The physical intimacy does not ever seem gratuitous. Instead, it does treat the subject matter seriously, as Paul states, and you feel the emotional roller coaster these two characters go through as they try to find themselves whilst mishandling, misinterpreting, hurting each other, not speaking truthfully to each other, experiencing mental unwellness, all because they are learning ‘to love themselves before they can truly love another’. Beautifully acted. And it ends so rightfully. Not sentimental, but closer to reality …they may come back to each other out of their love for each other…or will find new partners because they have finally believed they can be loved. I’ve just watched it in June 2024 and returning to watch interviews …which are also so illuminating. I’ve read Paul say he has continued to have his own therapy …seems wise given the nature of the stories he’s filmed since this series in order to stay grounded. His emotional intelligence is what gets me when I have watched him in person and his acting. Credit to both of them and their supporting cast for such a moving series which I’ve recommended to my 22y old daughter to watch. It fits alongside One Day, series that portray deep and meaningful ‘coming of age’ themes. 🐑🐑🇳🇿🇳🇿NZ
