Never really cared for Paul's drumming till saw them live. For a straighforward drummer, Paul is VERY solid and makes that band sound very solid as well. Even for a guy with lower back problems he performs his job very well.

As Jack Owen said, "Cannibal with another drummer wouldn't sound like Cannibal at all." Which is 100% true. Paul has never been a flashy, or particularly technically gifted drunmer, but his style is perfect for Cannibal. His style helps Cannibal retain some of the grimy, primitive and primal feel which they lost somewhat when they ejected Chris Barnes and started playing more technical music. Paul is awesome in that respect!

Yes I have also read this in the Death Metal Law Hand Book. It is clearly stated in regulation 652-12; "All Death Metal drumming must be technical and accurate". That settles it. Cannibal Corpse is not Death Metal, sorry guys.

One thing that always stands out with Paul is his tempo spikes right before fills. But for some reason it just fits with the music. Kind of funny that way. Legendary drummer

Jonathan Portillo foreal this guy and the engineers who first recorded "death metal" had to figure out how record this back when death metal was born. Now a days u can trigger and over produce drums also cut n paste. He put in work back in the days and still does.

I love Cannibal Corpse and I think his style of playing fits the band and he probably owned his place in the metal scene. He is just not as good as people say he is. He is far from being a beast and this video perfectly shows it

he's not 20 age years old drummer...but he playin for 20 years more on drum...he is still my legendary favorite drummer... salute !!

Saw them live few months ago this year. Paul and Alex didnt miss a single note and played amazingly tight. The guy may not be the fastest or most techical but what many people said, Cannibal isn't Cannibal without him and he does a great job playing live.

Of course he's sloppy, but he's been playing for ages and has a shitty back. Who knows where metal drumming would be without him? He's the godfather of this entire style.

It should be noted that in his entire career he has never triggered his drum set. So this guy has been playing at full blast and with raw power every night for almost 30 years. He is the only drummer for cannibal corpse and it doesn't matter if he isn't the most technical drummer of all time. He has even said this in his interview with drumtalk, Paul isn't trying to fool anybody, he is what he his and does what he does and he does it perfectly. Also as a sidenote check out the song centuries of torment. The timing is that song is quite challenging and is an example of how good of a drummer he is.

I've always thought of Paul as the Ringo Starr of death metal. Rock solid timing, nothing too flashy, plays for the song and not himself. Legendary drummer and super nice guy!

While I agree with what you are saying overall there is no way you could say Paul has rock solid timing. He is known for always speeding up the blasts in the end. This video above is a prime example of it. Every blast he does he speeds up a little bit by the end. Don't get me wrong, Paul is a legendary drummer and I couldn't imagine anybody else with CC. But he does not have rock solid timing, not even close.

There's probably a million internet drummers who could play this song better technically, but he's good enough and was part of founding the death metal scene. Paul will have a legacy and is a part of metal history. 99,99 % of the internet kids that play double bass in 674 bpm won't.

Such a great drum composition. Tempo changes left and right, sudden tempo rushes or drags in fills, and with the riffs results in me wanting to rip the universe in half. Love it.

For all the bad comments being given about Paul, one thing is for sure, he's better than Lars.

+Ida Kongensøy a lot of that is probably due to his posture/technique. He's been hunched over and played his drums In the most unconventional way possible. Not that I'm some supreme master of technique but I have learned to not do what he does haha.

I challenge everyone who calls it "sloppy" to try to play even for the first minute professionally. This guy is a virtuous, whoever says otherwise is ignorant and envious with no musical sense.

Fucking hell over 2 decades and he still is so bloody good. Hats off to the longevity of this guy, it's a testament to his dedication. Those who say he sucks, think again. This guy is no ordinary drummer' he's one of the masters, the original guys. I put him right up there next to Roddy, Laureano, Sandoval etc.

Yes this guy sucks compared to good death core drummers not even close he's not clean boring simple beats basic rolls blasts are of kicks aren't very fast, any of rings of saturns drummers are better carnifex drummer, salt the wounds drummer thy art is mixers drummer I can go on and on look up any of those bands drum playthroughs. If your not a good drummer your opinion is invalid, I myself can play this with ease the bands I just listed not so much way way way fucking harder to play.

People with all the hate are obviously just jealous that any drummer that's been playing for a long time like Lars Ulrich and Paul Mazurkiewicz despite their off beats and slow drum tempos, those two drummers are good for one band that you do not want to compete with. In the other hand, there is no need to compensate for the bullshit hate and boring drama with all the instrumental comparison of who's a better drummer. Frankly if Lars Ulrich left Metallica they wouldn't be Metallica like Paul Mazurkiewicz leaving Cannibal Corpse therefore those bands would be completely different. All in all Paul may not be the best drummer in death metal history but I will say he is the only one for being the cannibal caboose. Man the comments like "oh he's the best drummer." He is very consistent" "oh he's the worst drummer." "his timing is off." Blah blah blah blah blah! Who cares! It is what it is. In terms of instrumental skills musicians are unique for certain bands weather if they've been professionally trained or self-taught, there is no need for such unnecessary boring hate towards any professional musicians playing music longer than you have ever born. So what if they are sloppy? They have earned their place in their own history, give them a break. Give it rest and quit wasting your breath over a bunch of stupid things that tend to be trifle. As a matter of fact we all can learn from those musicians despite some of the changes over the 20-30 years.

tbh the only "sloppy"part are the blast beats, which is understandable with his age and back problems, the rest is just fine. We love you Paul, you are a legend.

Number one no one should talk crap about his drumming he's an amazing drummer he may technically not be perfect but taking mine over 20 years of touring recording sessions sleeping uncomfortable Vans and tour buses performing shows day after day there's a lot to factor in he's an amazing member of a kick-ass band so shut up and enjoy the music most of the haters on here may be able to play a song but they couldn't do 20 years of touring and live performances

The song that made me a huge fan "Hammer Smashed Face", and it was because of Paul's drums, and my fav Corpse song "Stripped, Raped, and Strangled" 🤘🏻

Its interesting that as Cannibal evolved, they replaced guitarists and they replaced Barnes because they couldn't keep up with the more technical direction, but they kept Paul when he is clearly not the most technical drummer. Not trying to talk shit, I love CC. Now I can't really imagine them with anyone else

He is my idol. Self taught, he has his own tecnique, and it's PERFECT for cannibal...

I feel like the best musicians are the most unique. He's only really been in this band. The more I watch him, the better I get at metal drums. One of my favorite drummers. Almost a hardcore punk drummer, but more creative.

Do people not realize that these are the last two songs he's playing out of like an hour long set? When it comes to death metal, there's really no slow stuff that lets you catch a break. So of course hes gonna be sorta sloppy and off time in parts, he's probably tired as fuck and putting everything he has left into the last songs. If you watch videos of him recording in studio, he usually gets each song done after a few takes.

It looks as if he was playing in some comfy crocs and had a radiator in his back to keep it warm, just like in his own basement, hehe. And Alex Webster still rocking his windmill head up front. I've seen them headlining Wacken in 2003, imagine that, that's 15 years ago and they are still blasting audiences away. I have nothing but love and the deepest of respects for this band.

With this kind of music you dont need to be technical or flashy, paul has already cemented himself in death metal royalty.

Paul kicks ass. His drumming is a hugely important element in the Corpse sound. He's indispensable. As well, he seems friendly, intelligent and entirely likeable. The man has earned his status as a legendary metal warrior. All the best to Paul and his CC band mates.

Doing this for 20 years straight will slow you down. Everybody is different. Some drummers can keep it up, some others can't over time. But he's still going. Definitely one of the most influential drummers in Death Metal.

Please ease some on some of the negativity here. Keep in mind that Paul has been playing this extremely intricate, both mental and physically demanding type of Music for the past 20+ years now. Coming from a Musician's standpoint, I can only imagine what it might be like when your body can no longer operate/perform like that any longer.

Something that differs Paul from the whiners is that he plays in worlds biggest and best death metal act, whilst they don't....

One thing I love about this band is that they've kept Paul from the very beginning, while maintaining technical and punishing music. They could have given him the boot and hired some young gun who can blast @ 280 BPM. They haven't compromised in the least and continually raise the bar, musically, in their own right. Granted, I really only listen to Tombs and The Bleeding, CC continues to be one of my favorite metal bands, handsdown. Much respect!
