and characters. Maybe it’s better for us to fill in the blanks ourselves as I’m sure they would meet again later in life. I’m sure it would be impossible for them not to. Iv actually still got the last 3 episodes to watch but there was a spoiler on here. After the first 3 episodes I thought to myself, at last something real, unassuming and beautiful to watch!!. All the best to you.

These two have the best chemistry and their performances are awesome! I loved the show...but can we all just acknowledge that the characters of Marianne and Connell are the WORST communicators, at times it was so frustrating I felt like shouting at the screen. I agree, but there are underlying reasons that lead to this inability to communicate. Connell loves Marianne, but she's rich and he isn't so it makes him doubt his worth. Marianne loves Connell, but the abuse in her life has made her doubt her worth. These perceived imbalances keeps them from being honest with each other. They fear rejection from these imbalances. I think when your heart is on the line, sometimes the fear of having your heart broken keeps us from revealing our true feelings.

The fact is there are lots of peopole who have communication issues. Autisic people are one group and are often misunderstood and bullied at school like Marianne, but they can be incredibly kind and intelligent and wonderful people to know... I know this because my daughter is. Some people just take longer to get to know and understand. Hopefully one thing this series and I actually think this virus will give us is more understanding and thought for others and that deep down we are all very similar

I wonder why the ending dialogue of season 1, episode 6 has Connell saying that Maryanne will probably want to see other people, but in her recalling of the moment, lying on her chair in episode 7, she remembers him saying they should see other people. There won't be a season 2, unless Sally Rooney writes a second book but she won't. Sometimes things are best left as they are, a piece of art. If Normal People became a show that got new series you'd eventually come to tire of it and it would sour the original series. The story is told, there doesn't need to be anymore. P.S. Sally Rooney has a second book out called Conversations with Friends which is also being adapted into a series.

I found the show to be a bit unrealistic in that I don't think two people that in love would have such poor communication and would be willing to let the other person go so many times. With that said, the two actors made it really watchable. I think I will actually rewatch it because it's so well done. I particularly enjoyed the portrayal of anxiety with Connell and the portrayal of being a loner/low self esteem in school like Daisy.

It was more about them growing as people and letting each other go as part of that. Marianne finally said no to Connell. After always saying she would do anything he wanted. She found her own happiness and didn’t want to leave that life behind. One of the only times that she ever actually did something for just her. With Connell he finally had the belief in himself that he was good enough and that he could achieve his dreams. They both helped each other grow as people and be the best versions of themselves. But I agree I was really rooting for them to be together. But I suppose it’s that while first love concept. Where it completely consumes you but in the end, for most cases, it’s just not meant to be. You have to move on with your life and let go. Where you promise forevers but ultimately life gets in the way.
